Lucy bit me!! Ouch it hurts!  Her behavior has declined even farther, I can no longer pick her up without throwing a towel on her.  She was always scared about that but come on Lucy!  We were making progress with the trust issues.  But now she doesnt trust or like me at all, and honestly ive been avioding even attempting to pet her.  She never seriously bit, nipped but didnt break skin.  Anyways, she was running around and getting into everything as usual.  I had my squirt bottle as normal, and it doest phase her which is normal.  She found my luggage sticker thing from my train trip, and I dont even have a guess where she got it.  Well she started honking and dashing around like crazy, because the sticker got caught under her chin.  So of course I follow her and try to catch her.  HaHa thats funny, try to catch this wild thing.  So she finally realizes that ruuning around like death is on her heels isnt working and picks a corner to tear at the sticker.  Well she was getting off pieces and eating them and wouldnt let me near her, growling at me and the sticker.  So I just decided in the panic of it all to ignore her growls and lunges she always gives me and take the evil sticker off her chin.  BIG MISTAKE!  She grolwed louder then Ive ever heard and lunged and bit me, she drew blood!  So naturally I jump back and scream.  But my retreat wasnt enough and she followed me!  Honking growling lunging all the way across my room at me.  I shooed her in her cage with a nic barrier, I didnt want to touch her lol.  Hammer is so upset, he thumped during the whole episode and Im trying to get him calmed down but he  looks all bug eyed still.  Probably just staying on alert, in case devil bun Lucy does end up gnawing through the bars she is working at right now.  Poor Hammer.  And my poor finger.  And poor Lucy I quess, her hormones must be off the charts.  She is of age to be spayed, I was waiting until she ate veggies more consistantly so her recovery would be better and faster.  She was making slow progress with the veggies, so it was on hold until she ate more.  But, her spay is asap now believe me.  It will still be a while, I have to look at my weekends and see when I can stay with her, and come up with the money.  I want money to cover her spay plus an emergency just in case she recovers badly.  Plus graduation doesnt leave tons of time.  Im hoping for this wekend, because next weekend has no chance.  But the chances of getting an appointment and money in 5 days is slim to none.  I HAD an emergency bun fund, but I used  it on Hammer when he had his mental breakdown/teeth issues and havent thought about it since.  I think I have the most hormonal bun ever on my hands here, Im afraid she may be on lock down for awhile.  I feel bad not letting her out as much as she needs to be, but she destoys everything even with picking things up and excessive bun proffing.  And her litter box habits are horrible too.  Not to mention the fact that I cant touch her, even on normal terms she gives a tiny grunt and runs away.  Why on earth did I get a baby bunny?!  I do so solemnly swear I will never ever ever get a young bunny again.  Ever.

Ouch! Sounds like good idea – spay asap. Just give her her space in the meantime. Pre-spay Jersey would sit behind a curtain all day. I just had to leave her alone.
Have you seen the Killer Cuties thread in the Lounge? Lucy belongs there I think!

Meadow had very little out time during her Devil period betw/ 6 and 7 months… I just couldn’t handle it.

Baby bunnies are oh so cute, but they are most definitely NOT FOR ME. Never again.

They really make you appreciate the older, settled, adult buns. I don’t even think Max knows HOW to bite…

I would reccommend the spay too. My girl was the same way when she was younger before she was spayed. She was awful, I seriously considered getting rid of her (at the time), but once she was fixed her litter box habits and her growling/lunging/biting completely changed. She does none of those things anymore and has a few issues her peeing outside the box. I hope your finger feels better!!!

I am also a member of the “No baby bunnies” and the “No unfixed bunnies” clubs.  Cotton was a bit of a monster.  It is so hard to see your cute bundle of bunny fluff that used to cuddle and give kisses turn into a royal diva that lunges, growls and pees on everything.  So then you can’t wait for the surgery- but you are also anxious until you hear your bunny is OK- then you fret over getting them to eat normally.  So- doing that ONCE was enough for me.

BunnyLiz- even though you want to be around your bunny after surgery- if you do it at the beginning of the week- you have a better chance of getting your bunny in as a nonemergency appt (fee) if Lucy does need to go in.  We don’t do surgery on Fridays typically at our clinic for that reason- we are only open for 4 hours on Saturday- so there are almost 2 whole days that we are not open for any surgery follow ups if needed.

Yes… I agree with Katnip… a monday or tuesday might be better, especially if you’ll be home after school in the afternoons/evenings each day. If the vet will keep her until after you get out of school, you could go pick her up, get care instructions, etc and then be home with her the rest of that night. It’s not always possible for people to have off from school/college/work/whatever for the entire couple days post-surgery so don’t feel like you need to completely stop your life during this time.

Ack. My bunny boys were PERFECT GENTLEMEN and never had hormonal issues (I neutered them as soon as they dropped) and I STILL wouldn’t do baby bunnies again…lol

I actually am drawn to the senior bunnies. I don’t know why that is. With dogs I like them to be over 2 years of age and if I had cats I’d probably pick 10 year olds. I like lower energy animals, I guess.

oh poor BunnyLiz! I know how horrible they can be at that stage, my Pringles was a monster. If I hadn’t found BB site here, I don’t know what I would have done to get through it.

Giving her up never crossed my mind because I’m used to onery animals, but I did think about families who bought those cute little Easter bunnies without knowing they would turn into Tasmanian she-devils. No wonder so many end up in outside hutches and shelters. I think you should have to go through an orientation class and mental stress test before you’re allowed to get your first rabbit!

Come to think of it, maybe that’s why you see all those infuriating “I love my bunny but we have allergies and must get rid of it” ads……they’re too ashamed to write “WE ARE TERRIFIED OF THIS FLUFFY LITTLE BUNDLE OF EASTER LUV! HELP! SOMEONE COME GET HER BEFORE SHE KILLS SOMEONE!”   LOL

Ugh she is pushing my buttons! She isnt exactly nice today either. Good point Katnipcrzy, I checked it out and the exotic vet does surgery on mon-thur. and is in on sat. So a monday appointment is what im aiming for. I do at least have an emergency vet now though. I called to check appointments and see if she needs a pre spay exam, he is suppose to call me back soon. She has been checked before but at a different vet. My last day of school is the 20th, so ill probably wait until then to do the surgery so that I CAN be with her and not have to worry when im away at school. Hadnt thought about that until now, a big bonus.

Oh sure now you tell me don’t do baby bunnies!

Indy is just 3 months and is pretty good for now…but I look forward to getting him nuetered. I just tried to clip his nails today using the burrito thing….I got the fronts done before he wiggled away and bit me on the stomach for good measure. *sigh*

I’m so happy to have this site so I know what to expect.

Hahaha…yeah. I decided to get a baby bunny just because I’ve never had a baby animal before, and so that I would know for sure that he had nothing medically wrong with him, at least not for a while. All my other animals are shelter rescues- Bambi is from a friend of mine’s accidental litter from her two Holland Lops. Speaking of spaying, how much can you expect it to be for a young bunny? I called one local vet and they said that it would be $600-$700, whereas the other vet I called (who I decided to go to for all of Bambi’s everything) said it would be around $100. I just don’t understnd the HUGE difference in price. I was also wondering if VIP (which I’m getting after the 60 day period) covers spays.

My vet said it would be $72 plus the check up before hand which I think is $24. (and that the bun need to be at least 6months)

Oh wait, that price was for a neuter. I’m thinking a spay would be more.

Prices on a neuter/spay really vary, but I would say the $100-200 range is the most normal. To me, 600-700 is pretty strange, I have never heard of it being that high before.

Bunnyliz – I”m so sorry to hear that Lucy is having issues! We have had a couple aggressive bunnies, and it does require a lot of time and patience, but all of our agressive ones have really come around. For us, what we had to do a lot of was a lot of hand feeding of treats (unless you are getting bit when you do that!), and a lot of time just sitting on the floor and hanging out with them. We pretty much don’t stick our hands in their cages, except for litterbox time, when we get a bit of a grunt and a lunge but then they are OK after that.

I thought it was ridiculous too. It was a clear sign that they didn’t care for many rabbits and was seen as a more out of the norm procedure. That, or they were banking on the possibility that people wanting a neuter weren’t doing their homework.

Your other question, Amanda, about vet insurance…. no, it does not cover spays. However, if there were complications from the spay, it should cover that. Also, I THINK it would cover the pain meds for the spay… Pain meds for a female are VERY IMPORTANT. For such a low price, that leads me to believe those may not be included, so I’d double check with the vet about that.

Okay, that’s good to know. The procedure doesn’t cover the meds, but the woman I talked to said that they range between $10 to $30. Bambi is a male, and one of the reasons I specifically looked for a baby buck is because I knew how invasive and more expensive doe nueters are, and I would have worried (and paid) incessantly over the little guy. And in other news….

I’m scared now. I brought my beautiful girl, Freya, home Friday night and we’re still working on getting acquainted. She’s kinda old for a baby, about 3 months so she was only $10. We had just watched Marley & Me a week ago and made a joke about a “clearance bunny.” When we spent 20 minutes trying to catch her without scaring her the night we came home we wondered if we cursed her to be as horrid as Marley was. She’s got her first check-up in a little more than a week, I wanna make sure I know her and have all my questions ready when I go. We’ll certianly be scheduling her surgery also but between now and then I hope she doesn’t turn totally evil and try to eat me. I can’t be near her with socks on… she is OBSESSED with chewing on socks that are attatched to feet. Good luck with Lucy, I hope she straightens up for you.
