         Hello

Currently in Howeys condo we have a pet fleece blanket at the bottom so its nice and soft for him. He is really good with it as he doesn’t poo or wee on it but recently has started to claw it. It’s got holes in it now and we don’t want to buy him the same kind as he may do the same again.

This clawing is a recent thing and as he keeps trying to let himself out.

We were thinking of buying him a vetbed instead. What are your thoughts on these? does anybody have one for their little bunnies?

Hope you can help….were very close to buying one xx

I’m pretty sure vetbed is the same thing-fleece/faux sheepskin/vet bed. If he’s digging because he wants out, why don’t you move it to a location he doesn’t dig-would that be doable?

I have various seagrass, bamboo-ish, and rag rugs in our condo.  They also have an old towel in their bed that isoften used as a diggy clothe.  I know w/ my beasts when they start the super digging…it means they want that out of their condo.

It is normal for all of my blankets and fleece to have lovely little decorative “holes” created by my rabbit designers.

Many times when rabbits find their special place to lie down, they will dig at it. I feel like sometimes this might be their attempt to create a “scrape” in their favorite spot. A scrape is dent in the ground that their wild cousins dig. It allows them to sit in the compfy spot but sit farther down in the ground a bit so that they are more out of site and feel safer.

So, what I do is get a very soft fleese blanket and build up the sides (either by putting old towels underneath) or if the blanket is large enough, then I will just use the extra material of the blanket. Though it’s not down farther, it gives that same feeling of being hidden by edges.

Placement of this is very important for Jack (and Rucy). If I were to put that in their hidey house, Jack would tear that thing up and push it out. But if it’s lying out in a larger space, then they just hang out on it. If it didn’t have the sides built up, there would be some “redesigning” go on.

I know for some bunnies, this won’t work, as some may have other digging intentions, or they don’t like the “scrape” you’ve made, but it might be worth a try.

Great bunny condo by the way!

Hi, we have a bought a vetbed in place of the fleece and he loves it we have cut a large square out of his fleece and kept it in there for him to dig at and he is so happy with it. He hasn’t even marked it, still goes in his box (when he is in the cage that is).

I would definately recommend a vetbed to anyone xx

Haha and I thought that Archie was just super clean about his space and was trying to dig up the dirt from the floor before laying down

My rabbits have a big plastic tub as their bed.  I have a nice towel in it and keep it covered w/ the bamboo tent.  It’s sometimes a challange to move the big tub out for a good scrub.  Last time I took it out I was totally scraped up.  I thought that I had not been providing them enough towel in the bed, so I’m glad you explain the “scrape” BB.

Is this the reason that anytime I get a nice basket to use for veggies or hay…Leo usually uses it as his personal loafing pan & potty!

I am also intrigued about this “scrape” thing. I wasn’t aware of this. I know of course that they prefer to sleep or lounge “unseen” (which is why the willow tents, tunnels, and the Maze are such awesome hideouts. But that makes a whole lot of sense… I wonder how they’d react to one of the larger dog beds, the ones with the higher sides?

I also thought rabbits didn’t like to be seen whilst sleeping but Howey sleeps right at the very top of his cage in full view to all

Some of my bunnies also like to sleep on the top floor as well. Its probably because our buns have become so spoiled and domesticated they no longer have the natural instinct to sleep in a protected area. Mine think they are lions surveying their territory or something. My husband always makes fun of Juli for being so domesticated, he said that if she met a bear she would probably demand pets from it!

I agree with BinkyBunny, I would just pile up a nice big fleecy blanket there, you can get them cheap from stores like Marshall’s or Ross or places like that, then you don’t have to worry when the bunnies make holes and such in it. Also, we love the fleece at our house because it traps a ton of fur.

Beka – The dog beds for some reason got used like a litterbox by Bailey and my very first rabbit, Forrest. I think it’s because the bunnies may have to sort of hop in. Where with the homemade scrape, I usually have at least one flat side to enter into it, or I just build up one side only. With the dog beds, because the sides are all up, I can see where a rabbit may mistake it for a cozy litter box.
