I wanted to drop a quick note to see if anyone had any suggestions: My son (9) has been wanting a rabbit for quite some time (over a year or so) and I’ve been reading all I can on the care of rabbits. On April 25th (three Saturdays ago), we picked up two male Californian bunnies (8 weeks old) from a 4-H breeder who shows these Californians at the local county fairs. I see this family at our local farm show quite often, so I was hoping to get healthly bunnies. She had about six or so each male and female bunnies- all Californians.
On the way home, we picked up some Timothy hay (Kaytee brand IIRC) from the local feed store, since I’ve read that either Timothy or Alfalfa is the best food for a young rabbit (but I realize that Alfalfa is too high in protein for a grown rabbit). This is all we offered for food, other than a dandilion leaf every now and then. The cage, water bottle and feeder were all new.
Anyway, one bunny looked lethargic this last Sunday night (they were with us three Sundays at this point). It couldn’t hold itself up on it’s front legs. The next day, it actually looked fine- it was hopping around, eating fine. By the next morning, it had passed away. The second bunny (I have to assume it’s brother) passed on last night, without a sign of the impending result.
Needless to say, my son is pretty sad. We’re new to rabbits, but I thought I knew at least the starters how to care for rabbits from all the reading I had done. Can anyone shed some light on this situation? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
John
