Up until her biospy surgery Inkblot always drank water from her fairly large water bottle.  It is one of those that is suspended on the outside of the cage and has the ball bearing in the metal spout.  Right after she had her biopsy I started putting a water bowl in her cage because I read that some rabbits may not drink water after surgery if they have to work for it.  I always leave the bottle with clean water on the cage.  She has not drank from this bottle since she had a bowl.  Do you think if I removed the bowl she would go back to using the bottle?  I’m worried that she’ll just continue to ignore the bottle and be thirsty.  The bottle holds a lot more water so she never runs out.

I don’t mind leaving the bowl in the cage but it is just one more thing in her way.  And she likes to dump hay everywhere and she manages to toss it in the water bowl.  It seems like once she has “contaminated” the water in the bowl she won’t drink any of it until I change it and in the mean time she wouldn’t drink from the bottle either.  I also tried moving the water bowl farther away from where most of the hay is but she won’t have it.  She’ll move it back because half the cage is for sleeping and the other half is for food and water .  I guess it is possible that she wasn’t that thirsty.

All four of my bunnies prefer the bowl to the bottle. If she likes the bowl better I’d let her have it. Does she have a shelf in her cage? Maybe you could put her water bowl up a little higher so it doesn’t get so much hay in it.

All my rabbits prefer a bowl as well – I think it’s more natural. You can try to find a bowl that attaches to the side of the cage. I say give her what she wants too.

I noticed that Sarita said this, but there are several different types of bowls you can buy that attach to the sides of the cage, actually the cage that Oreo is in (XX-Large Dog kennel–wire) had a bowl that attached to the side of it, Oreo uses the bottles really well, so I never put it in there, but I would try that, maybe you could fix it up so its not in the way of her “hay decor” =)

These are the ones I like:

                http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm

Probably want a 20 oz I would think but I’m not sure what size the one I have is – I know the 5oz is way TOO SMALL – they won’t even be able to get their face in that one.

They have other kinds but this has worked the best for me and it’s very sturdy and easy to screw and unscrew to refill with water.  Don’t screw it too tight though – I don’t screw mine all the way and it’s just fine.  I’ve screwed them too tight in the past and well…it was a problem.

Hi Miyuki – I really don’t have anything to add, but was just wondering how Inkblot is doing??

I’m glad I found this thread! I just got my first bunny and he likes a bowl better than the bottle… I will get him one of those bowls that attach to the side of his cage, he’ll probably like that! Thanks for the link Sarita!

I hope Inkblot is doing better!

Hello everyone! She used to have a shelf in her cage but I’ve taken it out for her safety. It didn’t have one of those holes for the water bowls though. So knowing her she’d think it was fun to push it off. I like that clear bowl Sarita posted. I’ll stop by my pet store on the way home and see what they have. So far I remember only seeing these: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=6067+10382+7701&pcatid=7701

I didn’t really like that one because if I wanted to the bowl to be kind of low it would hook between the cage wire and the plastic bottom since the attachment is on the bottom of the bowl.

And Inkblot is doing fine for now! A lot more of her fur has come back. And she’s helping me keep her eye clean. She’s still acting normal although the tumor has grown a little more. I can hear her dumping the hay right about now… time to go make sure the water bowl has no hay in it .

Ugh could not find anything but the those locking crocks that I didn’t want .  I’ll have to shop around online I suppose.  Hopefully the Petco that is currently being built will have more small animal things I can choose from!  I ended up buying this in the interim:

                        http://www.superpetusa.com/catalog/…mber=61814

It is way bigger than the temporary bowl she was using and I don’t think she can throw/tip this one over or get her bunny butt in it.  I’m planning to move it around a little bit and use the dome part to try to “deflect” some of the hay

I may have to do something similar to this, as I tried the “Water Buddy” that is advertised by Dr.s F&S and none of my bunnies seem to understand how to use it, despite many times encouraging them to drink from it by smearing banana on the spigot. >.<

With all the water Mimzy drinks though, I’m going to be up all night refilling the bowl! lolz!

And I’m glad to hear Inkblot is doing so well. ^_^

Wow I couldn’t figure out how the Water Buddy worked lol.  Once I clicked other views I saw the spigot.  I had a water bottle (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm) that had a similar type of spout.  Inkblot wouldn’t even touch it!  At that point I just went back and got her one of those ball bearing ones and she was drinking water again.
