Rocky had his first vet appointment today, and it went really well.
The vet says he is about 8 months to a year old, he is a dwarf hotot mix and he’s not neutered. He was a really good boy for the exam, and his eyes, ears, teeth, tummy and heart all seem to be in great condition. The vet told me that I’m doing everything right, and it’s definately thanks to you guys and this website.
She guesses that he was dumped because either he started humping and/or spraying at his former home, or his previous owners had children and were hoping for a more kid friendly animal… Rocky doesn’t like to be picked up but he did tolerate it at the vet when she had to lift him into the scale – oh he is 3.2 lbs and she says he won’t get any bigger… Anyways, I’m so happy that he is healthy and now has a great home (and lots of great online friends, though he doesn’t know it) and I’m really thankful for this site and everybody’s help and advice.
The greatest thing is that his vet only sees rabbits and cats so she’s very rabbit savvy – she even had all kinds of props and things to demonstrate. She spent an hour with me just explaning things and when I told her I feed Rocky ‘Timothy Complete’ rabbit food, she said “Would you like some more?” I said, “Sure!” She said she had received a donation of some food and she wanted to pass it along to an owner rather than keep it and use it for the rabbits in the office or for her rabbits at home, so she gave me 2 5lb bags of food to take home! (Rocky also had some ticks when I brought him home and I told her I wasn’t sure if I got them all so she applied some Advantage to him and didn’t even charge me for the medicine)! How awesome is that? ![]()
Wow, your vet sounds awesome! I’m glad that little Rocky got a good checkup too.
Hurray!
How do you pronounce hotot?
like hoe-toe
Ah! I was hoping that was it, since hot-tot would be *so* awkward to say………….
That’s awesome! And your vet sounds great! Too bad Long Island would be a bit of a commute from Long Beach… ![]()
lol – right on Lizzie! Yeah, Lightchick, that’d be a serious trip! I think my vet gets people from Jersey, but I’m doubting CA!
I love your narcissistic (sp?) siggie, btw! ![]()
lol He just loves to lounge around behind that thing… I’ve since moved it to the kitchen so I have some new pics where you can not only see his reflection on the cage bottom but also on the tiles on the wall – funhouse effect style!
Post new piccies, please!
(By the looks of him in this picture, maybe he got a special brownie, too)?!?! lol just kidding
LOL ^ ! and he’s there by his reflections again too! Great you found a healthy bunny and a great vet. I so didn’t know it’s pronounced hoe-toe, I always say hot tot in my head! Luckily I don’t say it aloud to anyone because the only rabbit discussions I really have are online. Hoe-toe hoe-toe
I thought it was hottot, too but googled it and found a pronunciation guide for it. See how the bottoms of his feet are all brown? The vet told me that’s because he spent so much time outside. Eventually it will turn white like the rest of him. I really thought he just had brown fur on his feet!
Here’s hoping I don’t get too much ‘tude from him today, he was really mad at me yesterday after his exam, but I know it’s for the best!
I also did not know the correct pronunciation… LOL! I’ve never had to say hotot in everyday conversation… ;o)
That’s awesome that you’ve found a good vet! Also be sure to get emergency vet info (for nights or weekends), find out ahead of time where she refers her patients and make sure they are rabbit savvy as well.
When is he going in for the “big snip”? If you need any help with getting prepared for that, please ask!
I love that picture!
I have hotot wrong in my head also – I thought it sounded like “hoe – tot”. Well, at least we know what kind of a mix he is.
The vet actually told me I can call her anytime, even 3 in the morning, which is great. They are open 7 days a week, too… She told me that if he ever refuses a favorite treat, or ever doesn’t do something that he always does (greet me in the morning, etc). then that can mean that something’s very wrong. He is so new to me though that it will take me some time to get used to what is normal before I notice anything different! But I’m very happy that he’s healthy… Beka – the vet told me that I should get him snipped if he starts to display behavior like spraying or humping, and definately if I decide to get him a little girlfriend companion. The vet said that since he’s only been in the house for a little while he wouldn’t be comfortable enough yet to go ahead and do that kind of stuff so I’m going to wait and see how he is when he’s fully settled here. I was a bit surprised by that, as I assumed she’d want me to make an appointment right away, but I trust her and her experience with rabbits…
Also, I called the vet this morning and they say the put “Revolution” on Rocky, not Advantage… Is this okay?
Revolution ok I think. You said they used Advantage at the office though didn’t you?
The only one I know for sure that you must not use is Frontline.
No it was not Frontline. It was Revolution because I guess it works for mites as well as fleas, and I don’t think Advantage works for mites… Sorry for all the confusion!!!
I spoke with the vet’s office this morning so I’m sure. Also, it turns out they only forgot to charge me for the medicine, and here I thought it was a freebie! LOL oh well, I’m all paid up now and it was only 15 bucks, so no biggie! Kind of annoying though because I asked the girl when I checked out yesterday, “Does that include the medicine she put on him?” and she said no but not to worry about it… lol
Definately Revolution for mites. If they charged you, be nice if they sent you home with the tube. Oh well.
Love that picture!
Revolutions what I put on my foundlings, too. That stuff is hella expensive! A box with 3 tubes (1/2 tube=1 dose, but you can’t save the extra once the tube is open) was $40. You’re supposed to apply 1 dose a month for 3 months, so yeah, they should have just sold you the box… (1 dose hasn’t been enough in my experience. Little’s still back there shivering her back end, so something’s still nipping her!)
Oh, geez, good to know Lightchick, thanks for the info!
