› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Do you ever wonder about your buns’ siblings..?
I do….especially Little-Bit’s. She was so tiny and malnourished..
Just to think that there are probably at least two or three other bunnies out there somewhere who share my baby’s blood. And I just can’t help but to wonder about them, how they are doing if they are alive, where they are. If they were as lucky as thier sister.. ![]()
I have. I’ve always wondered what Bamber thinks about them, what sorta position he had in the family (like if he was the alpha male, or the sweet one, or whatever), if they had uppity or lop ears (Bamber’s a lop mix), if they are all in loving homes, and I wonder what happened to his mom and dad.
The most likely answer to some of those questions makes me really sad :[
I have. Jersey was amongst large cashmere lops and g/pigs in the pet store. I had wondered if her siblings had been there and what they were like. She seemed super spritely to me so I thought they must have been similar. A rang the store sometime after and enquired where they got their rabbits from. They were a bit closed mouthed….backyard breeders most likely.
I found this guy (Kizzy) on a rescue page four months after I got Jersey.

He was found in the region where I live and I was convinced he was her brother.
I’m certain she’s part lop.
I adopted Rumball from a family but they did tell me the breeders name and parents names from where they got him. I was able to speak to the breeder and get some family history – mainly about his parent’s and Grands. I suspect he was the only agouti in his litter as the breeder mentioned this Doe “throwing agoutis occasionally”. Likely he has many siblings since he was from a breeding pair.
I remember you rescued Lil Bit from a very young age. What is the complete story there? (if you don’t mind saying…)
I guess I’ve never really thought of it. All of mine have either been strays or from shelters so I’ve never even thought about siblings. I do wonder if my female pair are related though and my Dutches, I wonder if it’s a mother/son since Peppermint was so young when I got him and they were together as strays.
I’m afraid to know about what demise my rabbit’s siblings could have had – I would want to think positive but I know that’s not realistic. When I think about how I came to get my rabbits I guess I think it would be too sad to know.
Well, I know two of Max’s siblings (Gracie and Boston… LOL!) But I guess I never did give it much thought. If I were going to adopt (assuming I had no bunnies) and saw a couple siblings at the rescue, I think I might be more tempted to adopt both. There was another member (forgive me, I don’t remember her name off the top of my head) who adopted a brother-sister pair. Upon realizing the other sister was still at the rescue, she went back and adopted her too.
Meadow was either born to a mother abandoned at a shelter, or was born before being abandoned (mother with babies). I got her at 4 months, and the people doing the adoption were not positive of the situation. I didn’t press for more details at the time. So it’s likely she had brothers or sisters, but I know there weren’t any there when I got her. I am hopeful that they all went to great homes.
I posted the link to that NW Ohio trio the other day… it looks like the 2 french lops are siblings… they’re identical.
Regardless, I hope all of our buns siblings had good outcomes.
Actually I do alot!
Kokanee was in the petstore with her brother. They were both so active, that when I owned Kokanee I thought how terrible it would have been if she’d been purchased by a kid and left in a cage.
She really needed her time out to do things-she was busy all day and all night that one. Moose from my shelter was purchased in a petstore, and his temperament, coloring and breed (breed definitely since there are only two who breed dutch in this area) lead me to think he may be a sibling to Kokanee. Both have coloring that’s ‘off’ for showing and that may be why they eneded up in a petshop.
Kahlua was available from the breeder because her coloring-chestnut-is very dominant and not good in a breeding program. Her mom kept having one baby litters so she was retired. Kahlua had no surviving siblings from her litter but a few from past litters. The breeder is a responsible breeder but I can’t help but think how lucky she was to be born with that coloring and offered for purchase rather then to spend her life breeding…
I’ve always wondered about Rupert’s previous life rather then siblings-his coloring isn’t good for a Harly and I wonder if he too was sent to a petshop and then purchased by someone neglectful-or if he was set free on purpose?
I purchased Binkles from a pet shop, and she had about five or six little siblings there with her. I LIKE to think that her particular breeder was responsible, since they were only ever weened at 8 weeks and no less. Binkles was the only agouti in her litter too. :p
Little-Bit’s story is really sketchy. A teacher at school purchased her from a pet store for a friend of mine who’s bunny had passed away the day before. We both knew that she wasn’t ready for another bunny yet, and furthermore she could only keep outdoor rabbits at the time. It was mid-winter and FREEZING; not the kind of weather to be leaving a tiny resource-less baby bunny out in. So my friend decided to relinquish her to me. When I got there and saw how tiny she was, I was horrified. And terribly malnourished. Could feel every last little bone in her body.
I was even more horrified to notice the next day that she had a bad case of nystagmus. To see those precious confused little eyes rolling in that tiny skull and that little head moving side to side uncontrollably…it was heartbreaking. Rushed her to the vet and found out she had a terrible case of yeast infection in her middle/ inner ear -in BOTH ears, but more so in her left one- complete with that disgusting green pus. 4-5 weeks of baytril (mixed with applesauce) and she was completely cured. She’s never had problems since.
I am just beyond theory as to how such a tiny baby could have possibly come by such malnutrition and illness that early on…it horrifies me.
We -think- that her litter might have been an accidental litter which in turn was sent to the pet shop. Because we’ll be damned if we know what breed she is. I swear she has so many inconsistencies with ALL breeds…she’s obviously part lionhead, and clearly only half if not less. Her tail is really, REALLY long, not just with fur -the bone goes all the way to the tip. Her head is…’differently’ shaped, I don’t know how else to describe it. And the bases of her ears are set -SO- far apart. Like, farther apart than ANY non-lop bunny I’ve ever felt. I thought at first that she would surely turn out to be a lop since they were so far apart, and even now if you push her ears down it looks natural because of that. But she’s definitely not a lop, and unlike most lops her ears are really really thick.
Her ears were also really really weird and wavy on the edges when she was a baby, as if they were trying to figure out how to form themselves. It almost looked like they were being eaten away by some parasite or if they were old healed battle wounds actually, but there was never any crust bleeding or holes or discomfort or anything in them, she never itched them or anything after her infection had cleared. Still today though, one of her ears looks slightly cropped at the tip. It’s just really interesting. Never seen anything like it.
Anyway, I am astounded that she has grown up to be as big and healthy as she is, having been weened so early. I’m really thankful.
..but I can’t help wonder about her siblings..

And this is about a week or so after we got her. Keep in mind, most of that is fur. NO bulk. There’s a good couple of centimeters of fur evenly on her. And my hand is in front of her a bit.
Yes I do! I got Hammer from a flee market out of a big wire cage. So he was in there with at least 15 of his family members, 6 were from his litter I think. I felt awful choosing just one, because I knew that the one I would get would have a good life and the rest probably wont have such happy endings, esp at only $5 a bun. I had originally picked Hammers sister, but when I held her Hammer just stared at me he seemed so scared. His sister didnt seem to even notice me or that I was holding her so it ended up with Hammer. But I do still wonder what happened to the rest of them, esp his sister.
I do wonder about Oreo’s family, of course I know that Oreo is a daddy to at LEAST 2 litters. (sad) Most often though I think about what would have happened to him had I not gotten on Craigslist that day and happened to click on her ad. Oreo was to be “released” or killed that day, by her boyfriend. **CRIES!!** Its so horrible the things that happen to animals. People treat them as property instead of family! All of my animals are special to me, even my fish!!!! I could never purposely hurt an animal,(except for spiders.. and other bugs! YUCK!) I don’t see how anyone could do the things they do. 1 of my dogs is an American Pit Bull Terrier, he wouldn’t fight so they were planning on using him as a bait dog, I paid the KID $350.00 cash for him, took him, and then called the cops when I left. both of my kitties are “death row” kitties. My boxer came from a BY breeder, she has a horrible gene pool, but SO WHAT! She’s the best darn watch dog ever!!! All of my animals are rescues in some form or fashion. I wouldn’t have it any other way to be honest!! I think about all of them, their sibblings, parents, and in Oreo’s case, his poor kiddos! Its a sad, sad fact that I’m sure not all of them are living at this point. Honestly I wonder if he thinks about his past life or not?
I see Maryann’s ‘extended family’ whenever I go to the Alameda Naval base and see all the ferals running around there. But she ran away from them so I figure they’re a bad gang to run with.
Actually, I don’t. I kind of think they are all dead ![]()
Pepper was found in a park and it’s assumed she was an impulse purchase for Easter and then dumped. I can’t imagine that the others ended up much differently. Pepper is around 4 now
I don’t as my bunnies siblings are all together and living with me. 🙂
Pudge- I got him from a pet shop, he was my first bunny. He was with about 5 other baby bunnies so I’m assuming those were his sibs (even though none were his “golden” color). The pet shop was in a small deserted mall… I can’t imagine any of Pudge’s sibs went to good homes.
Delilah- I’m guessing she started out with inexperienced owners, and they must have bought 2 rabbits. Soon they probably multiplied into 17 rabbits, and I guess Delilah was one of the babies. I’m not sure. But the owners went away for a week and didn’t leave enough food or water for all 17 of them. Then the OSPCA rescued them, but the majority of her sibs had to be put down due to poor health
Polo- Oh I wish I knew how she started out. She’s half dog I swear. I got Polo off kijiji (for free) because the owner didn’t have time for her anymore. But even they didn’t want a rabbit in the first place, they found her on their relatives lawn. I always think she was a abandoned breeder rabbit cuz she came with one of those horrible tiny wire cages. I’m so curious of her siblings and where they are…dead? alive? in my city? out of my city? in the wild? at a backyard breeders?
Babybun- Got Baby Bun from a pet shop on the “run down” side of town. He was with another bunny who HAD to be his sib! The other bunny looked IDENTICAL except a bit bigger. There was also another sibling who looked like Baby bun, but was housed in another aquarium. Babybun snuggled with other small dwarf looking bunnies so I think those are his sibs too. Same with Binkles, I like to think Babybun came from a good breeder, but who am I kidding? I guess I would consider a good breeder someone who places there litters into loving homes but selling your rabbits as “stock” to a petstore where you don’t know where they’ll end up… wouldn’t be considered a “good breeder” in my mind. I wish I could go back and buy all Babybun’s siblings…children were always in that pet shop poking and grabbing at the fragile little bunnies.
Babybun was SO small, I bet he was 3-4 weeks when I got him except he is still VERY tiny, so I’m thinking the runt of a dwarf litter..?
I absoloutly love califronian buns so I was tempted by the one at the shop but I’m pretty sure they get around 6-12 pounds (besides, as soon as I saw Baby bun I was like OMG…*drools*) ![]()
Oh my Little bit is adorable! Binkles, is that first pic Little bit? She looks so much lighter as a baby and in your av? I wonder if Baby bun will turn out that way, they look as if they have the same coloring/markings…

Charlie was from a pet store and was in with guinea pigs so I don’t know about siblings. He was really young though (6-7weeks) so I really don’t know about siblings because the pet store said he came in alone. I imagine that if he did have siblings they would be dead by now too cause he was an easter bunny really (April).
Layla went into the shelter with her mum but her mum was put down because she was ‘unsuitable for re-adoption’ what ever that means… I felt so bad for Layla because she was suddenly all alone after living with her mum all her short life. That’s probably why she wanted to bond with Charlie so much.
I think about any siblings Mimzy would’ve had all the time.
The daughter likes to ponder the possibilities of the kits he and Pip would’ve had together.
Mimz was abandoned with two REW males. I think he thought they were his brothers. Hence why I always feel so bad that I couldn’t find a home for the last one who wound up disappearing. I would’ve probably begged to bring him home as well.
Right now I’d just suffice in getting Mimzy, Pip and Fiver bonded together. I think they could all benefit from having each other to snuggle with, but the boys will probably be impossible to bond.
And I don’t want to have Pip be happier with Fiver than she is with Mimzy…so….
*sigh* I would love to have had one more just like Mimzy. He’s just a little brown lop eared bunny, but he’s my whole life right now. He would look so cute (and I think be happier and healthier) if he just had a little mate, or a bro or sis, who looked just like him.
