CHATSWORTH, Ont. – Police in Grey County are looking for anyone who may suddenly have 77 new rabbits.

Provincial police say someone went into a barn in the Georgian Bluffs area this weekend and stole 77 show rabbits, along with four bags of feed and nine transport cages.

The incident is very similar to two others that police were investigating from January. In those cases someone went into the same barn and took 13 show rabbits, mostly of the California breed, in two thefts over 10 days.

In all of the incidents there was no sign of forced entry into the barn and no motive is known.
The total value of the rabbits in all of the thefts is estimated at about $1,500.

Insurance? I don’t know! If it’s a ‘rescue’ where will they put them all? Gotta be more than one person surely.

I’d be more willing to bet on someone who wants to sell them as feeders or use them as bait for fight dogs.

I”d go with the bait for dogfights idea. Feeders would have to have a huge number of large snakes.

wow… dogfights… never even crossed my mind that it’d be a reason to steal bunnies. disgusting. that makes sense tho. why on earth would anyone else want that amount of bunnies. it also boggled my mind that some one would have that number of ‘show rabbits’.

Well the number of ‘show’ rabbits is high because they continually breed them until they get the perfect one. However, the breeds are pure during this time so they are considered ‘show’ quality – even if they are never shown.

Another option is also for scientific experiments or even cheap food for people – usually of ethnic descent. There are just too many different ways to use a rabbit. It is quite sad.

My first thought was animal activist but I don’t think they would steal show rabbits. Meat rabbits for sure. But who would have 77 rabbits for show???

I sure hope they find the culprits before it’s too late.

I hate people who breed and show animals. It’s fine to show off your beautiful dog or rabbit but it sets an incredibly high standard of perfection that people continually try to achieve by constant breeding and I’m against it because you cannot show an animal that’s been spayed or neutered.

quite sad is right. i thought possibly they were stolen by activists too. i figure that that many show rabbits are likely not receiving a very high standard of care. i hope they catch whoever’s responsible for the theft too. you just *know* that something terrible is going down.

Wow 77. Poor buds. If they were for say… meat or dog bait i don’t see why the theives took that many..(we all know how rabbits can multiply fast..)Probably not too smart of them to take 77 if all they would really need is around 4-8 to make a profit off breeding..besides it wouldn’t raise suspicians if they only took a handful but 77… that would be tricky to hide

Just seems so random to me. Hope they figure this out.

I just had to put in my 2 cents… It’s not so much that people want to show off their animals, but show quality animals are of the utmost standard.  They’re the healthiest, the best in conformation, and the least inbred.  Breeders who also show their animals ensure that whoever purchases, whether to be a family pet or show prospect, is buying an animal that has been bred for the best accumulative qualities.  I wouldn’t dream of breeding any animal if it weren’t show quality.

With that said, it is still a tragety that these animals were taken.  There is no way of finding out why unless they find the people resposible.  I only hope that it wasn’t for dogfighting…  There’s no worse way to make an animal suffer (the bunny or the dog).  It’s just so sad that people resort to this kind of thing…
