My buns are going to the vet for the first time for a 1 year check up just to make sure everything is alright. Is there anything that I should ask specifically for them to do or look at? What is a normal bunny vet visit? Also, my buns hate being picked up, I dont want to traumatize them but I also dont want anything to be wrong. Easiest way for the car ride? Just kind of unsure and nervous about the whole thing.

I would put them in the carrier together – make sure there is something soft at the bottom (not newspaper) of the carrier if it’s a plastic one because they can slide all around.

Normally a well bunny exam will include the vet checking the teeth, the eyes, the ears, checking the temperature and weight and asking you questions about diet, etc…I think it’s great you are doing this – I always encourage rabbit owners to start having a relationship with a vet and vet clinic by having regular rabbit exams because it’s important in case of an emergency and you need to see the vet – the vet will already be familiar with you and with your rabbits.

yes that is so true.  A well vet visit is the best kind.

I usually put a towel in the carrier for comfort and traction ,  toss in some hay and pellets for munchies.  I bring a little tiny water dish with filtered water in a bottle and once I arrive i offer some.  Usually they won’t drink but then my vet is just up the street so I doubt they have time to get thirsty.

Yep the teeth eyes and so forth mentioned previously is usually what takes place.

I agree with Sarita, it is great to get a relationship with a good vet, and to get your bunnies used to going to the vet in case there is ever an emergency. Having 8 bunnies means that I usually have a reason to go to the vet more often than once a year, and its nice to be comfortable with the vet, and know that there is someone that can help me out in an emergency. I would use this time as a time to evaluate your vet just as much as your bunny is being checked out.

Don’t be too nervous about taking the bunnies in. Bunnies in general don’t love being picked up or being put in the car, but they will be OK – and its good for both you and them to get comfortable with it. I like to talk to my bunnies while we are in the car to re-assure them, and make sure the car is nice and cool inside.

Great stuff! Always good to find a good vet and start a relationship with them before anything is wrong. And getting a baseline on your bunnies before they are ill is great too!

For a regular check up my vet does a very thorough exam with her hands, she generally gets some good info from that -it’s mostly muscle and tummy stuff-she checks teeth with a scope, checks their vent area, their eyes and ears -just general stuff.

Let us know how it goes!

Well they went to the vet, and all was well, they both weigh 6-6.5 pounds healthy one year old bunnies! The car ride went better than I expected but once we got to the vet and had to get taken out of the cage, it didnt go so well. Started with her first, some flailing I learned that she snorts really loud when she gets over anxious and worked up, Davey did not appreciate all the commotion and started jumping and launching himself around the inside of the cage in the exam room. Overall a good experience, I am definitley glad I took them. The girls who helped weigh them were very cautious and careful with them which was nice to see and their Dr. (the same one who fixed them) was so surprised to see how big they were and had gotten since he saw them the first time! Very nice, and very careful and gentle with them! Came home, they jumped out and went into their pen and flopped and took a nap! Not too traumatizing!

I love well-vet visits!!!  Especially when they go so well…they make you feel like an awesome pet owner.
