Hello everyone!! Im about to get a bunny, already picked out, in a week and I want to make everything perfect for when he comes home. He is a flemish giant/japanese harlequin. I planned on letting him free roam around my master bath while he was young and eventually let him roam the whole master bath and bedroom. But looking around not to many people have wrote about having them on tile floor, is there a reason that I dont know about? If its a problem then I can make room for him in the bedroom on a floor rug to start with. Anyone have any experience with bunnies and tile floors?

Most bunnies do not like to hop/walk on slippery floors- although they generally do like to lay on tiles to cool down and rest.  I would think a bathroom floor would be just fine, just make sure to give your bunny something to get off of the slippery floor- like cardboard, fleece blanket, etc.  The advantage to the bathroom floor is that for littertraining it should be easy to clean as your bunny is first learning.

Look around the bathroom at your bunnies eye level to see if there is anything the little rascal might get into- caullking around the fixtures, cords, etc- and then remove or bunny proof any possible problem areas.

Are you planning on closing he door- or are you putting up a barrier to keep the bunny in the bathroom when the bun needs to be confined?  A barrier or baby gate might help the bunny to still feel like a part of the household even if the door is closed.  But you would have to make sure you use something secure and small enough that they can not slip thru or shove aside.

One of my bunnies- Cotton- now that she is about 1 1/2 years old almost no barrier will stop her unless it is permantly installed- like a door or baby gate- or firmly wedged in place by something so heavy she can not budge it.  She is like a cat- if the area is blocked off- she wants to get in there BAD- and she will shove, bite, dig and try to toss the barrier until she gets her way.

EDIT: sounds like a beautiful bunny- you will have to post pics once you pick up your bunny!!!!

Congrats! A young Flemmie/Harlequin? I am *dying* to see photos!!!

Slipping is uncimfortable for animals, especially since a rabbit is basically wearing ‘fuzzy slippers’ permanently. I agree with Katnip above to put down a large piece of card board or even a grassmat; be careful with synthetic rugs as a young rabbit might chew it and ingest inedible fibers. Other than that, I think it”s a great surface for litter training and you will appreciate the easy clean-ups.

I can’t wait to see pics – I adore big buns (and I cannot lie)

Pretty much what everyone else has said – some buns don’t like slippery floors.  They can get used to them though – I have hardwood floors and a free-range bun and while she does prefer to have her binky-fests on one of the rugs I have a plain tile floor in the kitchen and she likes to lie on the bare tile – I think it feels nice and cool on her tummy.

                *spits coffee on computer monitor*

Welcome here.  Like the others said, he should get used to the floors eventually, but you’ll want something non-slippery down for him as well.

Keep an eye on the bathroom, if you are using that as an enclosure, make sure it has good air circulation and that it does not get all steamed up when he is in there.  You may end up having to bunny-proof further.  Buns like to chew on wood, so it’s possible that the wood cabinets and/or baseboards may need to be blocked off.

Have you considered actually getting an xpen and setting that up in your bedroom instead?
