I am new to being a bunny owner. I adopted a little holland lop boy just yesterday! He is just a little over a year old and I’m pretty sure from what I have read that he is a little overweight. His previous owner was giving him two little bowls of pellets a day, and lots of orchard hay. I think I need to gradually lessen the amount of pellets and give him timothy hay instead? He is very active and has free run of our house. He dashes around a lot and does binkys all the time!  What do you guys think about his diet situation?

          Congrats on your new bunny!!

Check out the diet page https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO…fault.aspx

You said his previous owner gave him two small cupfuls (hard to know for sure how big ”small” was - how much do you think that was equaling cupwise?   Normally the recommended amount is 1/4 to 1/2 cup pellets per 6 lbs.  (and since Hollands really reach just about 4 pounds, you can figure it may be a bit less).

Both Orchard and Timothy are just fine, and you can start adding in greens too.  If he is not used to greens at all, then it’s best to just go slow, one by one.  There is a link to the list of greens/veggies on the diet page.

And thanks for the advice up there! I’m pretty sure he was getting closer to a cup or a little more a day of pellets so we will lessen those a little and try and get him to eat more hay gradually! Along with some veggies of course.

Man – he is cute! A little lop with palomino colouring almost. It’s hard to tell from pictures, but he doesn’t look to chubby. The lops are a bit more compact in body shape so can appear chubby. Less pellets & more hay + veg is a good step anyway. Hope we’ll see more of him – so cute!

Hey really doesn’t look chubby to me at all! I have a holland and they tend to be pretty stocky, so they look like they’re carrying more weight than they are. I’d take him to the vet and get their opinion before you start limiting his food too much. He is a cutie though! And I actually have friends with a little pug-sharpei named Chubs. Hehe.

I agree that he doesn’t look overweight. How much does he weigh?

Hey thanks for all the comments everyone! I’m glad you don’t think he’s overweight, I never thought he was fat, just maybe a little heavier than he should be. Anyways, I’ll still probably gradually try and get him to eat more hay/less pellets since that seems the healthiest all around. I also introduced him to some cilantro today and he seems to like it!
