Hey remember when I was talking about the baby bun in the rescue forum that I thought didn’t have a mom but later I saw her, but I never did find the nest or where it went….well….

I was trying to clear out our yard and was in the little island that has a bunch of herbs in it…I have no clue what some of them are but I was pulling up the dead stuff and racking up dead leaves around it…almost kind of violently because I wanted to hurry and finish up.  I go by this one plant that I guess it’s some kind of sugar plant…well I go to get the leaves out and I see this ball of hair by a leaf.  I’m thinking it was feathers and I look closer and pull up the shrub to see if there’s anymore and there they were!!!  I think it was 4 or 5 baby bunnies!!!    They were so cute!!  I hurried and grabbed a camera and took a pic.  Awed at them some more and put everything back where I found it, plus some more dead leaves to cover them up a little more.

When I pulled up the shrub they all started moving their heads like they thought I was their mom and was going to feed them.  I’m like “no no don’t move anywhere!” and covered them back up.

I can’t believe out of all the houses around us, mama bun chose our house!

I was afraid I had disturbed them and the mother might not come back but I looked out the window and saw her right on time! She looked around cautiously and now she’s just sitting there feeding them

Wow, that is incredible! What a sight that must have been! It will be really cool if you get to see them as they grow bigger and bigger. Mama knew it was the yard of a bunny lover

Glad Mum didn’t abandon them. They look younger than that one you photographed in the resue forum…this could be a different litter.

I can’t tell, but they don’t look like they have the white blaze either.  Mmmmmm….curious!

Edit: Oh, didn’t see other pic. One of them has it!

Yes I think that other bun before might have been from her first litter (?). I remember awhile back there was a rabbit that kept hanging out at night by the side of the garage but would run away when a car pulled in the garage. And when I kept seeing her before she was probably waiting to deliver.

We have wild buns that are here year round. My husband and I swear they come here because they know it is safe. We talk to them all and make sure their little run patch from our shed where they hide to the neighbors back patio where they hide is always clear. It seems like every season they alway scome back and have their babies at our house.

Used to when we first got Carrera 6yrs ago we would leave the sliding glass doors open so the screen door was open in the spring and summer and the wild rabbits would walk right up to the back door to check out Carrera to see what she was. So cute!

How beautiful. That is very lucky to have a nest of baby bunnies. I don’t think mom will abandon them – you can always continue to cautiously check on them – you just don’t want to alert predators to the nest. Keep us updated on your babies :~)

Oh wow that is cool!  I hope ours comes back every year!  It’s funny because there are about 4 houses around us in the back.  One on each side and 2 behind us.  The one neighbor has dogs, the other no hiding spots or trees at all, and the other two behind us hardly have a back yard and it’s on a slope.  Supposively we have the best garden in the neighborhood….or at least the previous owners did.  We’re keeping one of the gardening boxes (there’s 8 total, it’s a bit much) and def. keeping the herb garden.  I showed my husband the nest today and she put some more fur around them.  I lifted the shrub up and one of them kicked it’s legs out at me

So far so good, right now both mom and dad bun are in our yard. Mom is feeding and attending to her babies and dad is close by keeping watch. Usually I just see the mother but maybe since it’s raining the dad wanted to make sure mom made it ok. She usually comes around 9pm every night. Didn’t see her yesterday but she might have fed them really quick while I was in the shower. I wish I could take pics for you guys! Too bad they only come at night. I went out today to do some yard work but it started to sprinkle so I didn’t get to but I went over by the bush and saw it wiggling! I didn’t move it at all but just wanted to make sure everything looked ok there. Keep you guys posted!

UPDATE: Well I checked on the babies almost every day when I was outside.  I saw when their little eyes were open!  About 3 or 4 days after I saw them with their eyes opened, they had left the nest.  They are so big now!  I’ve seen 3 of them hopping around our neighbor’s yard (who lives behind us).  One was even plalying with a chipmunk!

I did manage to take a picture of the mother bun…I think this was before they were born since she kept hanging out at our house and I hadn’t found the babies.

I don’t know if this is the same one or not; could be the father.

Ahhh, so cute! I love the little white blazes on their heads  Is this a younger litter than the one you saw earlier? I remember the other bunny was already running around outside on his own. I’m not sure if cottentails have more than one litter that quickly though.

We had bunnies come back to our yard every year and one of our dogs would usually find the nest, but he was too dumb to know what it was. Haha. After watching him sniff idly around in one spot for 5 minutes we’d investigate and it was always the new rabbit nest, but he never seemed to realize there was anything interesting about the nest except for a yummy smell. And he was a terrier too … so much for genetics. Haha.

The one I saw before was about the same size that those are now.  So that litter I pictured must have either been from another rabbit or was their second litter.  Haha it was a good thing he didn’t know what they were!
