Our foster bun will be 4 months in June.  We’ve been feeding her alfalfa based pellets, but we were feeding her 1/8 of a cup….I thought I read it somewhere; I don’t know.  But then I go on the diet section and clicked on Under a Year link for the diet and it said unlimited pellets.  That’s for alfalfa right?  It just had pellets so I wanted to be certain.  I feel so bad now that I wasn’t giving her enough!  Actually I thought I was giving her too much before but I guess now I’ll give her all the pellets she wants.  Just want to make sure I read that all correct and am feeding her right.

I also give her a little bowl of veggies in the afternoon and night.  And she’s been getting unlimited timothy hay.

She’ll be fine. If you read the House Rabbit Society guidelines – it does not specify alfalfa pellets, only pellets – so high quality timothy pellets are fine as well. You might just want to up her pellets since you have her already on this diet – maybe do 1/8 in the morning and 1/8 at night – remember these are only recommended guidelines so don’t worry if you are doing something else – as long as she is healthy and does not appear to be hungry – don’t worry.

Thanks Sarita! I know the woman at the shelter said to give her alfalfa pellets until 7 months and I don’t want to upset her and change her diet; plus she’ll be going back to her in a few weeks to get spayed and staying with her until she’s healed.

I have a 13 week old baby bun and instead of giving him unlimited pellets all at once, I feed him twice a day, but give him pretty much as much as he can eat. So he gets 1/4 cup in the morning and it’s usually all gone when I get home from work, so I give him another 1/4 cup. If it’s almost all gone when I’m ready for bed, I give him a little bit more (not a full 1/4 cup). Now that he’s started on veggies he doesn’t seem to eat quite as many pellets, so he doesn’t really need the extra bit at night. Doing it this way allows me to keep track of how much he’s eating and whether or not he’s eating, which I like. Considering how much Otto eats, 1/8 cup does sound like too little for Parsnip; I’d just go with the HRS guidelines and give her as much as she can eat for now.

ETA: I feed Oxbox 15/23, which is alfalfa. For hay I give alfalfa sometimes and timothy others so that he doesn’t get stuck on eating just alfalfa.

Don’t quote me on this, but I read from a website, that you’re supposed feed bunnies 1/8 – 1/4 cup of pellets a day. I heard that if you continuously feed her unlimited Alfalfa Pellets, she could gain extra weight. And yep, you’re suppose to feed her unlimited Timothy Hay.
