Both eyes are like this. I clean them, they are good for few days then they get like this again..Any thoughts?
Thank you all
It looks like she might have an infection. I’m not an expert on bunny ailments, so I’m not positive, but she needs to see a vet for treatment. Do you have a rabbit savvy vet that you see, or can we help you locate one in your area?
Hi,
Thanks..I have a regular vet…which I don’t really like..They charge a lot for 1 min spent with them…If you can locate one I would really appreciate it. I don’t know any just rabbits vets around here..My zip is 90504,CALIFORNIA.
Thanks
I understand, not all vets are good with rabbits! I’m emailing the other forum leaders for their assistance with finding you someone who should be able to help.

Check this page… are these in your area? It’s possible that you might have to travel a bit further to get to a good rabbit vet, but it’s definitely worth it for a higher level of care.
This page lists some that might be in your area as well… http://www.bunnyluv.org/veterinarians.htm
Aw…poor girl. I am so glad you are wanting to finding a rabbit-savvy vet for her. It really does make a difference in getting the best treatment.
Continued wet eyes can also indicate teeth problems. And if you don’t notice the incisors being off, it can be the molars (which you can’t see)
It is true that vets can be expensive and with rabbit-savvy vets, they do have to actually get extra schooling to deal with exotics – and rabbits are actually in that category because of the way they react to certain meds, anesthesia and a host of other things that are different from the standard cat and dog issues.
But at least since you will have to pay out some bucks you will be getting your moneys worth with a rabbit-savvy vet rather than wasting it with appointments that don’t give answers.

Oh yes -that’s vet time. Let us know how your search goes for a better vet and how her eyes are doing!
Zeza – is that pine bedding I see? Remove the bedding and that may help too. Bedding isn’t necessary except in the litter box really and shouldbe a paper-based, dust-free bedding.
THE UPDATE!!!
I FEEL SO BAD. The vet told me she is fat and needs to be on hay and veggies only. He said she should be maybe half her size![]()
So I brought her to the new vet, they were closed, then i went to another one, however they couldn’t take her until 4 pm and I was there at 10 am. They said if I leave her vet will look at her in between calls. The office visit was $57 just for leaving her there and figuring out whats wrong with her. At 2 pm the vet called me and said:
1. She has alot of wax in her ears and he wants to check for ear mites. He’d take a swab and look under microscope
2. The eye-he said tear ducts could be blocked, so he would flush her eyes and if it comes down the nose something is wrong with her teeth, and he would also stain her eyes. He said flushng sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t
3. Diet
So when I picked her up I payed $170 + $57 I payed in the morningfor all these things plus he prescribed Bytril twice orally a day and drops 3-4 times daily in her eyes.
He said flushing- she did has some stuff when he flushed but he recommends second flushing althought sometimes it will resolve that thing on her eyes and sometimes it won’t. If it doesn’t then he recommends x rays to see if her teeth are overgrown or impacted cause he couldn’t see anything when he opened her mouth. He said she had a lot of saliva and that is the reason he couldn’t see anything..
Any thoughts? Is he the good vet?
Any recommendations for her diet?

It is ASPEN BEDDING. sHE GOES POTTY IN ALL 4 CORNERS.
Well, he does sound like he is covering the bases on her eyes which is good. It is possible it is dental but he wants to see if it’s a infection first so he sounds like he’s doing his due diligence.
What type of activity does she get? Maybe you need to encourage her to be more active as well as looking at her diet.
Can you tell us what her current diet is? How many pellets are you giving her – how much hay – how much veggies?
The cost doesn’t really sound unreasonable to me either.
My husband was giving her 1/2 cup pellets a day and timothy hay every day. I let her run in the kitchen.
I would reduce the pellets to 1/4 cup for now. Also slowly start introducing her to veggies. Unlimited timothy hay should be the bulk of her diet – does she like her timothy hay? There are other grass hays as well that you can feed her.
I would increase her playtime out of the cage as well. How much time does she get out?
Thank you for letting us know how the vet’s went! I agree that the vet sounds like they are doing a thorough job. Vet care for buns is not inexpensive, since they are exotics they tend to charge more. Once she is in good health again and it’s no longer an emergency situation, you may be able to do some more research for vets with slightly lower prices, but it’s important she get care now.
Another option for exercise, if you cannot allow her out as much as she needs, would be to attach an xpen or grid fence to her cage. when I did that with my bun, she lost weight within a month. She could come out of the cage whenever she wanted and run around inside the area, even if it was at night or when we weren’t home.
Phew! I’m glad you got her in-her eyes looked pretty bad. He’s right sometimes the flushing will clear them right up-if it’s just an irritant. But if theres a underlying cause of the weepiness-then it’s just solves it temporarily. I’d say he’s thurough and knows what he’s doing. I’d say he sounds good. And the price sounds very on par with what I pay here-not extrodinarily high or anything
Alpine is a good bedding to use. BUT maybe the dust is clogging her ducts. You might want to switch to just newspaper for a bit and see how that helps. She may just be sensitive to dust.
A couple of weight loss tips I have-having one chunky bun and a couple at our shelter who could loose some weight.
1) Put food at one end of the cage and water at the other. Then put something in the middle that they have to jump over to get to the other side.
2) Increase playtime-best way to lose weight healthily is to do it through exercise. Give her more to do-like towels for digging, phonebooks for shredding, cardboard houses for playing in(you can make your own) and cat tunnels-they cannot resist running through a tunnel and you can pick one up at the dollar store or walmart for cheap.
3) Increase hay. Add hay a few times a day rather then once. Although the hay isn’t ‘fresh’ that your adding anymore so then what’s already in there-they get excited and eat some when you put it down-so give them a bit a few times a day and you’ll notice they eat more.
4) Add more veggies-as others have said. They love them so it’s like a treat and green veggies are high fibre low sugar so they are good for weight loss.
Keep us posted!!!
Thanks for all responses..IO made her a crad board box and gave her phone books and empty cardboard toilet paper rolls..I only let her out when I’m home cause i have 2 dogs(maltese and lhasa apso mix).Lhasa apso is great with her, however maltese wants to play with her so he paws her when he gets a chance..So she is out only with my suevision..I will do all above you guys sugested.
Thanks
what type of pellets are you feeding?brand and are they alfalfa or timothy based?
Have you tried to litter train her? If you can get her to potty in a box- you could switch her bedding to something sompletely dust free such a piece of fleece. I used wood pellets for litter for my buns- but other than that their cages are covered with fleece blankets. I wash them once a week or so- and it is cheaper than using bedding I would say. Newspaper like an option like K&K suggested- but I don’t like when the ink stains my buns feet- but if it helps her eye the trade off is worth it!
HI,
Timoty hay and pellets are/were Kaytee-supreme fortified daily blend. I tried other beddings such as a fleece and she always ends up in her litter box or she would pee on a fleece in her cage.
Is she spayed? It might help w/ your litter training.
Kaytee makes a timothy based pellet which is preferred to their other pellets. Most of their pellets have added junkfood (seeds/fruit). I had a chunky monkey that I was feeding her a Kaytee seed/pellet and that’s what really made her fat.
I agree w/ the exercise thing and understand your need to supervise. I have 4 cats w/ my 2 bunnies and I have to supervise their time together. Is it possible to increase the size of her cage? Add an x-pen? or even confine her to one room during the day when you are out? Another thought…I got the bunny maze and attached it to my buns condo. They used this as their exercise area. B/c it’s a big cardboard maze, they were safe from the cats.
On diet: I do limited pellets, unlimited hay, and giant green leafy veggie salads for dinner. Also, when my hay or pellets get dusty, Jessica does get some eye irritation, but not as bad as your bunns. You’ve found a good forum. Keep us updated.
