My dog Shadow is having difficulties again.

Last night about 6 or 7, he was unable to keep his right rear leg from spasming and twitching. It’ll shoot straight out behind him and the muscles of his thigh will tremble, then he pulls it in close to his body and it will stop for a moment, then the whole thing begins again. He has trouble putting weight on it and is gimping around pretty bad.

The cause is most likely that I took him for too long of a walk yesterday afternoon and he’s stressed the muscles past their point of endurance for a 14 year old dog, or perhaps the spinal column in his lower back is overstressed. (This is similar to the problems my husband has with his back, so the two of them are both walking around like, well, a couple of old men!) Also it’s possible he either slipped a disc when he was sleeping off the walk or perhaps something more sinister is occuring. He was operated on in January for tumors, so we hope this doesn’t mean he’s having further trouble with some kind of growth.

We have some Metacam left over from his earlier surgeries. We just dosed him with some this morning and it looks like it may be helping somewhat, but we don’t like to use it because one side effect is rear leg weakness. If this continues, I really will have to call the vet.

It could be something, it could be nothing. Either way, an urgent request for the magnificent healing vibes of the BinkyBunny.com community is needed. Neither my husband nor I want to think this will be Shadow’s last illness. We have the whole summer ahead of us for fun and play! We want him to be with us and happily able to enjoy it without pain or disability.

Many thanks in advance to all of you. Thsi is truly the only place I can come with a need like this, beyond my own fervent prayers. Thank you and bless you!

Why do I think a warm bath or curling up on the rug with pillows for a days rest might do some good? I am going to think positively and decide that it was just the overexertion of the walk, and he will be much better tomorrow. Just don’t push those old men too much.

Hi guys! Thank you SO much for all the healing vibes! They worked because he is MUCH better today! You guys are THE BEST! ^_^

TARM, Shadow is my MacKenzie River Husky, he just had tumor and then GDV surgery within a few months of each other earlier this year. He’s been an indoor dog ever since because they shaved his beautiful coat off. If you search the forum, you’ll probably come across the posts I put up on the subjects. His pictures are there also.

Yes, Pam, I was lucky this time. It does appear the he pulled something either in his back or leg/hip and he was quite gimpy for a few days. Poor thing. Hubby took over walking him (only let him out for small jaunts to go pee and such) and it was also unseasonably cold for the last few days, so that can’t have helped. Being on a strict boiled chicken diet with the occasional can of ID or lamb and rice doesn’t seem to be helping him keep weight/vitamins in his system either. I did some research and magnesium is supposed to be good for cramping muscles, so we’re going to see about getting him a vitamin supplement for his very bland diet.

It scared both of us. We were afraid, with how suddenly it came on, that this was finally the end. I thought he’d had a small stroke or something, since the lameness seemed to be only on one side, but he was still bright and chipper at the time-albeit confused that his leg was doing such strange things- and has not shown any other signs of brain trauma.

I do have to wonder though…why does this stuff only happen when *I* walk him?? I am not sure the hubby even trusts me with him anymore.

But anyway, he is much better and thanks again everyone for your good vibrations! ^_^

He got uppity enough today to chase a squirrel down the road while the hubby was walking him. *groan* So he’s a little stiff again this evening, but full of P & V. >.<
I swear, stubborn is just not a strong enough word…for EITHER of them! ~_~
