My bunny is bleeding from her bottom.  I flipped her over and didn’t see any wounds.  She appears to be not bothered at all (she’s munching on her food right now).  She is an unspayed female (I was going to get her spayed within the next couple of weeks).  But I saw little things of red on the floor and picked her up to investigate.  I put her down after and there is blood all over my shirt! Like big spots!

It’s 11:30 at night and no vet is open and I have no money right now…. researched on the internet and found all kinds of conflicting non helpful stuff… Please help.  I read that she may be near giving birth?!  I’ve only had her for a couple weeks and before that she was all alone in a cage but I don’t know how long she was there or where she was before that.

        Please HELP!

I’m sorry I have no help for you. I hope someone comes on soon that can help. All I can say is take her to an emergency, But they don’t all have bunny savvy vets. I hope she is fine.

Thank you. I really hope someone does too. There is an e-vet but they are like almost an hour away. And I have NO money. I will figure out something though if she does need to go. I’m just worried about her. 🙁 She’s acting completely normal. So I don’t know what’s going on. But she is bleeding enough where I’m soaking the shirt I was wearing with peroxide and it bled through to my skin underneath. That’s what’s freaking me out. I know bunnies are good symptom and pain hiders but she’s acting completely normal for her… as far as I know.

Anyone out there who can help me… please HELP!

I have no idea what this could be, but I do know when a bun is bleeding its serious. I put the alert out so hopefully someone with more knowledge will show up soon. But if it were me id head to the vet NOW. Better to start over there now, then to wait till later when you see her changing for the worse and have it be to late. As you said they hide illness, so just because she is acting okay doesnt mean she might be alright. And i think I remember someone (maybe BB) saying that rabbits have some sort of special way that they dont bleed alot, it helps with injuries being prey. So that makes me think that her system isnt even stopping this bleeding, which makes me think this is even more serious. Sorry I cant be more help, but id head to the vet asap.

It doesn’t sound like an emergency unless there is a cut or wound OR she’s not eating, or pooping, and/or straining to pee, or any other behaviors that may indicate she is suffering – but blood in the urine can indicate a serious problem that you need to take to a vet as soon as you can.

Also, some urine pigment can look like blood, but it’s not actually blood. Blood usually look bright bright red, where pigment can be a rusty brown. Is there a streak of blood or does it all look like blood. Have you been noticing her straining to pee? Do you notice her going outside of her box more or dribbling urine?

If it is actual blood, it can be a number of different things and there is no way for us to know. Only a vet will be able to help in this case.

Some vets are open on weekends and I’ve had vets allow payments so it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

NOTE: If she continues to bleed – meaning it’s not just when she urinates, but she’s just bleeding constantly then yes, I too would consider this an emergency.

Hello Emily – I’m sorry to hear that your bunny hurt. It is very surprising to me that a bunny that is bleeding that badly is still acting normally and still eating. There is really no home remedy to help a bunny that is bleeding other than getting them to the vet, which is what I would do ASAP if it were my bunny. Can you see any blood accumulating underneath her? Can you tell where it is coming from? I think that regardless of the cause of the situation, if you are seeing that much blood you definitely do need to go to the emergency vet. Are you sure it is blood and not possibly red urine? Either way it is an emergency, but I was wondering if you could tell if that is what it was.

I’ve got her penned in the kitchen. And I can see little red marks all over the kitchen floor. Like, and I rub the spot and it won’t come up easy so I don’t think it is urine. I am really worried about her. 🙁 What’s killing me is she is still super active… so nothing is pooling underneath her. Like right now she’s biting and pushing at the pen trying to get out… like she normally does. And she did escape a minute ago and was just hopping all over the place… I don’t know if the bleeding has stopped or if it’s just slowing down or if I just didn’t see it, but I didn’t see any blood on the carpet…

I don’t know… I’ll definitely be taking her to the vet though.

Well the fact it’s still coming out – something is up. Could it possibly be coming from a torn out nail or some place else?

I’m just seeing this now. How is she this morning? I don’t know where you’re located but there may be a time zone difference.
Has the bleeding stopped? How is she acting?

I would definitely call the vet to get an appointment immediately this morning. Ask if she can bill you or take a credit card to delay payment, but go.

The bleeding had stopped before I went to bed. I checked on her the next morning and she seemed completely fine. My boyfriend thinks she just got hurt by something. But when I flipped her over I hadn’t seen anything to make me think that. And I also did check her nails. I don’t know! I feel like a bad bunny mom because I didn’t take her to the vet, but she’s acting COMPLETELY normal. I had her out last night and she wasn’t bleeding at all and she was hopping around and digging and playing… she seems completely fine.

Thanks to all of you for your support and concern… this is truly an awesome forum! Do you guys still think I should take her to the vet? Considering I have like $3 and she seems to be completely fine?

If she’s eating and playing fine, I guess she’ll be alright. I’m glad she’s fine I was worried.

When was the last time she’s been for a check-up? Unspayed females do have a very high risk of reproductive cancer, so I would take her in for a check-up, altho it doesn’t have to be on an emergency basis… Depending on what the vet finds it may be important for her to be spayed right away. You said you would be doing that soon anyways, right? I’m glad she’s doing better now and she’s acting normally, but I wouldn’t be satisfied with that, I would need to know what had happened.

You had said that she was going in to be speutered soon?  When?  Have you scheduled that appt yet?  Did you do the pre-check b/f the speuter?  I would really want to know where the blood was coming from…..anus?  vagina?  Reproductive cancer could cause bloody discharge from the vagina.  I know that dogs & cats can get pyometra….I’m not sure about rabbits?  Pyometra is basically an infection in the uterine horns or uterus.  It can cause bloody or pus discharge from the vaginal area.  This is a life threatening condition and if not tx’d immediately the infection can burst internally…..I don’t want to scare you, but chances are you need a check up b/f the surgery anyway, I’d take her in.

Now would be a good time to start making more long term plans. You will always need a bit of $ put aside for emergencies, so that’s something you can start to do. If you feel you need the help, sign up for Pet Insurance (VPI is one good company) for $12/month which will not cover the spay, but will help if anything happens. You need to do that before she has a preexisting condition.

may as well see the vet sooner to get ready for the spay rather than later. Tell her what happened, get a preliminary exam, and make your appointment. You’ll be glad to get it over with.
