I picked up a bag of Yesterday’s News the last time I was in the store just for giggles. (It’s not often in stock at my store, sadly.) I was prepared (in trying it) for litterboxes to be tipped and contents scattered from here to kingdom come.

Both this litter and Good Mews are recycled paper products. Both claim to be 99.5 % dust free. Well the YN must be better at controlling that .5% because I think (hope I don’t jinx this by posting about it-again!) Mimzy has been sneezing less while I am using this litter. (It’s only been a week or so and no litter box tantrums, so I’m kind of holding my breath that he likes this one better.)

Even Pip seems to like it. (shock of the century!) Unfortuantely I have to finish off a last bag of GM, so I’m using that for her until it’s gone. Fiver uses Feline Pine + Carefresh as it’s easiest on his feet. (What a bunch of spoiled buns!)

But when I cleaned up this morning, it looked like there was a white dusty patch on the floor in front of where Mimz comes out of his box. I checked the bottom of the box and it’s not sludge, it must be coming from the litter. Also, I detect just the slightest perume from this litter…I am shocked it doesn’t irritate his already overworked sinuses.

Do any of you who use YN find this white powder on the bunny cage floors or near the litter box? (and is there a perfume in it?) I am rather stumped as to where else it would’ve come from, I’ve never seen it before.

Wouldn’t it be horrible though, if after all these doctor visits and intense cleaning and medicating and tests, we find out it was really just the litter all along that he’d developed a sensitivity to? 0_o

BTW, I also got myself a small tower fan/ionizer that seems to be keeping the air nicer in the bunny room. Maybe a combination of the two will help Mimzy with his sneezing. ^_^

I use yesterdays news and have never noticed this. Is it possible that you got the scented stuff? It has a blue ring if perfumed compared to the yellow on the bag that is scent free.

I don’t see a blue ring? The main packaging is green, the graphic that has the logo on it IS blue and it does say “fresh scent”. Is that what you mean?
This was the only kind they had there. Do you think it is not safe for the bunnies/ 0_o

It wasn’t the dried residue you sometimes see in where they’ve peed? Like he could have peed outside the box and it’s just dried there?  Or peed over the back eddge and it’s run underneath the box and pooled infront of it?

I don’t know about it not being safe for rabbits. I use YN for my rats and they shouldn’t have the scented stuff, but rabbits aren’t as sensitive to that stuff as rats are (like pine and cedar, while not good for rabbits cause severe breathing problems and even death in rats more easily). I think that maybe you should try to find out what the scent is and then determine how safe it would be. Can you ask your petstore to order YN for you? I find it to be almost completely dust free and it might just be a solution for you or at least help a bit.

Yesterday’s news is safe – they do have a fragranced one too though so you have to make sure you get the unscented.

I don’t think the scented is not safe but the unscented is preferable.

All I have ever used is Yesterdays news. I won’t even try another brand. I love YN. It’s great, and have never had a problem, nor have I seen the fragranced one. ???

Thanks guys, I’m definitely looking into buying the unscented next time, but even this seems to be working out for Mimzy much better! ^_^

I have used YN when I am out of Aspen. If it says “Fresh Scent” then it is the scented kind. The other kind says “unscented”. I have accidentally picked up the scented kind worried that my bunnies would not use it, but I just topped it with hay and munchies, and they were fine with it.
It sure would be something though if this was the answer to the Mimzy’s problems. Keep us updated about that.

As far as the whitish stuff, I have never had that in relation to this litter. Hmmmm.

Since you know that Mimzy’s problem seems to be allergies, it does seem likely that some litters will be harder on him than others. It would be great if YN works for him, and I agree that you could get your pet store to stock it for you. They usually do for a regular customer. I would switch to unscented though.

I don’t know what the powder is, since Sammy rejected YN (talk about fussy), but I have often seen a powdery stuff in my Kleenex boxes. It may be a dusty byproduct of ground paper. Or perhaps it got moist, softened, then crushed underfoot. Watch to see if there’s any more now.

Well his sneezing is back, YN or not. So I am not sure what it is anymore. It just doesn’t seem to be as bad as it was with the Good Mews.
I did Spend all day with a sick dog yesterday, perhaps I brought something in on my clothes that irritated him.
Luckily, weather is nice enough now I can keep the bunny room window open. The fresh air is a definite positive for his condition, as long as it doesn’t blow too cold.

The hard part about litter (not just for bunnies but cats too) is that our local supermarket doesn’t keep ANYTHING in stock with any regularity. I am thinking the best way to go will be to order in bulk from someplace instead of counting on it being there one week and not able to find it the next.
Where I’m going to keep a palette of litter I have no idea. 0_o

Has your vet discussed giving injection of penicillin? Is that an option for him?

Actually, yes Jerz…but she wanted me to wait for awhile to see if he got on without it. I think it’s a ‘no.’
I just have to get over Taiku’s vet bill for now…I also have an outdoor cat who is in need of vaccinations, so we’re going to be seriously strapped. So far, minimal sneezing, but enough to make me worry, so….

I also forgot that my vet sells Yesterday’s News. I meant to look today and see if it was the unscented. *smacks forehead*

What a cute little bunny in your avvy, btw. ^_^ Is it a doll or, it looks like that claymation they use for things like Wallace and Grommit.

Good to know you have the Penicillin option for in the future if it’s needed.

Avvy bunny:   It’s a little knitted figure.  I saved pix of about 5 different ones but I don’t remember from where!

I think I can make out above its head “Demonstrative Bears and Friends presents TODD”  I had edited name out as it was too visible.  Perhaps it’s a craft magazine of sorts?

btw, as to your qu about clarity of avatars – try putting link to regular picture without resizing it.  It should resize itself.  It’s only when they are really big that they might not work.  The clarity seems to remain when pix are shrunk but not the other way round.  So if your avvy link is to a really small picture, it might actually be auto enlarging it and that’s when it becomes pixelated. (??????)

Hogeeze, never thought of that! >.< I'll get a few pix ready to try maybe later this afternoon, thanks Jerz!

I saw some lovely bunny knitting patterns on Etsy, sadly I can’t knit.

I did get my sock bunnies from Widget’s Blogspace/Half an Acre in the U.K. though…gosh are they cute! ^_^
