So the hubby has been out of town for a few days, doing hubby things. My son just left to go play some video games (he’s finished with his school stuff, so he needs a break) and I realize that Taiku is still in need of a good walk. As I’m about to leave, Shadow looks over the barrier and gives me ‘the ol’ puppy dog eyes”…grrrr. Okay, I don’t normally do this, but I hitch them both up and take them down the street. (You can see where this is going.)

I am 5’4″ and about 130. Between the two of them, I’ve got 200 lbs of dog on two retractable leashes. I am just asking for it.

Actually most of the walk goes really well. Then just as we’re turning to go into the driveway, the good Lord decided to poke a squirrel into running across the road about 100 feet from us. Guess who sees it…and takes off at a full gallop…about yanking my arm out of it’s socket and throwing me down on the gravel/dirt road on my left hand/right shoulder and chest? (I didn’t see the half dollar sized bruise on my right leg till I went to take a shower.)

Shadow is just standing there on his lead like, “What?! Oh no! Mom’s hurt!” He comes over to me, but Taiku is tearing down the street and doing his best to try and get over what’s left of our snow (it’s been 70-75 above for the last few days and everything is melting and muddy…yuck!) to get this poor squirrel…who is probably high up in a tree by now and laughing at all three of us.

I was fortunate enough to still have breath left to run down the road after dufus. Luckily I was able to grab his lead and drag his sorry butt back to the house. After a shower and a painkiller, I’m still hot about it.

The husband is going to lecture me when he gets home. I’ll get to hear about how stupid I am for trying to take both dogs at once and not letting Shadow go off the lead since HE can always get the dog to come to him when he calls…I am not that certain of Shadow’s loyalty and obedience (he won’t even cross the puddles when they get over his toes to come back down the driveway), and I had them both on lead just in case something like this happened. Unfortunately, Taiku caught me when I wasn’t looking. I had just enough time to screech at him to come back when I hit the dirt.

For now, I’m taking a box of cheddar bunnies and a cherry Pepsi with me and going to lie down. (ouch)

Darned dogs. Why can’t they be like bunnies?

And you were doing them a favour! Ouch – hope you get some sympathy from hubby at least. Good old Shadow for checking on you though!
((((healing vibes)))) Bunnies or Dogs? Well I have bruises all over my legs ffrom climbing over pens and a nice old scratch down my face courtesy of Jersey. I caught her mid air as she was sailing over said pen. She and my face kind of met. So bunnies or dogs? = trouble either way!

Hehe this is why I never use retractable leashes anymore LOL I had a similar ‘accident’ with a 175 lb Great Dane and a 230 lb Neapolitan Mastiff whose owners insisted I use retractable leashes they smacked me into a tree when one went on one side and the other one on the other side and decided to take off running. Now it is halti harnesses all the way for me.

At least one of your dogs made sure you were alright!
