› Forum › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Checking in! I’ve been MIA! Jester and Lily are doing great :)
Hello BB’ers!
I have been MIA! Some of you have probably been wondering how Lily and Jester are doing. They are doing great!! They are still not successfully bonded. We need to do more dates with them. They do, however, peacefully co-exist when they are out loose together. Jester still chases Lily. Just the other day, they were laying down just feet apart from each other- that’s a big step for them. They stay in separate pens that are side by side.
I had my first experience with a gassy bunny- we took Jester to the vet yesterday. He hadn’t eaten all day and was acting a little odd. He checked out fine but the xrays showed some slightly enlarged intestines. We are assuming it was gas, as we didn’t see any objects that were stuck. I guess it still could have been hair- they said it’s hard to see hair in an xray. They gave him subcutaneous fluids and some meds- meto(something) to get things passing through again. When we got home, we force fed him some mushed up pellets and water in a syringe. He ate all that we gave him without a fight and then on his own, was eating pellets, mountain grass, and drinking water. He’s also going potty like normal.
I need to learn the massage techniques for gassy bunnies. I gave him some simethicone drops last night when we got home. The vet had never heard of that before- she learned something new! I learned about the drops from BB!
The vet visit was a little pricey- but it was good to have all his teeth checked out, and the xrays to see what’s going on in his lil bod!
Here are a few recent pics of my babies.
Hope everyone and their buns are doing well!
Jester
Lily
awww, well its good to hear he’s ok, You have 2 very pretty (handsome and pretty) buns!!! Welcome back! =)
The vet didn’t know about simethicone? That doesn’t sound like a very well informed vet…I’m glad Jester is doing better though!
Its a good thing you taught the vet – now she’ll be able to help even more rabbit owners down the road! I love the photos – Lily looks a bit disapproving though, did you catch her right as she was waking up before she had time to groom her hair?
What great pics! I had just been thinking about you the other day b/c I saw your thread in the bonding section… lol!
I’m glad Jester is feeling better!
We had to take Jester back in tonight. He didn’t eat again all day- well, hardly made a dent in his food, which is not like him.
They gave him subcutaneous liquids again and sent us home with Metoclopramide.
He took the medicine well. He’s lounging in his bed right now. I am just laying down beside his pen watching him. If he doesn’t eat soon, we will have to force feed moist pellets through the syringe again.
I wish I knew what exactly was going on with him.
We are doing our best to take good care of him.
As I type this, I realize that this post better fits under a different forum topic, but what the heck
Thank you for the welcome back and for the comments on the pics. I will dig up more pics of them to post.
Hopefully Jester bounces back again. My poor little guy.
When we were at the emergency vet tonight, a couple came running in with a little toy poodle wrapped in a towel- it had been attacked by a coyote. It didn’t make it. What a bummer of a night this has been.
About Lily’s pic- she is so feisty! It even comes across in her pics! She is Miss Destructo with her pen. She yanks on the pen to be let out. Jester is sooooo cool and laid back- he keeps his pen clean, never bites on the sides of the pen to be let out. Funny how their personalities are expressed so well in their pictures. I sure do love my furry babies!
I was surprised too that the vet had never heard about the simethicone drops. I’m glad that she knows now and can recommend them in the future. There are 2 or 3 vets at the hospital we went to that specialize in rabbits. I feel good about the exam and the care that Jester’s gotten there so far. A man from the local bunny rescue sent us to this hospital too.
He still hasn’t eaten anything….time to start soaking pellets to put in the syringe I think.
I will keep you guys posted.
Jester just ate a good amount of mushed pellets through the syringe. He is so cooperative- even the animal hospital was amazed!
Here are a few more pics of them I found in my computer:
Ok, now it’s not working…I wonder what I am doing wrong to attach them.
I’m sorry to hear about Jester’s bout with gi stasis. I hope this gets resolved very quicky – sounds like you have vets you can trust so that is good. and the fact they are getting fluids in him is very important. Sending out healing vibes!
That’s strange the photos are not showing up – did you try and upload them from below the edit box or from the little icon in the toolbar?
Oh, poor Jester! With the metroclopramide which is a gut motility drug you won’t need to give the simethicone – some vets are skeptical whether simethicone really works but they all agree it’s doesn’t hurt. Sometimes it can take awhile to get their gut moving again too and even once they start eating you will probably want to continue the metroclopramide for a few more days.
Healing vibes to Jester and keep us updated.
Ask about pain meds too…
Darn, still can’t get those pics attached. I am doing it the same way I did the first ones. I upload them as attachments at the bottom and then I click on ‘insert image’ and nothing happens. It inserts a symbol of a broken paper or something like that, but displays no photos. Maybe they didn’t upload right- will have to try again from home. I am on from work right now, ssshhh! hehe
Jester is doing well today. He is so cooperative when we give his meds! He’s going potty like normal. He’s been eating pellets and mountain grass. I even gave him a few treats- at this point, I want him to eat all he can. I have cut out the veggies just for a few days, as maybe that’s what caused this? Or maybe a hair ball? This is the first time I’ve ever had to deal with this.
We will continue with the meto meds. The vet also recommended that even if he seems like he’s doing better, to continue giving it to him.
I did give him simethicone drops last night- I figured it couldn’t hurt. The vet looked on some exotic specialist website for vets and the recommended dose was 65-130mgl (3/4 teaspoon) per hour for 2-3 treatments. That seems like a lot- more than an infant gets and Jester is only 5.4 lbs! Does that sound right to you guys?
He is not lethargic at all. I caught him playing with a few of his toys this morning. He looks good too.
What usually causes gi stasis? Hair ball? Could it be the romaine I’ve been giving him? He’s had romaine before. Maybe it doesn’t agree with him anymore?
Hmmm….I sure *try* to be best bunny mommy that I can be!
Thanks for the support
Glad Jester is recovering well! I’m not sure about the dosages for simethicone since I don’t ever use this but if the vet recommends this then that’s what I would do.
There are a variety of causes for stasis – I’ve had rabbits in stasis for blockage, gas, dental – it’s just a variety. I never did figure out what caused Mango’s several severe bouts of stasis – the vet said his x-rays looked like gas – but who knows what causes gas is I guess normally something that is ingested that causes some kind of bacteria. Stasis can also be caused by stress. I think that if it happens again then you need to really start looking for a cause.
My rabbit Pepe had a blockage – it’s really not the same as a hairball – it’s called a tricobezear which is a mass of undigested stuff which could be fur but it could be other things – really it’s a gut motility problem and you have to get the gut moving again which is why you give them the gut motility drugs, sub-q fluids and pain meds – the same thing for major bouts of gas too – these 3 things which I call the gi stasis cocktail helped Mango as well.
It’s also true that a rabbit may be ill and still eat – things like urinary tract infections don’t always cause a rabbit to stop eating and other illnesses may not stop a rabbit eating either so it’s not always a matter of not eating when a rabbit is ill. Sometimes dental problems may cause a change in eating or just a change in behavior….which I guess a urinary infection will do as well as they may stop using their litter boxes.
Anyway, it sounds like Jester is on the right track to getting better and that’s important – you are a great bunny mom too.
Aww, thank you, Sarita.
The vet checked his teeth out and she said they looked good. I guess we won’t know exactly what caused the gi stasis- as you say, there are several possibilities.
I will keep a good eye on him and make sure to brush him daily, in cause the hair played a part in this.
What pain meds have you had good luck with? This way I will know what specific one to ask for
Jester’s tummy was making the loudest gurgling sounds last night! He had a lot going on inside I guess! hehe
He’s a trooper and luckily, now too a pooper! hehehe (Couldn’t resist!)
I have read too that bunnies, even if they feel terrible, will act like they are fine. They don’t want to appear weak and vulnerable to predators. Makes sense.
I will keep you guys posted on my Jester bun and also get the pics posted that I keep teasing you with. I got a new camera- yay
Many vets use metacam which is a liquid – this is basically an anti-inflammatory non-steroid pain med and many vets use this for rabbits.
Also I have used buprenex but this may decrease the appetite too since it’s an opiate but if the pain is severe enough then this is a good one. It truly depends too on the severity of the pain…and this can be used orally or as an injection.
I have also used banamine in the past. And at one time Rimadyl.
But honestly your vet will most likely have a pain medication that they prefer and you will want to discuss it with them as they will have their thoughts on each pain medication because there is a variety of choices.
Wow, good info, Sarita. Thank you!
Yes, I bet our vet’s office has certain ones that they like best.
I am going to make a note of all that you mentioned though.
Jester thanks you too!
I am anxious to get home and get the rest of my pictures posted.
I love the pics and am glad to hear he’s a “super pooper” (sing this to the tune of ABBA’s super duper).
Ha, you know what, skunklionshow…….after reading your post, I DID sing it to that tune. We could make a whole soundtrack of song titles that are bunny-fied! hehehe
Jester is doing well. He’s out running around right now
Let me try posting these pics again! It worked! Had to upload them again.
I think if my home was bugged…people would think I’m a nut! I’m always making up songs about my pets. Sometimes to new melodies, sometimes to existing tunes. …I’m such a looney tune. I love the bunny butt pic!
You and me both…..we have 3 cats and 2 buns and the way I talk to them all, someone would think I lost all my marbles. I talk to them and ask them questions. To this day, they still don’t verbally answer, why is that?! hehe I guess they speak in their own languages though. Gotta love ’em!
UHHHHHHH! I absolutely adore Lilly thanks for the pictures-she’s sooo beautiful!!! Not that Jester isn’t handsome, just really partial to dutch bunnies!!
I’m glad Jester’s on the mend! And looks like they can’t hate each other too much when they are laying so close to each other-great work!
Thanks KandK! Lily is sure a feisty lil girl, but I adore her!
Jester is super laid back…..they even each other out.
Their date this week went really well. They went for a car ride and then went into the bathtub. I was able to move Lily right up against him.
I think Lily might just be playing hard to get- that’s why it’s taking so long for them to fall in love! hehe
