Hi everybunny! I have to take Happi to the vet, she has been sneezing something awful! She has a bald nose from all the rubbing! As some of you may remember, she surprised me with 9 babies, 2 weeks after bringing her home! The babies are 4 weeks old now and doing wonderful! Happi is an excellent mommy! ( new pics of babies posted in the lounge) This is a new vet, and I’m very nervous. Happi is skittish about being picked up and handled and she is still nursing. What if she needs medication? What is safe for mom and babies, surely they will get it through her milk? She is so uncomfortable w/ this sneezing, I feel so bad for her! Please help me w/ questions to ask the vet, to test him and does anyone know about safe meds for nursing mothers? Thanks for all your help!

I would let the vet know about her still nursing and ask him about the medication – I would imagine he should know this and this will help him decide about the medications to give her.

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you Sarita! I’m nervous about the new vet, I don’t know him or how rabbit savvy he is. On the other hand I think I’m more nervous about how skittish Happi is. It’s one thing for her trusted human to pick her up, but another thing for a strange man in a strange place to do it. She scares me how scared she is to be picked up and examined. I will take her for her own good, hopefully it will be a good expierence for her, so when she goes to be spayed she will be a little more comfortable with it. Doubt it, but have to stay positive!  right?

I hope it’s a good experience as well – well, as good as it can be to go to the vet :~) I think it’s important you feel she is in good hands.

I think she will be OK. Vets and vet techs are usually very familiar with handling animals, even the more skittish and scared ones, and I think that they should be able to do a good job. None of my bunnies really like the vet all that much, and will give me the bum for awhile after we get home – but we are doing the best thing for them.

I hope Happi feels better soon!

Back from the vet….don’t know what to think. The vet was a nice lady, she really liked Happi, thought she was very pretty.  Happi weighs 9.4lbs!

She had to pull Happi out of the kennel, I got to hold Happi’s butt while she felt all around Happi’s cheeks, looked into her eyes and nose, then got Happi to open wide to see her teeth!! Happi was so good!! She said teeth are good and nothing painful in the cheek area. YAY! She prescribed a antibiotic, said it was fine that she is still nursing.  As soon as we put Happi back in her kennel, she started to chow down on the parsley that I put in there. lol  If she doesn’t improve she’ll try a different antibiotic. I asked about doing a culture, she said yes but we’ll have to sedate her for that. I don’t see why, don’t they just swab the nose?    So I got home and decided to give the first dose right away, gave Happi a couple of minutes to unwind and massaged her ears. I got all of it in her, nothing wasted! So what is your opinion of our visit?

Yes, she may have to sedate to get a good sample that is not contaminated – she will need to go further down the nostrils for that than is why just swabbing the nose won’t work. Obviously you won’t want to sedate her while she’s nursing.

What is the name of the antibiotic she gave you?

OK, that makes sense about the culture sample then.  The antibiotic is liquid suspension and it says SMZ-TMP  2ml twice daily.  I should have asked what it meant.  Happi is the same, I’m giving her second dose now, wish me luck!

I’ve used that – it’s Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim) and it’s safe so don’t worry about that – I’ve used it many times for may rabbits. My vet said it’s less likely to cause them to stop eating than baytril – that’s obviously not true for all rabbits but I guess the majority – so do watch for any side effects. And that’s not to say baytril will always have that side effect – it’s also a very safe effective drugs for most rabbits.

Happi is doing better I think! She is not sneezing as much and seems more relaxed when she is resting.  So far her appetite is good, loves her fresh greens the best! She doesn’t like to share her fresh stuff with the babies but she does, then when I let her out for some r and r  I give her some more just for her! She is one “happi” bunny!
