› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Getting ready for our new adopties – Addie & Benjie
Well, I’ve met a few of you in a couple other threads (and skibunny8503 and her husband in person) and I got to say that you people are the best. Instead of adding on to your threads I figured I start a new one.
My wife and I wanted to adopt another bunny after losing our Trixie not too long ago.

I searched Petfinder and seen a bunch of sweeties at Judges Park, which is about 100 miles away. So we drove out there last Friday (4/24) and chose not one but two bunnies to adopt. Addie and Benjie. They aren’t bonded yet, but they are spayed and neutered. So the easy part is done. ![]()
Jen said Addie already had an appointment set up to have her staples removed, so she’s not bringing the bunnies until this Friday (5/1). Part of the adoption process is that we go to the rescue to adopt and then the rescue brings the bunnies to our home.
So, although it’s sad that we have to wait, atleast it gives us time to set up a bigger enclosure for the bunnies when we’re not home. You can kind of see the enclosure we had for Trixie in the picture above. Yes… I know it’s small. But she was RARILY left in it. She mainly only went in there to go potty and to eat (when she wasn’t on the couch eating off our plates). Other than that she had the run of the house.
So upon advice from skibunny, we went to Target to see it we could find the storage cubes. We did find these. There’s enough to make six cubes and it was only $16.99 a box. So we grabbed four boxes. Two blue and two black.

It wasn’t until we got home and opened the box that we noticed the grids used two different sized spacing. I wasn’t sure what to do at first. But I realized that I could use the wide grids for the floors and for the side which goes up against the wall, the the smaller grids for everywhere else.

So we got the enclosure assembled, minus the door. I use subflooring and cut out squares to use for the cage floor. When I assembled the wire floor, I positioned the panels with the thin wire facing down. That way the wood floor (it’s thin) sit right in the wire floor. I drilled holes in each wood piece so I could secure it to the wire with zip ties.

In one of the floors on the top level I added a piece of ceramic tile which was left over from when we recently retiled our entrance way. I know how bunnies like to lay on the cool tile when they’re warm, I thought I’d try this to see if they’d use it. I still have to lay some type of carpeting down and I’ll just cut it to leave the tile open.

So, the enclosure isn’t done yet, but this isn’t too bad for a days work. I still got to add support in the middle, finish the ramps, add carpet, build a house, and other little odds and ends. Using two boxes, we had enough panels to build this, I have four panels to make a door, and we’ll still have five panels left over after that. Of course… I have to add to the top level to keep any jump-happy bunnies from flying.

And of course… now that I’m sitting here typing this, it just dawned on me that Addie and Benjie are not bonded yet. Now I got to make another enclosure. ![]()
I’ll keep this thread updated.
That looks great! Addie and Benjie are lucky to be coming to live in you and your wife’s home. Can you somehow incorporate Trixies cage into the NIC condo to create a 2nd cage while they are kept separate? You never do know…if they are introduced to one another at the shelter this week, they might instantly bond. It has been known to happen. Only hiccup is Addies recovery period.
Well, keep us posted on how things are going. Skibunnies hubby rebuilt their condo about 4 times I think!
You have done a really great job. It looks fantastic. I’m sure they will love it.

That’s what I was thinking I may try and I’ll just use some more of the grids to add on to it. Which would be better while we’re trying to bond them… having the two enclosure near each other in the same room, or having the enclosures in separate rooms?
Trixie was beautiful.
The cages look great. I’m sure your new rabbits will be very happy. Can’t wait to hear all about them once you meet them.
Don’t worry about having to redo the pen – because it will not be the last time!
I have redone mine about 4 times in the last year.
Can’t wait to hear about their homecoming!
When building our condo we had 6 bunnies – one set of 4 that was bonded and one set of 2 that was bonded. We really, really wanted to try and bond all 6 of them together so when I built the condo I basically made one big one with a divider wall between the 2 halves. The plan was that it would allow them to get used to being close to each other, and after they were bonded the middle wall could be removed. Well they never did bond, Keelie is just very particular about who she likes (almost no one) and who she doesn’t.
You may find that you don’t need the ramps there. When I made our first little wooden bunny condo (now part of the big wire condo) I put a ramp in there, but they seem happier just jumping from level to level.
Anyway, in case you’re interested this is our setup:

Pre bonding it is good to have them side by side so they become familiar with one another. If they are both coming from a shelter rather than a foster home, then they’re most likely used to being in side by side cages. In that case, they feel more at home too.
Yes, thanks for the picture. I’m sure we will be rebuilding it more than once. I wanted it bigger than this to start with, but I had to leave it like that because of it being near a air vent (can see it between the cage and dog dishes). We have a 90 gallon saltwater reef tank that I’m now selling just so we can use that space for the bunnies. We don’t have to sell it… we want to sell it.
You know… because a bunny enclosure will look soo much better than a reef tank.
But seriously, we do want them to be as comfortable as possible.
Addie and Benjie are not bonded yet. Now I got to make another enclosure.
Ohh nooo!! After all that work! Well now you have the experience! You did a great job
I lke the divider idea-that may work for you to quickly adapt it for two bunnies ![]()
That looks great! Yes, NIC condos are a lot of work and you never seem to get them “just right”, there are always improvements to be made. (I personally use xpens… I love them!)
I love it! One of mine has 4 levels and they prefer to jump up and down too. I like the NIC condos because I can interact with the bunnies on a higher level and face to face if they choose. I love the look of the x-pens but with my bad knees I very seldom get down on the floor and it’s easier for me to clean.
That looks great! I love the flooring. Doh, I forgot about the different cubes for Target!
We have mostly the gray cubes from BB&B but the blue ones we used for a fence. Archie & Gracie can get their heads through a bit but Parsnip actually put her little body all the way through haha! You can also probably use the bigger ones for a roof too.
Yes def. keep their cages next to each other, just don’t keep them to close in case they try to nip each other from the grids. Depends on the rabbit, I know mine liked ramps more than jumping up. Archie likes jumping but Gracie’s bigger so jumping is a little harder to do. Benji’s pretty big, so he might be better with ramps, but you never know.
I keep an eye on Jen’s status on facebook. So far nothing about a sucessful bond yet but hopefully they’ll be bonded by Friday *fingers cross*
TODAY’S THE DAY!!! ![]()

Alright… let’s see where I left off. I did end up with a buyer for my saltwater tank and he picked it up Wednesday, so that gave us more room for their enclosure. AND of course, when I go to move it we realize it’s just barely too big to fit through the door frame.
So I ended up tearing it all down.
So now they have a new setup. Jen from Judges Park brought Benjie and Addie on Friday. We put them in the enclosure and Benjie went straight in to hiding. Addie started going to town on the food. From what I understand, Addie was just given up because her owners didn’t want her. She’s under a year old. Benjie is around two years old. Someone had just thrown him outside to fend for himself.
“That long trip made me thursty.”

“Pose for the camera… it ain’t happening!”

” Alright then, I’ll come out for pictures.”

“Good… while their eye’s are on Addie, I’m gonna slowly sneak off and hide elsewhere.”

“CHEEEEZZZZZEEE”

“That’s it… keep your eye’s on Addie… OHHH, BUSTED!”

Aw they’re so cute! Love the cage setup from the pics, you’ll have to post more! Did she manage to get them bonded yet?
Can’t wait to see more pics of them ![]()
what a beautiful pair…
that bunny puddle in your first post that must have been your first one there. Looks like a giant comfy bunny puddle… she is so cute.
SO DARN CUTE!! I am sooooooo happy for you and your wife!! Believe me the remodeling phase is never over! You will dream of zip ties and cubes forever! Muhahahaha! What an awesome bunny family you have! ![]()
Beautiful pair! Worth all the reconstruction efforts, right? Addie looks so much like Rabbitpams Sammykins!! Love Benji’s colour and square little face. Congratulations on getting them home at last. Look forward to hearing more about them.
btw, when bunnytowne refers to “Bunny puddle” I think she’s meaning Trixie’s pose in the pictuce (bunny puddle or pancake) not the other kind of puddle
lol
Some people find it strange that a rabbit that has been with people for a couple of years tend to be more aggressive or scared/shy of other people. This isn’t always due to mistreatment. The rabbit knows her people and when dropped off at a shelter, they are expecting them to come back for them so they get defensive as if to say, “My people will be right back, so stay away!” That’s what breaks my heart at the shelters – not the living conditions but that some buns think that their family will be back for them.
They are gorgeous. Congratulations!
