As you know, I own a Dutch rabbit named Domino. It has been very hot and he hasn’t drinken ANY  water unless it’s on vegetables. I gave him cucumbers earlier and that helped ease my worry but I’m still afraid something may be wrong. I can’t afford to take him to the vet!

If he’s eating thing like that, this is good. Continue to get him wet veggies and things that hold alot of water like celery. If you are able to handle him easily, you can syringe feed water, or pedilyte if you are concerned about dehydration. If Domino is housed outdoors, see if you can place him somewhere cooler, like a laundry. If you cannot, provide frozen water bottles for him to lie against.

You see, celery actually doesn’t settle well with my bunny and not that many vegetables do. I also don’t know how to syringe feed ANYTHING! I’m just worried that he’ll get heat stroke. With the water bottles, he beleives that you should chew on them, not lie next to them! So when the bottle is melted, it leaks everywhere! I suppose I could continue to give him plenty of vegetable and I’m currently making some fresh squezed orange and apple juice for ice cubes for him.

Pull up the skin of the scruff of his neck (called tenting) if it settles again quickly- that is a sign of adequate dehydration.  If it slows moves back into place that shows severe dehydration and he needs to be seen by a vet.  If you can look at his gums- check to see if they are normal pink and moist or if they are pale.

This is an emergency and we can’t provide for you the care that he needs from the vet. They can get fluids in him via an IV.
I am so sorry, but I know with the emergency vet near us they let us make payments, you should call the vet and let them know you will have to make payments and hopefully they will let you.  But you have to take him to the vet at this point.

If you have an air-conditioned car, you can try keep him cool for the moment, but if his gums are pale it means he is going into shock, and if he’s already too dehydrated, YOU HAVE TO GET VET CARE otherwise his life is at risk. I’m so sorry. I know that is not what you want to hear.

Once the vets get him back to normal, here are some tips to help keep him cool.

I know it’s been REALLY hot in LA, and it’s been abnormally hot here too. It rarely gets into the 90’s like it has these last couple of days, so we don’t have air-conditioning, (except for this mini- window air-conditioner in the bedroom) but I keep a temp gage right where my bunnies are, and most of the cooling tips I follow especially the wet sheet with fan, ice water bottles, cool surface etc, and it has kept the temp at their level no higher than 78.

Is your bunny still doing ok?

Is there any way you can begin to set aside $ into a bunny emergency vet fund in case you ever need it? Rabbits are extremely expensive animals to have and you have to be able to get them to the vet asap when something like this happens. The next horrible thing could be GI issues that could cost thousands…

BB has some great advise above. Find a vet, get established and set up payment plans. You need to have a good relationship with a vet and they will be more likely to make exceptions w/ the bills than if they dont know you.

                          one word…WHEW!!!!

I agree with hedi – a bunny emergency fund is a great idea. You never want to be in this situation again where you can’t afford to bring your bunny to the vet. Scary!

Also, check out VPI vet insurance, and have a credit card for emergencies. This way you pay for the vet visit, enter the claim, and then at least you will get some reinbursed then (70%) from the insurance, and pay the credit card. I’m glad to hear Domino is doing okay now! That is very scary! I have a question… I think you mentioned awhile ago, but I’m not sure if this is still the situation… is Domino housed outdoors? I thought you said he was? If that’s the case, I strongly urge you to bring him indoors. It’s not even May yet and with such high temps, I’m guessing it is only going to get worse.
