        My car was totaled today.

Sitting securely in its own driveway.

        Yup.

Some drunk chick decided that it would be a good idea to take a swerve into my driveway and play bumper cars with two parked vehicles and a trashcan.

So it was about 2:15-ish am, everybody was in bed except me naturally. I’m sitting on my computer when I hear this loud

        BAM BA-BAM!’

I think to myself “Huh…that kind of sounded like an explosion..” and ALMOST dismiss it. (We live in a high-traffic, high-DUI rate area, so it isn’t uncommon for a person to run into a telephone pole and blow out a converter box.) But my curiosity gets the better of me and I make my way to the front window just to check..

..and, lo. There is my car. Sitting angled in the middle of the yard, the car parked on the lawn perpendicularly to it pushed neatly forward about five feet into a utility box. A pair of headlights speeds off down the dead-end couldasack.

        Okay.

So let me put this intp context for you..

Previous to the accident, my car was straightly parked in the driveway behind my mom’s car. Our friend who is staying with us had her car parked at the edge of our lawn (but markedly in our lawn) parallel to the street. There was a trashcan at the edge of the driveway.

That silver thing, way the frick across the yard?

        Is my bumper.

        Alas, poor trash can..

        But damn.

Seriously, that’s ridiculous. This woman had to be FLYING in order to do that. And the entrance to our street isn’t even that far from our house.

They caught the culprit. She readilly admitted to it. She was drunk. Charged with DUI and fleeing the scene of an accident.

        Actually… she…(lol)…

Left a trail of leaking transmition fluid bread crumbs.

        xD;!

But anyway. I can’t afford full coverage on my vehicle, only PIP and liability. So she better DAMN well not turn out to have expired insurance or something. Else I’ll have to take her to court.

And all this the same week as finals. Damn..

My poor car.  T-T My poor baby.

OMFG. That’s insane! I love the trail of transmission fluid and that they caught her though. Might be worth trying to take her to court to recoup other costs though, like the trash can, lawn damage, time lost from work having to deal with car etc.

Oh wow! I’m so sorry you had to deal with this! What a pain in the butt! Hope everything is fixed quickly! At least they caught the girl. I’m glad nobody was hurt, too.

Well if you’re going to total your car, that’s the way to do it – when you’re no way near it. What a pain!!!!

This is why I’m glad I ‘own’ my own house at the end of a long driveway in the middle of nowhere. Not that we don’t have drunks all around us, but they’d have to go pretty far to hit our vehicles or anything else of ours…not that I’d put it past them to try. >.<

Jeez, Sarah, sorry to hear this has happened. Thank God you weren’t in the car at the time! I sure hope the insurance comes through for you!

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Unfortunately the police officer forgot to give us the offending driver’s insurance information and has been purposefully avoiding our pleas for him to call us all day. So we’re stuck. Can’t do ANYTHING until we get that information. Not a thing. So my car is still sitting out there just like that and I have yet to even get a rental car. 😐

We’re really, really pissed with the officer. Honestly. It would take him all of five minutes to pull up her insurance info for us.

Any chance the officer doesn’t work today so isn’t in to return the call?

First off…I truely thought you were gonna say that leaking was her peeing when she left the scene! Honest! I really expected you to say that! Wow, I so need to go to bed!!! LOL

Binkles- no matter what your coverage is you need to call YOUR insurance and tell them you need to report a claim and tell them as much as you know and what police dept took the info and they will go after the police dept for the info. Saves you the time and effort. Then they will deal w/ getting the insurance info from the police and contact the offenders insurance company and you wont need to do anything. They should do it.

In my past life I was an insurance agent. Sometimes I come in handy. Dont sit and waste your time. You pay your insurance for stuff like this!!!!

Well he only went into work at 6pm today, but we had already called him and left messages the previous night (aka morning) right after the accident, after which he was on duty for two more hours. Anyway, it’s after midnight now, and I’m pretty certain that he’s avoiding us..

Edit: I did call my insurance agency about an hour after the accident and gave them all the information I could. Unfortunately they can’t do a damn thing because I don’t have full coverage, just PIP and liability. They still want a copy of the police report when it comes out just to clear my name, but I’m the one who has the task of going tooth-and-nail at her insurance company.

oh how frustrating!  has the officer returned your calls yet?  have you tried to reach his boss?  if no, i recommend it.  i deal with lackadaisical city employees on a  regular basis and have had success with persistantly trying to reach supervisors / bosses with the same request when some one is too slow returning my call.  if that doesn’t work call the boss’ boss.  you always have to be sweet as pie (even though you’re steamin’ mad).  and the best way to get what you need is to not accept voice mails…  always hit ‘0’ to speak to a receptionist if you get vmail and inquire about the persons availability.  if they’re not in ask when they will be in… when the meeting will be over… who can you speak to in their absence.  if they’re in but not available say you prefer to hold instead of voice mail and ask if there is a best time of day to reach them.  get the names of all the people you speak to.  its better to say “peter in reception directed me to you”  or “yesterday when i spoke with jackie they recommended…”  good luck!
