I took Cotton to the vet in feb about his lip.   His bottom lip.  I check it from time to time.  I thought it was getting way better.  Well it isn’t.  I notice he has a hard time picking up his hay to eat.  And it has been 4 months since he last saw the vet about it. Should have been healed by now. Shouldn’t it?

He is going to the vet in 2 weeks to see about it.   I am thinking could be his molars for his front teeth look good.  The vet said I could put regular neosporin on it but I haven’t cuz he licks it off.   He also fights like mad.  I put some on today anyways. Since it isnt’ getting any better.  Oh and it goes across his whole bottom lip. The left side is much better than the right side tho.

This is a preexisting condition so unless it is his teeth the ins. may not pay for it.  I could wait til august but that is 6 weeks away.  I dont’ want him to have to wait 6 more weeks. Besides if it is hip lip and not his teeth I can take care of that.  Well even if it is his teeth I can still take care of it.  I am sure the ins. will pay some of that too.

        I hate this. Heal already.

Is it a sore or a scab?  Do his lips ever remain wet after drinking or eating?  Is his hair long there?  can you take some pics so we can see what it looks like? (I know it might be hard to get a pic of something so small). Have you called to vet since Feb to find out what they recommend?

I would have thought it would have healed by now- I wonder if there is an underlying cause for an infection or irritation.  I can see why you are hesitant to put Neosporin on it- it is in the perfect place to be immediately licked off and eaten- if you do apply any put a very light film on and try to give a treat that he loves like raisins or something to get Cotton to not lick it for as long as possible- maybe cut up some raisins into little pieces and have him beg and work for the little pieces to distract him.

You should find out if your vet accepts Care Credit and apply for that if they do- it is a credit card for medical expenses only (some vets, doctors, dentists, etc accept Care Credit- http://www.carecredit.com&#160  Even if treatment is covered by insurance unless you are able to make special arrangements with your vet clinic you are still responsible for the full amount of the vet bill- and then after you submit your claim- you are mailed a check from VPI for what is covered.

Oh good Care Credit never heard of it.   I am going to have to try that out.   It looks moist on his bottom lip.  A  small dry scab is on the right  side.   Now I don’t think it is his teeth cuz I gave him mountain hay and he is eating it like crazy.

I will take him in again anyways.  In the meantime I will put neosporin.  The left side of his lip gets a big scab cuz his hair grows there. It moves as the hair grows.

My mind was going crazy with worry thoughts til I saw him eating hay.   I think I can get a pic of it tomorrow in good light.

He does lick his face a lot after he drinks water. So much so that even top top of his nose gets wet.  It doesn’t look infected at all.  In Feb the vet did run test it isn’t infected or abcessed just inflamed.  It looked better the 2nd time I put Neosporin on today.

I will continue to worry and put Neosporin on it.  His hair under his chin is dry til he drinks water.

You know something…. Maybe I should switch him to a water bottle.  I will look for it tomorrow.  No tonite.  I wonder if that could be the problem.  Hmmm just might be.  I was thinking it was a hard spot to heal up cuz it gets wet there and brushed with hay when he eats it.

I took his willow tunnel away for now and he is happy with his box and big willow cube.  He wants attention now .  Well I better go see what I can find as far as a water bottle goes.

            Thanks for your ideas.

I dont’ like waterbottles.  They leak all mine leak.  However I got it set up so it won’t leak hardly and put a dish under it to catch it if it does.

Cotton doesn’t seem to be happy about this new situation.   I am going to buy a waterbottle from the pet store nearby if it leaks I dont’ have to go far to keep exchanging them til I get one that works right.

He has 2 scabs a tiny one and the bigger one that moves with the hair growth.  It does look better than it did in Feb.  But not that much. I hope this works.

He hasn’t lost any weight so I doubt now that it is tooth related.

Yeah I would switch him to a water bottle. Don’t change anything else for a few days, just see if it helps at all.

Licking shouldn’t make a difference… they don’t have actual ‘lips’ like we do, with extra sensitive skin that gets chapped from licking.

It might be silly, but he could have an allergy. Like to the type of hay or to his pellets or to a vegetable or type of wood. It could just effect his lip instead of his whole system. Bunnies can get allergies… see the highlighted sections of
                http://books.google.com/books?id=PYajqU-WOOAC&pg=PA128&lpg=PA128&dq=allergies+in+rabbits&source=bl&ots=P9hUfg-FsQ&sig=RMR1uj5RXM6ZGPX6SUAKWbWy_hQ&hl=en&ei=CsgxSv6vE92wtgeS67yhCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=10

I think you should ask your vet for a topical antihistamine to try on his lower lip.  Or you could use a drinkable one but I feel like that would help more for sneezes and such (http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?t=9975)

When did you first notice it? Think back to that point, then two weeks or a month earlier and see if anything changed at that time.

Did they do any tests on his lip last time to determine if the lesion was bacterial, viral or fungal?

I’m not certain why changing him to a water bottle is going to make any difference so I would not do that myself.

Can you call the vet and speak with him to see if they can do something without going in for an appointment – not sure if they will since it’s been so long but if you suspect dental problems then a phone call isn’t going to resolve that. At least if you speak with the vet and explain your situation the vet can see how he/she can help you.

Is he eating his pellets and vegetables?

BT, is this the same place where Cotton’s lip was bitten about a month ago or so?
Is the wound oozing anything at all? Does he seem to be in any pain?
The only thing that I can think of that could be irritating it so that it wouldn’t close up would be the roughness of the hay he eats, but other than that I can’t believe it’s taken so long to heal up. Does he rub his face on anything (would it be aggravated by chinning things for instance?) It is possible to overdo the Neosporin (keeping the area too wet would slow healing) but we also don’t want him getting an infection either.
Poor little guy. I wish I could be of more help.

Well… This morning I see he hadn’t eaten all his pellets.  He seems to have forgotten how to use a waterbottle.  I put Neosporin this morning.

I gave him a treat he took those. Then he proceeded to clean his  chin.   The vet did say in Feb to put Neosporin it should be ok.   However since he hasn’t eaten his pellets this morning either I dont’ think it is helping and making his situation worse.  So no more of that.

I only used it for 3 days now.  I skipped putting it on him last nite Just put in the morning.

Thinking back I dont’ think Ruby bit him on his lip after all.  This started when Hubby won something at the club house.  He picked a food dish.  It has low sides and I was using that for Cottons water bowl.  The previous waterbowl had real high sides.  Last nite I was drying the dish and I dropped it and it broke.  Just desserts I suppose.

I gave him water this morning in a high sided dish.  His chin felt wet afterwards too. I don’t know what to do.

I checked his teeth this morning and his front teeth seem to have an overbite.  Could be the way I was holding him.  I hate waiting for his appmnt. I am getting so anxious.  I do know one thing.  NO more Neosporin.  I think it has affected his appetite.  I am thinking the rough hay may not be helping his lip either.  Seems like he ate a little bit of hay last nite.

We did get home late last nite so he got his pellets late.  Made sure he had plenty of hay to hold him over.  As of now he hasn’t touched his pellets. He did eat some of them last nite.  I dont’ know what to do I am so  worried for him.  Just hang in there til 7/1.  Thats his appmnt date. I expect his appetite to resume soon since I stopped the Neosporin.

I guess treats to keep something in his stomache.  Oh what to do what to do. I hope he remembers how to drink from a bottle again soon.

OH the vet is in today let me go call her.

Well I called vets office.  Cottons regular doc isn’t in til tuesday.   The desk said to put him on a metal dish in case of allergy and to continue the neosporin .     Trying peroxide is ok to do too.

When he went in feb his doc ran cultures and tests on it and was no bacteria or  infections or abcesses.

The water dish I was trying a diff height one cuz I thought the higher sided one would keep from getting water on his chin.  Thats why I switched him to a bottle.  It defeats the purpose tho if he wont’ drink from it.

Well  we will just see what happens. And take him in  and also call next week too.  You know Cotton hasn’t seemed troubled by it that I can tell.

If it is a hay allergy I wonder which hay.  OH geeesh.  Process of elimination.  Will just see what vet says.  In the meantime the waiting is a pain.

I put his very original water dish back in he drank then ate.  So that was the problem after all.  Guess I will have to see how things go with him.

He fights so hard when I go to put med on his lip.  We mange tho he and I.

Since his next appt. is in two weeks, is there any reason why you can’t just reschedule it sooner? It may help to cancel that one and bring him in this coming Tuesday or a few days later.

Is his original water dish metal? If you are told by the vet to switch to a bottle, which doesn’t sound like it will help but I can’t tell at this point, then I can link you to a dripless water bottle I tried and it seems to work well. Though Sammy has a dish too, so she ignores the bottle.

He won’t drink from a bottle.  He ate after  I put a taller water dish in and he drank.  He is eating  normal now.  I checked his lip it actually looks better.   I can’t pay the vet right now.  They wont see him.

I really am not so sure if Ruby bit him or not.  It showed up like a month later. It is still possible she bit him tho. When the water bowls switched.

Oh!! Well no wonder you are worried. (I just came over from your other post)   I’m so sorry for all the worry that you have had to go through.  HUGS!   I am glad though that as of today, he is eating normally now and drinking and that his lip looks better.

So though he does look better now and may not need vet care, I just wanted to clarify – so your vet won’t see you because you can’t pay? They won’t work out payment plans or anything?  If not, check out those resources from the other thread and this article:  Great HSUS tips on how to pay for vet bills when you are having financial troublel

Some of the resources that help people with vet care require you to fill out an application and stuff, and so it would be good to do it before there is an emergency.  It sounds like something that may be really beneficial for you.  I hope it works out!

Well, I’m sending out healthy healing vibes to your bunnies, and happy and calm vibes for you.

I can pay in July.  You know those once a month checks are gone by the middle of the month yuck.

This morning he ate good and his lip looks better yet.  Oh he fights like mad though. We manage to get the med on his lip anyhow.   This morning I put peroxide then neosporin.

I kept him busy with treats so he wouldn’t clean it off right away.  It seems to be doing him some good even though he cleans it off.  Maybe he doesnt’ get it all off after all. I am not so worried about him now.  He will be ok.

I find it so hard to save $.  It is hard with the little hubby and I get.  Hubby won’t loan me the $ either.  He is funny about spending $ on animals.

I am so glad I put in our contract he has no say and can’t grype about me spending $ on them.  I just realized I do  have some saved but it is very little. I have asked the vet b4 to see him and I pay on the first but they won’t do it.  I have made payments b4 when I paid half up front you would think that counts for something. Guess not.    I feel better about his lip today and that he will be ok.

Maybe she will give him something for his lip when he goes in that is unless it heals b4 then.

Thank  you for the links BB.   I checked under disabled pet owners and there is nothing in Florida nor is there anything under any other category.  But I can try a neighboring state anyways and see.   Even though I have pet ins.  I may still need help someday.

                                        BT,

I tried searching a different way and came across this list, which looks like it’s from the same site BB linked, but I didn’t turn this list up until later. Anyway, aren’t you closer to Orlando than anywhere else? Maybe you could call one of these places and see if they know of a vet or org. even closer to you.
