Here is the problem.
Buttercup has decided she likes Pigs food.
He is 14 and so well trained I know he will starve to death if I put the food on the counter. We where babysitting a puppy once and had to keep the puppy crated most of the time because Pig can not overcome his conditioning.
So, besides training Buttercup to stay out of the food what else could I use to help keep her away that wont also drive Pig away?
Can you make a low fence around the food that Pig can hop over but Buttercup cannot? Can Pig still jump? You said he’s getting up there in years… If this works, it may just be a temporary solution tho as some buns can hop over barriers.
I am surprised that Buttercup will eat cat food- cat’s are carnivores and must have meat in their diets- so I am sure the cat kibble must have some chicken, fish or etc. I would definitely try to avoid Buttercup eating the food as it can cause digestive upset and her system really is not set up to handle processing protein from meat.
My bunnies dislike cooking smells and would not even consider trying or even getting to close enough to sniff to cat or dog kibble.
Beka,
Pig can still has his vertical but is horizontal has to be so low Buttercup could make it over too.
KatnipCrzy,
Tanya switched Pig to “Dad’s Indoor cat formula.” It is a protein and fat drop, and a fiber increase for him, exactly what she was looking for because she started giving him canned food a few months ago then he started getting fat.
After reading the ingredient list, if I where a bunny I might want to eat it. It smalls like dry vegetable stew.
What drives me nuts is, she wont get near the wet food and he wont eat if we mix it with the dry. I even tried rubbing some of the gravy on his dry bowel to keep her away and he sat in front of it crying like he does when the food gets mixed.
I think I’m going to build a platform above his letterbox. It shouldn’t be difficult to convince him to use it and I’ll be able to hear her trying to get up so I can correct her before she gets to the food.
The danger in them eating cat or dog food is protein-high protein can cause liver damage. As well, cat food is full of junk -it’s fine for cats but no good at all for a bunny.
Could you put it in another room where the bunny can’t go-or just not allow the bunny in the room with the cat food?
Unfortunately the opening between the kitchen and the living room is 14′.
I’m successfully training her not to go upstairs by making her go back down each step, she was trying about 20 times a day and now it is down to 2 or 3 times.
I finally found my jig saw so to day a platform gets made above his litter box and I’m going to hang a strip of sleigh bells on it so if I hear a quick ching I know Pig jumped up but if the ringing is longer then she is trying to scramble up.
It’s a bonus because I’m going to add a couple of shelves above it for the animals food and reclaim some cupboard space.
LOL That’s great news! That’s great your handy and can just make up a platform for that! ![]()
Tanya moved Pigs food to the bed room because he spends a lot of time in there and Buttercup isn’t allowed to roam.
We gave them a communal water bowel, she gets the other side of the bowel for her pellets and we would still feed Pig his wet food there.
This worked great until ‘Lil Ms. Butters decided she liked meat.
The fist thing she ate (I don’t mean one mouth full) was chicken and tuna, then salmon. I figured she likes fish but then came the chicken deluxe, and the beef supreme. Now pig gets everything in the room.
Last night I was eating baked chicken and raw green beans, I was eating on the floor because I was sharing with the Pig and figured I could give Lazarus and Buttercup some beans. Wile I was opening Lazarus’s ball to give him a bean buttercup snatched a chunk of skin from my plate. A big pile of green beans and she takes the chicken skin.
I HAVE A CARNIVOROUS BUNNY!
Oh No! I don’t think she knows she’s a bunny! Is Lazarus a bunny?gineapig?hamster? Eating down at their level is asking for trouble, and if she sees you feeding Pig, sounds like she wants to be in on it too. I was wondering if you put the cat’s food bowl inside one of those cat boxes with a flap door or would she have no trouble using the flap door?
Does she get plenty of fragrant hay to graze on through out the day? This should fill her up so she shouldn’t be looking for their food. If it’s any consolation, my Jersey becomes very curious when ever I eat tuna. It must have a sweet smell. Must say though, Buttercup’s a funny one!
I like jersey girl idea of cat box with flap and cat food inside and if you got one of those ones that locks and only opens if the animal wearing the cat collar that unlocks it then buttercup wouldnt be able to get into it. Although not sure i would want to have to eat in a box lol xx We used to bunnies that would try to steal our pasta and tomatoe sauce but that makes sense really whereas cat food is def different bless her lol xx
Instead of building a free standing shelf I glued a platform on the top of Pigs litter box, this is working and she isn’t even trying to get up.
She has taken to peeing on the mat in front of it so I have to check to make sure Pig isn’t walking through it.
jerseygirl,
Lazarus is a 7 year old rat.

Bet you can tell the type of trick he was involved in by his name.
thump! that was me falling off my chair. I was cruising through my emails very quickly, saw the title “Cat’s food” and the picture of the mouse(rat?) in the same instant! hehhehe
My son had a pet rat years ago, and I’d get looks in the checkout line putting cat, dog and rat food on the counter.
I always have to put my cats food up on either a table, or the counter, the dogs eat it all the time if I don’t!! I would suggest trying to find a place where buttercup can’t get to it for certain!!! I’m laughing at the carnivorous bunny!!!! =)
