No, it has nothing to do with the temporary set up! Everytime I come here it reminds me how much I want my own bunny. I got my rat fix, because I take care of two 2-3 days a week for probably another year, but I haven’t held or cuddled a bunny since last March/April time. I want to many animals, lol!! Rabbits, rats, and ferrets are my favorite animals, but I know I can’t have all of them at the same time (well I can afford it and have the time, but my mum would never let me while I’m living here). I was going to start volunteering at a bunny shelter, but apparently I’m too young. The other rescues are too far away. So until I can find a bunny rabbit to pet sit to prove to my mom bunnies aren’t stinky, I’m not gonna be able to have one until I go to college. It’s easter, too, so there are going to be a ton available for adoption!! I just moved into a bigger room and have a whole closet that is basically empty! It would be perfect for a bunny!! I have an elderly ferret who only has a few months to a couple years left (), but when he does pass I’m gonna jump on the chance of getting a bunny. Maybe just fostering for a while!! My mom thinks I would want to keep any pet I fostered, but I wouldn’t unless I was looking to adopt it! So I’d have to make an outrageous deal like if I beg to keep the rabbit she can give away my ferrets since that would show her how serious I am (don’t worry I would NEVER, EVER give my ferrets away for another pet). If you sorta understand that, lol! Basically since my mum knows I would never do anything to endanger my ferrets, she knows I wouldn’t beg to keep the foster unless she let me. So hopefully that will work in the future!! Anyways sorry I had to rant to someone and I don’t blame you if you didn’t read all of it :-P!

I get it It’s awful wanting something -especially a pet-and not being able to have it. Especially when you know the only obstacle is your parent’s will!! I know how you feel.
Perhaps you can foster for a shelter-that’d give you time to show your mom you can care for the bunny and they don’t stink (Seriously ferrets have more smell-they eat meat!!) and that’d give you a bunny fix too? *hugs* hang in there you’ll get a bunny some day!

Ok, I’m going to be a total busy body here and direct you to this thread. I just posted about it to TARM but saw in her thread in the lounge that you hail from VA also.

Of course, if you do want to contact this member about fostering, make sure you check in with your Mum first – just to keep things sweet

Thanks guys ! The problem is getting my mom to let me foster a bunny. First I’m thinking I’m going to have to pet sit a rabbit that’s actually been taken care of and then move on to fostering. Around here that seems pretty hard!! Maybe I can still a bunny or two from TARM for a few days, lol!
Jersey, Thank you for that link!! It looks like she posted back in Jan.? I’ll see if I can get a hold of her and talk to my mum about it!
              Thanks again guys *hugs*!

My adivce to you would be to not get another non-bunny pet. If your ferret passes away, don’t rush out and get another ferret. If another pet passes away, don’t replace it with another animal. You may end up not having any pets for awhile, but it would prove to your mom that you are serious about your NEXT pet being a rabbit. You won’t “settle” for anything else.

Alright thanks Beka!! I have three ferrets, 1 being 5-6 years old and the other two being around 1 year old. Average lifespan is 6-8 years and since Chewie has adrenal I think his life span may be on the shorter side :’-(. By the time Oliver and Ember pass away though, I’ll be in college. Chewie’s also the “family” ferret (now that just basically means my mom helps out with pet sitting and vet costs), so I’m not sure how that would work. I think since I take care of him and no one else does it will be fine :-)!

Wait, your mom allows you to have a ferret, but not a rabbit because they smell? I always thought ferrets smell a lot worse than rabbits lol.

Also, how old are you? I’m 16 and I’m able to volunteer at my local shelter…

If you’re diligent they don’t smell *as bad*. I’ll tell you what, though, it’s much more work to keep the ferrets from smelling than it is for the rabbits. I have three ferrets and sometimes I can smell them when I walk in the door.

I like ferrets, I think they’re really cute and funny, but that’s the one thing that stops me in my tracks. I can’t stand animal smells. If I walk into someone’s house and it smells like dog or cat… I just start to dry-heave and I want to leave. We knew a girl growing up with a ferret and he was so stinky. I hate to stereotype animals like that, I’m not sure if hers was not fixed or whatever (I don’t know about that whole thing with ferrets) but I just don’t think I could do it.

That was what I found interesting about Bigsis’ parents too. They allow the ferrets, but I guess it’s b/c they like ferrets. I think the bunny smell thing may just be b/c they don’t like bunnies period.

Really Shayna, at least you get to have the ferrets tho, some kids aren’t allowed any pets. ;o)

I know that bunnies don’t smell as much as ferrets, but my mom is certain that they are :!
PAP, I’m younger than 16. Age limit is either 16 or 18.
Beka, Ferrets are sold spayed/neutered and descented, so maybe they just fed him something they weren’t supposed to. Ferrets are carnivores, so if fed fruits and veggies they stink SO bad! Ferrets on meat don’t smell or smell very little. My mum didn’t like ferrets at first, but she does now. So I’m confused I guess, lol! And yup I’m super lucky to at least have my furrets :]!

Really?! That’s interesting! I wasn’t aware of that! Thanks for the info!
