  Well, I made the mistake of going to petfinder.com today. Not mistake…I’ve actually been thinking of getting a second rabbit. But MAN did I get hit with a toxic level of adorable! Anyway, I found this little girl… http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/di…id=8530482. I’m emailing the Rescue shelter now. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

  she’s beautiful! I’m planning on adopting my very first bun this summer actually. Is that how it works with petfinder? You dont have to fill out any paper work or be put on a waiting list? I’m not really sure how the whole adoption process goes If anyone wanted to explain that’d be cool..haha

  Hi, wymyczak66! Welcome! Petfinder will probably actually direct you to other organizations, such as shelters or rescues, who will probably require some sort of application process. The extent of the process will vary with the organization. For example, only so many people will drift pass any particular rabbit rescue, but lots of people may drift through PetFinder, so all the rescues (even if they have their own website) will probably post their buns on PetFinder as well. The rescue I adopted from required me to fill out an application, have a home inspection, and pay an adoption fee (which covers a minimal part of the spay/neuter). The fee will vary, and the home inspection may not be required by every organization, but most adoption agencies won’t just hand you a bun without making sure you’re capable of taking care of it! But if you ARE serious about it, the process is really not that hard, in my experience. They just want to make sure that their bun doesn’t end up getting dumped in a park a few weeks later. But we have other memebers who are more active in rescues, and they may be able to answer more specific questions…

  Why wouldn’t anyone have taken her yet? Hopefully it’s because she’s meant to be for you Jamie. Lovely name, would you keep it? She doesn’t look as big as they say but a good size given Laylas size. Keep us posted and most importantly; crossed fingers for you!!!

  Midwest Rabbit Rescue is a huge rescue- they have over 100 rabbits listed on Petfinder. And it looks like they try to bond a lot of them into pairs so they can adopt out bunny pairs.

  Yeah I am planning on taking Layla with me to meet Apple…. if they don’t get along or if it doesn’t look good, I figure they have so many bunnies, I can probably find another that Layla gets along with better! She’s never met another bunny (not since she was a baby) so it’ll be interesting to see how she reacts. She’s so laid back with me and my parents’ pets that I don’t anticipate a problem, but you never know. I certainly want them to be bonded though… I would love Layla to have a little friend to love.

  Oh and Jersey, I had a name planned for a bunny I would get but I am kinda partial to Apple… I would have to deliberate on that. I really want a bunny named Prudence though. haha…

  Are you set on getting a female or will you just see how it goes? I know what you mean about Layla not being around other bunnies before. They almost don’t seem to recognise one of their own breed. I was reading ina bonding article about a bun that took 10 or 12 dates till she started to interact postively with another bunny. Her humans suggested it took her that long to learn to a language on the previous dates and become familiar with other rabbits.

  I wondered that about Pepper too – that she doesn’t know she’s a bunny. We did a bunch of bunny-dates, and even took one home as a foster but she was totally hostile. She likes big or older dogs (dislikes small yappy ones) and is okay with cats and adores people but I eventually got the idea that she really didn’t ‘speak bunny’.

  Well, I spoke with a woman from the shelter on Thursday who suggested that I consider a male bunny rather than a female due to bonding, etc. But I’m definitely planning on making a trip out there, probably sometime this summer, and taking Layla in to do some “speed dating” to see if she can find her bunny lifemate, whether it be a she-bunny or a he-bunny. I’ll keep you posted! I will just love to have another furry friend to love.

  The general rule is that opposite sex bonds are quicker and easier. I’m glad the shelter told you that, that shows that they really know buns and they want you to find a successful match. Two males are difficult, two females are the most difficult of all. I would absolutely recommend that you do bunny dating and allow her to pick a friend. It’s HARD when you fall in love with a picture and story on Petfinder (darn you, Petfinder! J/K!!!) but if you’re serious about wanting her to have a friend, let her do the choosing.
  
  On the other hand, if you are OKAY having two rabbits separately forever, there wouldn’t be anything wrong with adopting Apple and trying to bond her with Layla… but if it doesn’t work out, they would just live by themselves… You’d have to be prepared for two cages, two separate runtimes, etc… for the next ten years tho…

  She is sooooo cute, i like the name apple, if she was mine it would be funny at vet as they use your surname dont they are mine is lemon so they would call out “apple lemon please” lol dont know if all vets do that but ours does. x
