        Hiya, me again!

So we have had Widget just over 3 weeks now in our little flat, he is ten weeks old and had got litter training in his hutch down to a fine art, virtually from day 2, he was using his diggy box in the hall for toileting and we had almost got him trained to use the litter tray in the lounge (currently on the sofa as he kept going there).

But suddenly he has decided he doesnt like the litter tray on the sofa and keeps going next to it! He also did four caecetrophs within an hour and a half on he sofa which worried me, my partner put him in the litter tray and he jumped straight out and did another one, but he didnt eat any so that is also worrying me. Anyhoo, he has decided he would rather stop using it and go next to it.

Then, even more confusing, is my partner checked the tray in his hutch, and he has started doing his business on the other side of the hutch instead of in his tray! But when my partner moved it to the other side, he just went back and did it where the tray was originally! Hmmm.

He had his myxi jab on Tuesday and seemed absolutely fine after it, then the next day is when all this litter training seemed to go out the window. But that is also when I went back to work after having three solid days off just with me and Widget mostly. I work away for upto 5 days at a time alot so it is my partner currently dealing with it and he’s not sure what to do or what’s caused the sudden change in behaviour.
Could it be after effects of the myxi jab? Or me going away after spending lots of time with him? Help! My partner is losing patience.

        Thankyou again.

My first thought was that the myxi made his poopies/urine smell differently, so he doesn’t recognize it as his own and thinks another animal has used his litter pan, so he’s avoiding it. If that is the case, and you have some of his older used litter in a trash pail, try putting just a small amount in the pan so he can smell his own smell.

Another possibility is that he’s decided he no longer likes your brand of litter. You can buy a very small quantity of a new brand (what do you use now?) and see if he uses it.

I’m a bit confused about his going in the pan on the couch. I would suggest discouraging him from being dependent on doing anything up on the couch. He will be better off being trained on the floor in the long run. Set a litter pan next to the couch and encourage him to go there. Again, put a little bit of his own used litter or poops in it to remind him it’s his.

There might also have gotten an odor in his pans that is bothering him. Wash them out thoroughly with water, baking soda and vinegar. It fizzes on contact, but should get it cleaned of any other scents. Rinse thoroughly then put in fresh litter and his used bits. See if that helps.

Also put a small amount of hay in one corner of the pan for him to munch on. Sometimes bunnies like to poop and eat at the same time. It is good for his digestion.

          Hope this helps!

Thankyou. We put the litter tray on the couch after he started toileting there quite a bit, with the intention of gradually moving it away and onto the floor, as you said, we just havent got to that stage yet. He only has sawdust in his trays, which is what he has used his whole life so far, so no idea why he would suddenly dislike it. Maybe it was the myxi jab interfering. Will have a go at your suggestions and see what happens. thanks again, xx

My bunnies kept doing a few cecals and not eating them, then i read that eating too many pellets and too much protein can cause this as they eat all they need. So i cut down on the pellets and gave more hay and veg and she has stopped doing it now. When she did do it even if she was using her litter tray properly she still always left the uneaten cecals anywhere on the floor like she didnt see them as a potty item. Hope it has got better, I also started putting dandelions or some treat in the litter tray just before letting her out every time and herding her to it so she wants to go there first everytime and is excited about prospect of treat in the vain hope she might like using it more lol seems to be getting better so far, but still territory marking at mo although not really long since her spay. xx good luck x

Thanks for the advice. What if he has a mix instead of pellets? Should I just reduce the amount of mix I give him and just assume if he gets hungry he will eat more hay? (Wouldnt be a bad thing actually as he doesnt eat it very much really) xx

                  Hi,
Not really sure what you mean by a mix. A food mix or a litter mix?

I think you can safely replace the sawdust and have luck with a new litter. Shavings, like Pine or cedar, are not considered safe for bunnies, so you could try changing to the soft brands like Carefresh or the pellet type like Yesterday’s News or Feline Pine. My Samantha is very particular about her litter – she went in her pan but until I bought a brand she approved of, it got dug and thrown out of the pan for days. So test new products by buying the smallest amount first.

A medicine can often upset normal habits. Also your change in routine. But a 10 week old in a new home for only 3 weeks is going to go through many adjustments and experiments with his surroundings, and with you.

The pellet mix should really just have pellets in it, I know that some of them have fruit and nuts and other things, but the pellet mix should really just be timothy hay based, and just plain pellets. As far as the amount of pellets, I’ve heard anything from 1 tablespoon per day to 1/4 of a cup. I feed my bunnies two tablespoons of pellets per day.

Lots of treats can also cause excess cecals, fruits or carrots or other treats should only be fed at about 1 teaspoon per day.

As far as the couch, it is a very frequent issue that bunnies pee on the couch, I believe it is because the couch smells so much like us humans that the bunnies really like to start marking it. This also happens with beds, so usually you have to discourage bunnies from hopping up on the couch or bed or else they will likely start marking it.

Hopefully with all the great suggestions above the litter training will start to improve – let us know if you need more tips!

Hi guys, Just an update, So we have found some hay that Widget likes (actually cant get enough of) he does like the Timothy hay but absolutely loves the oat, wheat and Barley stuff, so that has solved one of my worries. And the litter tray in the lounge is now on the floor and he has stopped coming up on the sofa so much (although still poo’s or pee’s as soon as he gets up there, but like I said, he doesnt come up very much now). All toileting habits have returned to normal, so I think it must have just been effects from the Myxi jab. Thankyou for the advice.
