So i adopted Bella a few months ago and shes really over weight! Her previous owner did not feed her right at all! No hay just junk food! So ive put her on a diet of unlimited Timmy hay and a little cup of pellets in the morning. Its been a few months and she hasnt cut down at all…When i let her out for a run she curls up somewere and sleeps. So I was wondering if you guys had any good bunny weight loss tips?

Really activity is the best answer – can you find some toys that she would like? Maybe play chase her – not to freak her out but just to play.

How much does the little cup of pellets measure out to?  1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 2 Tablespoons?

It can make a big difference WHEN she gets exercise time. I am not sure what your set-up is for her, but I used to have my female rabbit in a large petstore cage when I first got her. I eventually expanded her space so she always had a pen attached to her cage 24/7. She ended up losing weight within the first month. The fact that she had a larger area and could choose when to come out to play enabled her to exercise more, even at ngiht or when I wasn’t home. I put some toys and a box for playing/hiding in the pen. She loved it.

My Lola loves to get up on things but she was too heavy to hop up. I put out old cushions by the couch and certain chairs when she’s out and she spends a lot of energy climbing up and down, same withthe ramp into the condo. She doesn’t need pellets, but when it’s her time out I scatter a few around the living room and she’ll spend hours looking for them (and I can sneak Daisy her ration while Lola’s out and about)

At first her binkies were more like a body shimmy, now she can launch herself into the air quite well. When she’s the only bunny out I leave all the gates open so she can follow me around the house and really get some exercise. She’s so nosey she can’t stand not to be in the middle of whatever I’m doing.

Pellets can certainly be fattening – likely you can cut them down a bit. Have you had her seen by a vet since you’ve had her? There could be a medical issue attributing to her weight. I am aware you don’t have a lot if any rabbit vets where you are, but even a regular one may be able to find something or at least have access to resources to look into it further for you.

Also…I’m sorry but I have to ask, she hasn’t been near that partially neutered buck of yours has she?  Or was she spayed before you got her and are you certain of this?

She doesnt like any toys ive got, we dont reallyhave any selection here.

She proboly has closer to 1/4 cup pellets, im worried about giving her less because i dont want to risk starving her, shhe eats them so fast…but you guys think itd be ok to cut it down?

No, she doesnt get along with my other bunnys so she hasnt been near Fluff except though the cage.

You can make getting her food a bit more challenging. Jack got chunky because I would always find him stealing Rucy’s portions! He’s actually lost weight now, but he has some more to lose – = I spread his pellets around, and/or put them in different hiding places and so he has to get up and move to eat his food. Plus this caters to a rabbits more natural foraging behaviors anyway. So if you can spread who food about that might be helpful. When he did have a pen, I used to place the greens up and around between the pen bars. I’m sure you could the same with a cage.
