Stormy is going through a big shed. He looks pretty funny because he sheds and grows back in chunks. I thought this was why he looks so strange lately. But then last night, it sort of hit me all at once: He is changing colour. He’s a grey and beige Harlequin and his beige is shedding out and growing back a whitish colour. His sides are white and grey now and his back is beige and grey.

I suspect he will keep lightening as he gets older. I have baby pics of him and he was so much darker when he was younger. His grey was really dark and his beige too,  but he’s adorable no matter what colour he is I’ll try to remember to take and post some before/after pics.

Anyone else experience a colour change as their bun ages?

How wonderful! Harlequins are not only multi-colored, they come in a one-bunny variety pack! LOL

Yes, Spockie definitely changed color as he aged, though not as dramatically as Stormy. The opposite though – he got darker. His were very light to medium gray marks on white, and as he got older they came in darker and more plentiful. One of my family came to visit and said they didn’t remember him being black in his spots. He hadn’t been.

From your pix I didn’t realize that Stormy was a classic Harlequin. I can’t wait to see the new pix.

P.S. Please don’t change your siggy. Those 3 wearing “hoodies” may be my favorite pix on BB.

Yes, my first rabbit Bunbun was a gorgeous sable colored rabbit. He was younger when I got him and his points were darker then eventually he got darker all over – he was such a beautiful color – loved that rabbit, miss him alot.

Do a lot of rabbits get lighter as they get older?
I remember seeing Bunnie when she was a little kit and she was much darker and now she is a light tan. My younger rabbit is much darker but that just could be his markings. I found it interesting that she got so much lighter and I guess I wasn’t expecting that. Sir Thumps a lot -who strangly enough rarely thumps, just humps. Perahps it’s just a little ironic- he has a beautiful dark coat with sections of black and dark brown and his face is mostly black. A beautiful little rabbit he is. I will post pictures later today.

Can’t wait to see pictures Sir Thumspey!

I know sometimes as well that the length of daylight has something to do with fur changing colors in some rabbits.

My bunny Cotton has gotten darker as she has gotten older- but she is a “shaded” rabbit- and that is typical for animals with color points to get darker as they age.  It was noticeable when she was really young- we would call it “ring around the bun” as you could see the line all around her body of the lighter fur shedding out to darker fur.

I know that in dogs- the sun can bleach their hair coats- so if a rabbit was housed outside and in the sun a lot I would assume that could also happen- though most rabbit hutches I assume would have a roof and plenty of shade.
