Ok, so I have probably said so before, but I live in my in-laws house, with Freya and a husband of course. We have the basement and only have to share a kitchen upstairs. Since we’re in the basement we have the windows that are huge, with the whole 4 foot deep window box thing going on. On top of that there’s a grate to keep anything from getting in and the walls are aluminum something. The window sills on the inside are about a foot deep and outside it’s probably a 4×2 foot little area with small stones, no plants. Since Freya is a climber I’m wondering if you guys think it might be ok to build her a ramp to get up to the window sill and get out and play a little on nice days. There’s no possible way she could get out since she can’t jump that high and even if she could there’s that grate. Yes… I realize this may one day involve crawling out there to chase an angry teen to enforce bed time, but I’m prepared for that. I just want her to be able to get fresh air without the risk of escape, and my father-in-law treats his yard with something so I can’t let her play in the grass anyway.

Up to the window sill might be okay, but I cannot vision what this looks like – outside to play unattended no, that is a bad idea.

Would she be able to run back inside whenever she wanted? Would you put some grids or something on top of the windowgardenthing so nothing else can jump in?

My biggest fear about bunnies outside is hawks. I was nursing a baby bird and he had just learned to fly and he was staying in a tree and flying down when I went out to feed him. He was sitting on the deck railing and I was holding up his eyedropper when a hawk swooped down right in front of me, feathers brushing my face, and grabbed my poor baby bird right from under my nose! I threw my shoe at him and the hawk dropped him and the little birdy started to fly away, but the hawk caught him again. It was extraordinarily traumatic. I almost went out and bought a bb gun to go hunting in my backyard.

Hawks are a huge problem but there are also raccoons and other predators. Also (not knowing the setup obviously) there might be other dangers out there that may not come to your mind. I just don’t think that going outside unsupervised is ever a good idea for a rabbit.

sibley, that’s a fancy avatar pic you chose!

Adalaide, can you take a photo of this window area? Sometimes, those spots that appear real sheltered and safe are already home to some critter… (weasel, large spiders, etc..) I used to think the area underneath my raised front porch would make a fabulous rabbit hang-out if I fenced around the posts, but my boyfriend suggested not to use it because of the possibility of bugs and wildlife. Maybe you could set Freya up in an enclosure that has a bottom so she couldn’t eat anything in your yard, it wouldn’t have to be large since she gets lots of exercise with you indoors already, it would be just to get the fresh air.

Also isn’t Freya a baby and being that she is pretty small she can get even smaller and fit through fences and stuff and get out.

Petzy… I don’t have a bunny to put in my avatar picture yet =( So I thought a shadow bunny would be most appropriate.

If you make Freya an outdoor play area you should refer to it as Asgard, where the goddess Freya took slain soldiers in Norse mythology.

OMG Sibley, you know where her name came from! I love you.

Anyway, the little place outside the window is like I said about 4×2 feet and it’s about 4 feet to the top of it, straight up with a grate on top, she couldn’t fit through, maybe a tiny bird could if it like… fell outta the sky, but nothing else. I’d only open the window for her on nice days and only while I’m home with her. I’ll try to get some sort of camera today to get a picture with. Just imagine your living room picture window with a 4 foot high aluminum enclosure all the way around it, only she’d be underground, sort of, since we’re in the basement.

Ok then, things you didn’t know about Freya. When the Catholic church was bringing christianity north to Scandanavia they learned of Freya. She also is the goddess of fertility and rebirth and was represented often by eggs and rabbits. There was always a spring celebration in her honor which the church used to help incorperate the two religions, adopting many of the traditions as what we now celebrate for Easter. This is why I felt that Freya was an appropriate bunny name.

I think I get the set up… So the covering grate is actually level with the ground outside? Just to be extra cautious, maybe put some extra fine mesh over the grate aswell. May stop any crawlies getting thru – or snakes! It might be unpopular to say – but I think she’d love something like that. My main concern would be her age… Can you get into the space and thoroughly check it out?

                            You mentioned in another thread:

Yes, I live with my in-laws in the basement

I had to laugh as it reads like you have your in-laws in a basement haha! Sure there’s many couples out there who’d like to put theirs in a basement!

Haha, oh how I’d love to have my in-laws in the basement and have the whole upstairs. I already made sure I can get out there before I even thought seriously about letting her out. It’s wouldn’t be my favorite thing in the world, but I can get out there with her to get her if I need to. Yeah, the grate is even with the ground outside.

OMG snakes!!! I hate snakes, just thinking about them makes me pick my feet up off the floor and gives me goosebumps. Off to the home improvement store for mesh!

Well I hope you find some. I don’t want to be responsible if you can’t sleep tonight!

I went google imaging…  Is this sort of what you have?

You could grow herbs for her there!

Another consideration is whether the windows are wood frames and painted.  She could chew on these.

It’s like the second one, but with the grate over it. There are stones instead of dirt so no growing things in there without a ton of effort… maybe I could make her some grass? The window frames are aluminum, I certainly hope she can’t eat that although it wouldn’t surprise me if she tried. Now that you said plants I’m thinking of doing that in pots in the other two windows I don’t want her up on.

Wow I didn’t know you could get basement window thingies with planters like that. So much nicer!
