I don’t even know how to ask this question, the subject line sounds a little weird…. anyhow:

Lately Ruffles has been ticking me off.  He has been unusually destructive.  Everytime I let him out of his cage, he starts chewing the carpet.  I caught him humping Daisy, and he has NEVER ever humped her during the bonding process or anytime after that since they’ve been housed together.  So what’s going on?  Is he mad at me?  The only thing I can think of is that he is having that “urge” and he can’t fulfill his drive.  He’s been neutered forever, but do they still have a season of friskyness?  Or is he trying to tell me something else?

This is my first spring with both Max and Meadow. Max became a little humping machine several months ago, so for him, I don’t think it’s seasonal. Is Daisy okay with his advances? There is no harm in allowing them to hump as long as they’re doing it the “right way”(and nothing really you can do to prevent it), if you notice her getting aggressive in return, we’d have to take it from there.

It’s possible that with Ruffles, it could be seasonal, but I don’t really know. Is he behaving normally otherwise: eating, pooping, etc? Is he going thru a shed? There may be something in their instincts/wiring that alerts them that it’s springtime, and that might go beyond hormones. As far as the carpet chewing, has he ever done that before at any point? Could it be that he just now realized that chewing carpet is “fun” and now that’s what he wants to do?

Well, BinkyBunny has had a difficult time with Jack humping Vivian lately, and he has been neutered forever as well. Did Ruffles ever sire a litter? I think that made Jack more active, but it isn’t necessarily the cause.

How old is he? It sounds a lot like teenager behavior (around 8 months) that can be difficult. It is certainly possible that he feels more active in the Spring – it happens to humans – so that can’t be ruled out as a possibility.

I would suggest getting him some new chew toys to distract him from the carpet. I have some seagrass mattes that I put on top of the carpet spots that started to get chewed. They are good for his teeth and digestion to chew, and protect the rug. You can get little squares that you can cut down more so they are not as obvious.

Daisy doesn’t seem to mind his humping, she is more in love with him than he is with her (typical man-woman relationship I guess). He’s mostly normal, eating, pooping etc. I catch him flopping all the time so I know happy and feels good. We got him last August and she said he was about 5 month then, so he’s about a year and a half. The sea grass idea is good, I’ll try that since he seems to go for the same spot every time he’s out (It’s his current project right now…. chewing a hole in the carpet). He’s never had a litter, he’s a Petco bun and I know they fix them when they are babies. If he had words I think he would be saying “I want a later curfew, you’re being horribly unfair mom”, then the stink eye…. he’s a naughty bun these days.
