August has been neutered for 2 and a half months now and the bonding is going great! BUT, His urine is STILL PUTRID and he throws poop everywhere! He lines the peremiter of his cage… As for the bonding, He is humping Buster quite a bit… They get along great but he still likes to hump…. Buster is the model bunny… No Poop, no Smell, no humping… Just LOVES to play! and Loves August!

I don’t know what to do! It’s driving us crazy!

What does his daily diet consist of? I know some veggies can make urine more stinky (however, I can never seem to remember exactly which ones…) The pooping might still be territorial marking, some buns will always mark their area, even years post-neuter. Is he using a litterbox in addition to the marking? Humping between a pair is typically their way of working out their dominance issues, or it could be a sign of excitement or insecurity. As long as they are not humping facing the “wrong” direction (August humping Buster’s head) and there is no aggression between them, there is no real danger in the humping. My pair will hump each other several times thru out the day, and they’ve been bonded for a year. I think it’s just them expressing their love of the other.

Are they living together full-time or you’re still doing bonding sessions? Another member mentioned that her not-quite-bonded pair would hump when they were first brought together for a session, it was almost like their way of saying “hi!”

I think as long as the humping doesn’t bother Buster then you should not worry about that. If Buster is not happy with the humping he will try to get away or let August know. It sounds like August too is still going through puberty and some rabbits really are just better at the litter box than others.

Well, as far as the Humping is concerned, Buster lays there for a second and kinda takes it but then when he’s had enough he just runs away… They are both so cute because they just sniff each other and lick each other once in a while… They will lay next to each other… But they don’t let each other get very far apart… they will run and follow each other all over the room… They will both Flop right in the middle of the living room after they have worn themselves out playing… They just play and play!

August is still using his litterbox quite well, even though he is marking his condo… Last week I let them out to play/bond and August pee’d in the corner of the living room… About a week after his neuter I went to clean his cage and there was what I think was urine all around the bottom bar of his cage… I didn’t see it until I moved the cage… It’s like it would have just trailed around the bottom about 3/4 of the way around… There was no puddle just around the bottom… It was really weird! It’s never happened again… He uses his litterbox regularly…

His diet has never changed since i’ve had him… He has Hay, two handful of pellets everyday, Green leaf lettuce, Kale, Cilantro, Carrot and romaine… He’s never been sick and eats and poops well… He’s always been a stinky Bunny… I thought it would go away after his neuter, That’s why I was asking the question… I can handle the poop but not that smell… My wife is begging me to re-home him and keep only buster because he is SUCH a GREAT Bunny! Although his molting CONTINUES!!!! UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Makes me wonder if perhaps Buster has some kind of urinary infection since you his urine smells so bad.

It sounds to me like August was peeing over the side of the litterbox – sometimes they stick their hind end up and instead of peeing in the box they miss the box. If that is the case then perhaps a high sided box might help.

August is the one with the smelly Urine… He doesn’t act sick though… What would be other signs? He does have a high sided box… The urine would have traveled ALL the way around his cage and then stopped abruptly… It was very weird!

When my rabbits have urinary tract infections I can usually tell because they don’t use their litter boxes – I’ll see wet spots everywhere. Mine will usually continue eating and drinking they just cannot control their bladders. Usually their urine smells stronger too I guess from the bacteria and inflammation. I’m sure they are uncomfortable but not uncomfortable enough to eat (certainly if it continued that could be the case that they stop eating).

Sometimes you might see them putting their tail up as well straining to urinate and maybe they will urinate and maybe they won’t but you can see them straining.

Someone last year had a good suggestion for an overly-humpy bunny, they put a box or something just big enough for one in the pen so the humpee could scoot in and get away from the humper.

My senior couple like to do it in front of the younger rabbits and before you know it, they’re ALL humping! competitive bunch.

Beka – I think it’s Basil that makes urine extra smelly.

UTI’s can definitely affect the smell of urine too, so it would be a good idea to have him checked out. Do you notice any of the symptoms that Sarita described?

Thank you BB! I always forget what specifically it is ;o) You would think I’d take a moment to write it down, but I’m sure I’ll forget by tomorrow! lol…
