My boy is an angora and gets marshmallow type poops sometimes. Read a lot about cowpoop syndome and have taken him to the vet who assures me theres nothing wrong him. His droppings are regularly normal size and shape. But once in awhile he gets those smelly marshmallow type droppings. Usually just one then back to the regular droppings. I have been presecirbed Reglan and benebac just as a precaution. Im tired of going to the vet for these items.

Anywhere online where I can purchase these items??

benebac is sold at petstores, you could probably get the other stuff from a feed/farm supply store.

            Hi there!
I’m not totally sure what you mean by marshmallow type poops…do you mean cecals? They sort of look like a bunch of grapes?

At any rate-there should be no reason your bunny has perpetual bad poops-whether runny, soupy, cecals etc. I would *first* try to find another vet in your area and try them out. Your in California and the good thing-there are LOTS of shelters and vets out there. Would you beopen to trying a new vet? Members from CA can certainly recommend some vets to you. I’m not happy with bad poops not being diagnosed.

Basically that’s either a diet problem, or a disease/sickness or parasite. It can be hard to diagnose, and treat but it can also be quite simple-for instance getting rid of pellets or swtiching hay.

But anyways first things first-you need to have your rabbit diagnosed by a very good vet and find out exactly what is wrong. It is NOT normal and NOT ok to have mushy poops. We’ll help you find another vet if you need

            Keep us posted!!

            *members from CA-vet recommendations?

Reglan is a prescription- so your vet would need to write a prescription for you to be able to purchase it elsewhere.

Benebac is sold many places on line and in pet stores- it is a probiotic.

I read a little about cowpoop syndrome several months ago also. K&K, the term “marshmellow type poop” is a common description for rabbits with this genetic condition (being that poop is larger, lightweight and spongy and I think sometimes the cecal and fecal matter is mixed).

Wordmonkey, I would contact Dana Krempels regarding your concerns about Cowpoop syndrome. She seems to know about the conditions and has had bunnies herself with the condition. I’m sorry, I do not have her email address. (can anyone provide this?) I think you may be able to contact her through this site: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/hare.html

Also, some links to questions posed to her about this condition and preventative meds.

Sorry if you have seen these all before.

Well most rabbits with this “cow poop” syndrome have a particular marking.

Your vet should be able to refill the reglan for you.

K&K, I came across this syndrome when looking into causes for rabbits eating their fecals. Lightchicks’ Lizzie was cleaning out her box doing this. Lizzie apparently stopped (due to new hay I think). My Jersey also eats some of her fecals fairly regularly. Anyway, it was suggested that bunnies with Cowpoop Syndrome may do this as the fecal and cecal are thought (?) to be mixed together.

As Sarita mentioned, most bunnies with the condition are white with coloured patches or spots and brown eyes. Weird! So, Jersey and Lizzie both falling into that description – it got my attention. Though, no marshmellow poops at my house…………………i think…….
