Hi!  Thanks for taking the time to read this.

My rabbit Mischi, is nearly three years old and while he does the bulk of his potty business in his litterbox, he still likes to leave about 20 or less buttons around the area he stays in.   I try scooping them up and transferring them to his litterbox to make a point, but he insists on sharing his poop with my floor.

Also, he likes to poop and pee just outside his litterbox perimeter sometimes–almost a taunt!

Any ideas on how I can make this little bunny stick to the litterbox alone?

        Thanks!

        -Bethany

          Is Mischi free roaming?

As for the perimeter is he peeing over the box do you think? Maybe he needs a high sided box.

            He is free roaming, yes.

And no he isn’t peeing over the top of the box–it has a lid. He is actively sitting outside the potty and doing his business. Pushing the boundaries, the little stinker.

Oh bad bunny LOL :~) or too lazy to get in the box.

Do you think he might benefit from an additional box? I have one free roaming rabbit though and he leaves a few pellets scattered about too. It’s so few though that like you I just scoop them up.

I found that Freya has a favorite spot to leave her pellets in a back little cubby-ish area of the room. The wall she likes is about 3 feet long, so I put a ltter box right in the middle which she avoided like the plague. So I put a food dish in there. She hasn’t knocked off the poops along the rest of the wall yet, but she has started doing some of her business in the box. All I can do now is remain hopeful that one day she’ll learn. Til then it’s the vacuum every evening. At least she never pees anywhere but the bathroom. Sigh… oh how I wish it was the bathroom litterbox and not the bathroom floor lol.

Does he leave poos all around the house, or just in the vicinity of the litterbox? My bun leaves a couple in his cage, near the litterbox, but since he doesn’t poo at all outside of the cage I let it slide and clean them up every day or two and put them in his box. As for the peeing, I don’t really know what to do about that! Maybe if you put boxes and things around the litterbox so he can’t really get to the area, he’ll just have to go in the box instead. Also, you could maybe try putting all of his hay in the box (or put a hayrack right above the litterbox). If he has access to hay and food outside of his litterbox it might be causing him to leave a few extra poos around while he’s eating.

my little bunzle hangs her butt over the side to poop and pee so i put down a potty mat for training puppies and everything that does not make it in the box lands on the mat and i just pick it up and throw it away everyday.

My foster bunny used to leave a few little turds around the room a day, but since it was so few it wasn’t a big deal…

parrbear3, you should get a high-sided box or a bigger box so you don’t have to spend all that money on the mats.

sibley, i have a high sided box. she has still found a way to hang her bottom out. the mats are also good for when she is being lazy.

Do you have any other animals or are you around other animals? It sounds like the “buttons” (love that as a word for poo), are territorial because of how much are left and the fact they are spread around. You also said he does this in the area he hangs out in – how big is the area? I know he is free roaming but obviously he is claiming the “area” as his. He may be more prone to do this if there are other animals around or scents of other animals on you.

Also, you may have to do a litterbox refresher course which will mean confining him temporarily so he can understand what is his territory in comparison to the rest of the house.

Oh my that sounds so frustrating.  cotton leaves a few near the bedroom door now n then.  It was a lot worse but it died down since I put a litterbox there.

                            They can be so exasperating.
