I took Hubble into the vets today (finally found a good one, albeit far away). It turns out that Hubble had quite a few spurs on his right side, with some of them about a centimeter in length. No abcesses or other trama though so that is at least something. Still cost me $215! Anyways, the vet said that he had some of the worst teeth he had ever seen, not because of the length, but because of how messed up his little mouth is. He doesn’t actually appear (that’s important!) to have any molars on the top right side. This is not good. Because of this I will potentially have to put him under and have this done every 6-12 months minimum. Quite honestly I don’t have the money to do this that often, especially because of the other potential problems he has. The vet did recommend that I go see a specialist at UC Davis and talk about potentially removing the bottom molars on the right side. That is a major surgery though, and I probably could not afford it anyways. I will still call and maybe make an appointment though to discuss what we might do. Any suggestions? I feel so lost and confused. I love my bunny, but I have to stay within my means.

Oh no, I’m so sorry! Did the vet find the spurs during a routine exam or was Hubble having problems eating?

I don’t have any suggestions for you, though I wish I did. I hope you the specialist is able to offer you some affordable options.

From my understanding (I have never had one of my rabbits with this problem though)- if a rabbit is missing any of the molar teeth- the molar under or above it will have nothing to grind against as they eat- so nothing will wear the molar down and it just keeps growing and causes problems.

Did they take an x-ray to see if any of the molar root is present and if it might regrow?

I had to get Rucy’s molar spurs trimmed a few times a year, but as she aged, amazingly I had to do it only once year. She also has had many molars removed so I hear ya with the expense. I am sorry for the financial burden that will come with this. I would suggest talking to them about this and see if they can do any price reduction and/or payment plans.
Some places also take “care credit” a low interest credit card that is ONLY for vet or health care.

You could also compare rates with other rabbit savvy vets. Try Dr. Carolynn Harvey at Chabot Vet Clinic in Hayward.  She’s the one that took  care of all of Rucy’s dental issues.

There is also an organizationt that helps people with limited financial resources pay vet bills. http://www.imom.org/ http://www.imom.org/

I’m sorry to hear that. Talk to the specialist and maybe see if there are any other vets around your area that do these types of surgeries. Honestly, since he is missing the upper molars, it may be more cost-effective to remove the bottom rather than have them trimmed every so often for the rest of his life. How old is he? If he is still relatively young, less than 5 or 6 years, you will possibly spend more money trimming than you would doing the surgery and getting it over with. There should not be a problem with putting him under to have the surgery done. Get all the facts before you make a final decision, and let us know how it goes…

I would see the specialist and see what options you may have. It may in the long run (cost wise) be better to remove those molars if that is what the specialist recommends as Beka stated.

Do look at the Care Credit card as well.

Unfortunately dental problems can be ongoing and can be costly. You may be able to work something out with the vet as far as costs though if you do end up just taking him regularly for a molar trim.

Thank you for all the info and replies! For an update on him personally; he seems to be doing a lot better, he ate some greens last night (for the first time in ages!), and is seemingly more active than he was before. Unfortunately since he came to me with the spurs I do not really know what ‘normal’ behavior is for this rabbit. He does seem much happier though! Now I can just hope beyond hope that he might fix himself a little now. Maybe eat a little hay, have molars magically appear on his top right side, and have them all line up. Though I don’t think his bite will magically fix itself like our foster pony’s did. On that note, I want to know what the deal is with my animals having bad teeth! My Chihuahua cost me $600 in retained teeth!

Anyways, I forgot to mention in my first post that one of his molars actually fell out when the doctor was working on him, so maybe his other teeth aren’t in their very deep, and time will tell if that one will grow back. I do wonder if regular molar trims may just be something that I’ll have to do anyways. I really feel stuck! I know it will all work out, but I want a lasting solution.

Unfortunately I have no credit at all. This summer (one more week until!) I was going to try and get a student card to start building some credit. So maybe at some time I can get one, but I can also take a loan from my parents for now. I just absolutely try to avoid that at all costs. Thank you again for all the suggestions, and I’ll keep everyone updated as things go along. I know it will work out, I just have to keep telling myself that.

Definitely keep us posted and keep looking at other options. If it is going to be a regular costly thing, perhaps you can work out a payment plan with the vet. There is also this article written by the SPCA on what you can do if you can’t afford vet care http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/what_you_can_do_if_you_are_having_trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html
It’s actually got some pretty good suggestions and stuff that may help.

Thank you for that link K&K, I will look at it closer!

I have an awesomeness major update! Hubble has been eating hay! He loves the stuff! So I think I will have an idea of when he’ll need his teeth taken care of.

Oh I’m so happy he’s eating his hay! I think that a change in eating habits is usually the first sign that bun owners look for when they have buns with bad teeth… that’a good way to gauge how he’s doing since you can’t really look at his teeth that well.

I am just so stoked, words can not describe how I’m feeling. He just seems so much happier. He got all angry and grunted at me when I gave him his medicine (Metacam), and actually thumped at me when I put him down. Which I know sounds contradictory to him being happy, but he is, even if he’s temporarily angry. I’ll try to get a film of him eating hay tomorrow morning. I know it’s something that most of us see every day, but it’s super special for me! (Plus I promise that he does something super cute when I put fresh hay in).

I think that’s what it comes down to. We love these little guys so much, so when we can do something to make their lives a little bit better/healthier/happier… it’s completely worth it!

I’m happy that you are seeing some immediate positive effects post treatment.  If you are a college student…it may be pretty easy for you to get a credit card (unfortunately).  Care credit can be pretty easy to get, you can visit their website to get more info.  I first got care credit for laser eye surgery & once I paid that off I keep it for vet bills.  You can usually get 90 days or 6 months same as cash, which is a very good deal.  Just some thoughts for you.
