So I finally got Bambi yesterday, and he’s the cutest! He doesn’t have ANY litterbox training, and he’s about seven weeks old. I read on a different thread that anything that could absorb pee should be only in the litter box to encourage him only peeing there. I currently have a towel down in his cage so that he doesn’t slide all over the place on the plastic. Should I take it out? I’ve never litterbox trained before, and I saw the article on BinkyBunny about training,  but any extra advice is very welcome.

Usually at that age they don’t have much training so that’s not unusual.

I would put a litterbox in his area with appropriate litter and some hay on top. See if he’ll use it. Figure out where he goes and move the box there.

Remember too that this is a brand spanking new environment and he is young and probably in sensory overload so he’s not going to be as trainable right away. Babies are usually more of a challenge to train than adults.

I think the towel is fine for now.

Also start small with the area you allow him in – this will also allow him to get comfortable in his new environment.

I brought my baby home Friday night. Freya is the cutest little thing ever, but she’s sure a handful. She’s staying in the bathroom until she gets the hang of the litterbox, but she’s decided her favorite place is behind the bathroom door. Short of taking the door off it’s hinges it’s impossible to put her box there. We’re working on slowly moving her area a little at a time til she gets over to her box. She’s really good though about not having any accidents when she comes out to play, she’ll always go back in the bathroom to do her business. I’m already dreaming of the day I can go to the bathroom still groggy and barely awake without playing hopscotch around her poos. I know she’ll get the hang of it eventually, but I still make sure she has nice soft places to lay and hang out other than her box. Yesterday I went to use the bathroom and she went too while I was in there, and in her box!!! I was so proud. I’ve been surprised, but she hasn’t peed on anything else in the room that’s absorbant. Just her box. Other than that she’s happy to go on the tiles in the corner.

I would leave the towel in for now unless he pees on it. When I got my bunny he was 8 weeks and had no training and I found that he pretty much litter trained himself in a day or two. I gave him a blanket because he was afraid of the slippery cage floor and he didn’t pee on it once. So wait and see how he does and if he does try to pee on the towel, take it out until the litter training is more entrenched.

How exciting that Bambi is finally home!!!!!!!!

When we brought Stanley home, she was only about 7 weeks old and had no clue to what a litter box was and I had no clue as to how to litter train a bunny (hadn’t found the great people here to ask yet either!!!). We originally covered the entire floor of the cage with a layer of litter (carefresh) and observed where she was going potty over the next few days. Once it seemed the majority was in one location, we started just putting the litter in a litterbox and the litterbox where she liked to go. She was confused at first, then after having a “duh” moment, I realized I should probably throw some hay in one end of the box (I had adults I did this for – so like I said – duuuuuuuuuhhhhhh). After that she cought on pretty quickly!!!!!

Bambi peed on the towel once, but I moved the litter box in the corner he peed in and I don’t think he’s peed again yet- so we’ll see if he uses the litter box. I made sure to take the towel out and clean the spot, and I put a tissue with his pee in the box. He just randomly poops everywhere, though! I’ve been putting everything in the litter box, so hopefully he’ll get the hang of it soon. Bambi loves his litter box, though- he just kind of lounges around in it.  Will the pooping get better? Is he trying to establish his new cage as his or something? He also isn’t eating very much hay, if any. Is that okay?

I think he is just going through an adjustment period. Continue offering him the hay and eventually he should try it.

He’s probably just pooping everywhere for now because that’s what he’s always done and that type of thing is normal for baby rabbits. If you do see him pooping or peeing (or acting in that way) then I say scoop him up and stick him in the litter box. Wouldn’t hurt to put stray poops in there too – not certain if that really helps but it won’t hurt and maybe he’ll get the idea.

That’s what I figured. I just have to keep in mind that he’s still a baby, and is going through a lot of new changes right now. He’s eating his pellets normally, and I heard him attacking his little woven hay cave, so I’m not too worried. The pooping is not something I mind too much- I just want him to become a full fledged house bunny. I want to let him out to play all somewhere he has room to actually run, but I’m worried that it’ll mess up his toilet training, or scare him or something. Would it be okay? Or should I wait a little while longer?

Oreo’s not a baby, but he really had no litter training when we got him, He pooped everywhere, and pee’d pretty much where ever too. For about the first week I pretty much left him alone, then we really started hitting it hard, Everytime he pooped I would scoop it up and put it in his litter box. Then when he pee’d I would get some on a tissue and put it in his box, and of course cleaned up the mess. I found that along with a towel or sheet, newspaper works goodto help them not slide around as much, and it helps when you have to clean up too! I use Equine Fresh pellet bedding in his litter pan, along with hay of course. I think just letting him get adjusted, like others said, will really help.

Haha, Freya poops everywhere too. I can’t wait to go to the bathroom first thing in the morning without tiptoeing through her mess. She’s SO noctournal, silly bunny. Good think I’m a late night person so I can stay up with her.

Bambi is a total night owl too! I was hearing him race around his cage all last night and playing with his toss toys. He was out of his cage for a while today, so I’m hoping I tuckered him out.

As for the newspaper idea, Sarah, it’s working out much better. With the towel I was using, I didn’t really think he was peeing because I couldn’t tell, and even when it was obviously damp to the touch, the wet spot was almost invisible. With the paper, it’s really obvious as to where he’s going, and easier to clean up. It’s also much easier to get some of the mess on a tissue for his litter box then it was from a super absorbent towel. So, fellow beginners- try newspaper!

Yay for litter boxes! Bambi is now only peeing in his litter box, but he still poops everywhere.  I try to put all of them in his litter box, but I’m not sure if that’ll do anything. He rarely poops outside of his litterbox when he’s on his run- only in his cage. I’m just curious to why this happens. Hahaha….he is binkying as I type this. Silly bunny.
