Sooo, I caved and picked up a PediPaws today, and I know we had a whole thread full of testimonials on how wonderful it was to use, etc.

But it’s 1 AM here and I’m too tired to search it. >.< Is anyone here still using theirs and if so, any tips on how to introduce my bunnies to it?

        Many thankies in advance!

I just bought Pedi-mate from an El Cheapo store for $10.  It has a batt operated drill and 18 bits.  I’ve tried it on Jersey sucessfully using the arbor barrel bit that’s like a smaller version of the pedi paws one.  It’s actually meant for humans.

When I got Sammy my Dad ran out and bought her Pedi Paws as a gift, but I’ve been too afraid to try it until she got more comfortable with me.

But it does say to spend several days where you just turn it on, let them hear the noise next to them, and give them a treat. Turn it off and put it away. Then repeat the next day. They get used to the noise and associate it with a treat. After that you start to work on their nails.

I’ve been super scared to do Freya’s nails because I don’t want to hurt her. I kept looking at the pedipaws and thinking I should maybe get one. But I kept talking myself out of it. I mean, to start with it’s probably loud right? Then I was thinking about how it’s one of those stupid “as seen on tv” things, which means it can’t possibly be half as cool as they say. So, I’m proven wrong on both points. I guess it’s time to go shopping!

The Pedi-mate box actually had “Similar to As seen on TV” highlighted on it! LOL! It’s pretty crappy asides from the sanding barrel for nails.

Adalaide, I would just start out picking Freya up and handling her feet first – just to get her used to it. Then put her down and give her a treat or lots of head pets. With the young ones, there nails are softer so you can actually just do regular tip trims with normal clippers or cat/kitten clippers that look like small scissors. The pedi-paws might be too much for rally young buns.

lolz…Jerz, read that sentence again…it came out sounding like you meant for Adalaide to pick Freya up BY her feet…so I thought I’d just post that of course, we NEVER pick bunnies up by their feet! ^_^

I also try to get my bunnies used to me touching their feet, but since that is one of their main ways to get away if they feel the need, I can imagine it is not very comfortable for them. However if I had to ‘treat’ the bunnies each time I wanted to get them used to the Pedipaws, I fear I won’t be able to find their feet under the mass of bunny body that will ensue!

LOL! Good point! I don’t actually recommend picking ’em up by the feet!

I prefer to pick them up by taxi….

While I have the PediPaws (still in my closet) I learned a great tip from a Rabbit Rescue DVD for trimming nails with clippers.

I’ve been wanting to share it. I had decided not to try the PediPaws while Sammy was still young, as jersey/MM mentioned, since her feet are still smaller and nails softer.

It’s called “Press, Press, Clip.” What you do is get her into position, like in a burrito, put the clipper on the toe nail, but BEFORE you actually cut, squeeze the clipper to the nail then stop and open them again. You do this twice, saying Press, Press. The third time on that same spot, you snip.

The reason is, if you have gone too low and touched the quick, when you press the bunny will immediately yank its paw away. The bunny will stop you from cutting and making her bleed.  If you are safely in front of the quick, the bunny won’t flinch, and you are good to go. Once in position, a bunny does not automatically pull away unless she feels she will be hurt. So together you keep from giving a painful trim. I tried it on the ever-slippery, skittish Samantha, and it worked!!!
