So Mimzy’s culture came back today. He still has branhamella cattarhalis (not sure of spelling).
The lab found it was responding to amoxicillin, but of course we can’t use that on Mimzy. So Dr. said she’d ask them to do more sensitivity testing on it but it looks like she’s going to get me some TMZ (is that the right one?) for him.
I think whatever regimen she puts him on, it’s going to have to last longer than just 7-10 days for it to get rid of this organism.
Oh I hope your bunny gets better! Of course it has respond to a drug that bunnies can’t have… :-\
Hopefully this stuff will knock it on it’s head. Well, at least you know the culprit – again! (((Mimzy)))
Edit: You may find more info on this under Moraxella catarrhalis
From wiki: (note: not rabbit specific info)
Treatment
Treatment options include antibiotic therapy or a so-called “watchful waiting” approach. The great majority of clinical isolates of this organism produce beta-lactamases and are resistant to penicillin, with some suggestion of trimethoprim resistance in certain regions of the world. It is susceptible to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ), fluoroquinolonesLike Levofloaxacin, LEVODAY Gemifloxacin GQ320(, and most second and third generation cephalosporins. In addition, M. catarrhalis infection may be treated with erythromycin and amoxicillin-clavulanate.
Sounds like TMP may get it. I was reading that some strains are not as sensitive to the broad spectrum antibacterials (?) so further sensitivity testing in the lab is probably a good call.
I forgot it’s also called that. I hope the vet thinks to look under that name if she’s searching up info.
I sure do hope the new antibiotic will work. I don’t have it yet, we’re still waiting to hear from the vet about how the testing is proceeding, but I at least hope it’s going to be a longer regimen. I think the main problem is Mimzy is not on the medicines long enough. The Baytril agreed with him and only seemed to be doing the job just as we ran out, and of course you never get all the liquid out of the bottles-so what should be ten days of meds only wound up being about 7. >.<
I think the second antibiotic she gave him actually made things worse, as he would go into sneezing fits just after taking it. (It was some kind of Cipro derivative.) But he showed no signs of allergy to it or digestive upset, so I thought it was just the bacteria that was causing it.
Could using probiotics preventatively have caused the antibiotic to be less effective? I never gave them at the same time, would wait hours in between doses of each…but in my desire to keep his stomach from being upset, maybe I torpedoed the effect of the antibiotic?
How long is a round of TMP/SMZ? I get spooked when I read that bunnies can die from digestive problems a full ten days after stopping an antibiotic.
I don’t think probiotics have anything to do with the effectiveness of antibiotics.
It is possible that the antibiotic needs to be given longer. I’m pretty sure that only the vet can give you the dosage and length of time for using the antibiotic. I have used this particular one many times and it is supposed to have less gi problems using this. As far as the last statement – it’s probably not totally accurate and there may be other factors for those rabbits dying rather than stopping an antibiotic.
TMP is commonly used in small animals and usually tolerated by rabbits better than Baytril (not as likely to cause the bunny to stop eating). And most bunnies like it- it comes in liquid form and I think it is cherry flavored. (I am sure it also comes in tablet form- which would not be preferable for bunnies).
Thanks everyone! ^_^
Doctor prescribed Trimeth Sulfate, 14 days worth and she gave me extra syringes since they tend to deteriorate and I can’t slide the plunger on them after about 7 days. We were going to send off the culture for more testing, but it had to go to Washington and that would mean another week of waiting. Mimzy’s sneezing has been getting worse since last night and I don’t want to wait treatment any longer.
If this doesn’t work, we may have to go for the injections of antibiotics. But we’ve got our fingers crossed that this does the job. ![]()
Awe I am sorry she is still sick… I really really hope she gets through this alright and it goes away once n for all… How frustrating.
Oh, MM, this has been such an ordeal for you.

*where’d I put that hanky?*
*breaks out a long pair of tongs to grasp hanky with* ^_^ j/k
He continues to sneeze, but I notice already that his runny nose is turning to more of a crusty critter and he does have more gunk coming from his eyes, (not a lot-just enough to leave crusties), but he takes this medicine WAY better than the last one and has been such a sweetie through all this. ^_^ I even got a few more arm licks yesterday. *squee!*
Another thing, Fiver is taking even more interest in him as he spends more time out on the bed for his doses. He still grunts at him, but has firmly put the kabosh on me putting up a curtain over his pen so they don’t interact at all. He goes to chewing his litter box loudly until I take it down, and then he just sits and watches Mimzy wander on the puppy pad.
I am hopeful that if I get Mimzy cleared up, they may be able to spend more time with each other than just watching each other from across the bedroom.
Poor Pip. She gets to come out on the bed today for a nail trim. She’s going to wonder why I’m persecuting her.
Wish me luck, her nails are VERY dark and hard to find the quick on. >.<
I’m sorry Mimz-but it’s good you know what it is! And further sensitivity testing is a great option!
If it’s sensitive to amoxicillian would injectable penicillan be an option? I know that’s safe and they are related drugs….Out on a limb here though ![]()
Yes, Dr. did suggest we could go for the injections, but I’m holding that out as a last resort, since we’d have to go in more than once to complete the entire round and I am not comfortable with giving them myself…plus I do know it tends to mess up their eating habits. But if it’s the only way to get rid of it eventually, we’ll do it.
So far the Trimeth seems to be taking some effect. It’s a 14 day regimen, so perhaps just the amount of time he takes the meds will knock out the bug. So far when she’s given me antibiotics, it hasn’t even lasted 7 days, so I think that may have caused the bug to become a little resistant.
