  Background: Myxomatosis virus was released in Australia to cull the wild rabbit population. There is no vaccine available in Australia for rabbits kept as pets.
  
  There has been reports of some domestic rabbits succumbing to myxomatosis in the metro area where I live. I had naively assumed it was only present in rural areas, so this news has left me nervous. The website I read of this is a rabbitry+rabbit rescue that keeps abreast of all things local. They mentioned a homeopathic preventative for myxi that I have enquired about but have yet to hear back.

  Has anyone heard of or used such a product? It’s a bit pricey and I don’t want to pay for a placebo. Any thoughts, info etc would be appreciated. Thanks!

  I am very nervous about using anything without vet’s advice. I know Scarlet has some “homeopathic” experience/knowledge, but I also know she is very clear that it should be used in conjunction with your vet. I have never heard of it myself. Have you contacted your vet to ask about this?

  Thanks Beka I sure do, and I totally ditto working in conjunction with your vet on this type of thing.
  
  Jerseygirl, I took a look at this “immunizer” and anything homeopathic with these types of outrageous claims is totally bogus. I’m sorry but there is no herb in the world that immunizes anything against any virus. There are many herbs that strengthen your immune system, and one that can be used with reasonable safety is echinacea. It helps to strengthen/boost the immune system to better fight off viruses/infection and has been used quite a bit for rabbits that have head tilt. Your best bet is to keep your rabbit inside and hang up fly traps and/or flypaper to prevent them from bringing it into your house and possibly infecting your rabbit. If you remember, Alibear lost her rabbit, Honey to Myxi an dshe lived in Sydney.

  Frustratingly, there is no cure for myxo, including “immune boosters” and there is no “immunizer” from it.

  I don’t recall that about Alibear – how sad! I was pretty wary of this I must say. At the same time, could have easily purchased it just to feel I was doing something too. There is some campaigning happening here to try get the actual vaccine for the domestic pet and meat industries. Last time I was talking to a vet about it, she said the vaccine itself is complicated to administer too. So a homeopathic remedy seemed too simple. I think perhaps is is supposed to act like an immune booster.

  OK, so I have a reply to my email. I was given details of a vet who I can get the product through (not necessarily the product I posted about above). So this is a qualified vet who used to practice in my city but now is interstate. He has a Holistic Vet Practice. I’m going to contact them to get some detail about the product. Will also ask opinion of my own vet. I still don’t know if this particular product is an immune booster or claims to be a vaccine etc. Will keep you posted.
