In regards to the thread that digxmexnow started about bunny poo earlier- does anyone compost with their bunny poo?

I have a small yard- and am considering if it is worth it to compost all the hay, poo and used wood pellets.  Do most people build an enclosure to hold all the stuff together?  Do you have to add other stuff?  Do you just skip it in the winter?  (We get major snow here).

I do. I started adding it to one I had already started. The mix of poop to hay/wood ratio is already pretty good. With compost I work on about 3:1. That is 3 parts dry matter (carbon high – dry leaves, hay, woody materials, paper) to 1 part green (nitrogen high – green cuttings, lawn clippings, manure etc)

With the litter box contents, you could pretty much throw it out over the garden. Just watch the urine being acidic I guess on certain plants.

At the shelter we do. We have a small compost pile for horse poop that we muck out of our small pens (the big 20 acre field does not need mucking, just spreading) and we decided that all our bunny poop/newspaper/litter should be composted. So we’ve been piling it up for months (you do NOT stand close to the pile peee-euuuww) and we are tarping it at the end of this month. It will be tarped all spring and then June or so we will load it on a tractor to spread over the pastures. Bunny poops is great fertilizer!

When we have a house (in two weeks!!!) I’ll be spreading it on our garden. Bunny poop doesn’t have to be composted-in that you can spread it right on your beds/grass and it won’t burn. All summer I was taking about twenty poops to the patio and putting it on my planter that I grow parsley and herbs in for the bunnies-it works great!

I tried to start a compost pile but I ended up moving, so I took a small garbage can of it with me. I live in an apartment now so I don’t know how I could start it back up again though.

Great tip about bunny poo going directly to the planters. I will surely do that this spring. I already water my plants with fish tank water and fish poo water when I clean out my filters. It really does wonders! So if you have a fish tank, don’t waste that water.

I have a friend who is big on organic gardening who takes mine. I empty the litterbox hay and poops into a big plastic tub and take it to her. She spreads it as mulch and fertilizer.

I notice the shrubs where I shake out the towels are growing like crazy already. Must be good stuff.

We started composting ours in the fall, in fact we’re thinking of adding a 2nd composter for it. Also toss in the veggie & fruit scraps, eggshells etc.

I want to start a compost because I grow a big garden. Does anyone else compost who uses Yesterday’s News? Do you have to build an enclosure? How long until the compost is usable, like to put on a garden?

We used to use yesterdays news, for the most part we now use the wood pellets. We’ve got a plastic compost bin with removable panels and lid that we use. We just started it last year but from what I remember from doing it at my mother’s place we should be able to get some usable humus from it this year (I think).

You don’t need too much enclosure wise. You can form a u shaped bay (like a mini horse stall ) using sheets of iron or pallets or chicken wire even. What ever you have available. Then start layering in your compost materials, lightly water then lay some hessian or something to keep moisture in. Even old piece of carpet straight on top of the pile. This enclosure makes it easy to access and turn with a garden fork when required. I couldn’t say how long it takes to break down. Depends on what mix you have, temperature of heap and also outdoor temp. I good thing to do is add some premade compost to innoculate the new heap your making. Basically, when the heap has reduced, is dark in colour and smells earthy (not putrid) then it should be right to go.

I used to use a product like YN and it’s fine for compost. Counts toward the carbon content.

I always compost, but I hadn’t even thought of composting their litter. I use YN and I can’t believe I didn’t clue in that I could just dump the whole thing right in there. I’ve always just put their litter in our Green Bin (our cities organic waste pick up), but why should I give it to them to make compost out of when I can just add it to mine??? I feel so dumb now lol.

my family composts to it makes the soil extra rich and we have 2 acres of land so we made a little spot by the woods where we put all our compostable waste there we dont add anything to it and we do it all year
