        Hi

Poppy had her spay on fri afternoon and has been quiet which i expected, she is drinking fine and eating parsley and carrot but wont touch her pellets, i have sat with her just stroking her really but when i came in from work today i wanted to check her wound looked ok and she will not let me near at all and keeps grunting at me, she has never grunted before so im arseuming she is in a lot of pain but how do u suggest i look without upseting her

Pellets are usually the last thing to return. Is she eating hay and veggies?

Some people hold up a treat and have the bun stretch up and take a quick peek. You do have to look at it every day. Your only other option is to lift her up very gently and hold her upright, maybe have someone else take a peek if you can’t get a good angle.

Was she given pain meds to take home?

OH good she is eating. They usually eat the vegies first. Then the hay after a few days then the pellets.

She will be ok. This is normal. Us worry wart bunny parents. I was so worried with my girl too. Which is also normal.

Females do generally take longer to recover than males do. I’d say it is pretty normal for them to be eating only minimal amounts for the first couple days, and her poops will probably be a bit off too. It is definitely important as Beak mentioned to look at the spay incision at least once a day to make sure it is healing correctly. You will probably see some redness and dried blood, but you shouldn’t see anything that looks infected, if you do call, call the vet ASAP.

For looking at the injury, I usually just get my hands under their front “armpits” and lift up and get my head pretty close to the ground to look underneath.

Is she still only eating parsley? If that continues you may have to do a bit of force feeding with some critical care to get some fiber in her, but I’d only use that as a last resort because it may upset her even more. Has she eaten any pellets or hay yet?
