We;ll be going out of town for about four or five days in October (so it’s a ways away) and we’re trying to plan around poor little miss bunny.
We won’t be taking her with us (because it would TOTALLY flip her out) but we do have family and friends staying behind that can come over and feed her, but I have a few concerns.
First, she is usually given 1/4 C of food at 7 AM and then a 1/4 C of food, her salad and fresh hay at around 7PM. Can we feed her just once a day, giving her the 1/2 C of food, the salad and the hay all at, say, five and let her regulate her intake? When we got her (she was a rescue) she was on a grazing diet of pellets and she was a little chub, but since it would only be a few days, would that be OK?
Second, playtime. She’s used to being out for about 5-6 hours every day. Obviously, I can’t ask people to spend 5 or 6 hours at our house every day while we’re gone to let the bunny out – but I think having strangers around is going to freak her out enough, so the notion of letting one of them take her home (they all have pets of their own) seems like it would be more stressful for her. So what I was wondering, she’s in a NIC cube cage…and it’s a large-ish size. [ cage picture ] I’m wondering if it would be OK to build up a second “pen” if you will, outisde of her door and line the carpet with vinyl so that if she has a housetraining accident, it’ wont ruin the carpet. We could probably double her living space. It’s not perfect, but it might work. OR, second option, we could pen her in our kitchen. She hates the kitchen. Linoleum + bunny feet = slippery. But if we threw a few blankets down we could just bulid wall of nic cubes and pet gates and keep her penned there.
Your plans sound very well thought out to me. I think it might be a good idea in September to change her feeding schedule to the one that she will be on when you are out of town so that you can monitor how she does, and she can get used to the new food schedule.
For play time, since it is only 5 days, I think that your extra pen idea will be just fine. Make sure to set it up a few days in advance so you can let her play in it and see if she finds any creative ways to escape
Also, if you look at the menu under “bunny info” on this site, you will see a page for “bunny sitter guide” – it is a really good page to look over.
Good stuff your planning already! I agree, start changing her diet ahead of time, so that it’s not a big change all at once. She’ll be fine for a few days with less or no out time-maybe mad at you but fine
The bunny sitter guide is fantastic-I make one everytime I leave town even though my ‘pet sitters’ (friends and family) have been looking after my crew since it was one bunny-I just like to get all my emergency vet info on there and all the regular stuff too!
That’s good advice ^ adjusting her feeding closer to the time when you go away. The pet sitter could place out 1/4 pellets, salad, hay, then scatter more pellets about perhaps. This would have her hunt for themover time, so she won’t chow down a whole 1/2 cup at once. Plus it’d keep her occupied. A pen added onto her existing cage should be ample room. You may need to make a top for it though.
I agree, it sounds like a good plan. I would not be comfortable having the bunny sitter let the bun out for paytime unless they were familiar with buns. She could get scared b/c it’s a stranger (not YOU!) and hide somewhere, she may choose that time to be impossible to get back in her condo, or she may figure out ways around the bunny-proofing and the sitter might not notice. I’d feel better knowing she were confined and safe. Adding onto the condo is a great idea. I agree to set it up at least a week or a couple weeks before so you know how she handles it and you have time to make any last minute adjustments that might be necessary. If you order from BinkyBunny or another bunny website, you might want to get some nbew toys or chew things to keep her occupied while you’re gone. You can instruct the sitter to give her one new toy a day…
I’m sorry, I don’t recall what kind of bunny she is… but for some reason I’m thinking rex? (I might be confusing you with another member tho! Wouldn’t be the first time!) 1/2 cup of pellets a day is a lot. You said she was free-fed before, so it’s good you’ve reduced them. Are you planning on cutting them back more? The general guideline is 1/4 cup per day per 5 pounds of rabbit, altho many people go less than that (1/8 cup or sometimes less) as that will increase hay consumption. Just wondering… That amount definitely caught my attention.
Absolutely do not have your bun go a friend’s house, especially if they have other pets. That will totally freak her out and she’ll think she’s been abandoned! Start gradually changing her diet, and feed times. I have the same problem when i go out of town with her play time. I don’t think she notices overly much, I mean I let her out when I am there, but it’s almost like she doesn’t expect the same amount of play time when i am not there. I think most rabbits are lower key then us, their owners! ![]()
Thanks for your feedback everyone. We will adjust her feeding schedule to once daily before we leave and see how she takes it. I am still considering penning her in the kitchen. (We rent and the carpet in the living room would be victim to her if she managed to get through the plastic and the landlord would NOT like that.) It would give her more space to roam and keep the carpet safe. Plus, if no one is living in the apartment at the time, there wont be food or crumbs on the floor. Her cage is on rollers, so we could wheel it in and then bar off the rest of the entry way without issue.

Meco is a lop actually. She weighed almost 6lbs at her vet visit and 5.6lbs when she went back for her spay in February. She’s thinner now than she was then – not a lot, but a bit. At a glance, the vet thought she was overweight when we brought her in, but when she picked her up and felt her ribs, etc… she said she’s actually fine – she’s just large (lotsa fur). In truth, she actually gets less than 1/4 C for breakfast and lunch. We use a 1/4 C measure, but underfill it and she’s learned to regulate herself well. When we got her, she was on an Alfalfa pellet with “snackems” in it. Now, she’s on a 100% Timothy pellet and she gets what probably amounts to 1/3 of a cup per day – but the real money is in that it amounts to 2oz per day, which is what the vet suggested we feed. She actually hates her pellets – – she loved them when they were alfalfa, but now that they’re timothy, she’ll eat her salad and her hay before she goes for the pellets
When we leave, I will pre-measure everything and pre-make her salads so they can just be grabbed and fed.
