          Hello everyone

I’m new here and have just recently had a rescue bun from the RSPCA.

Now, me and my partner have never owned a rabbit before, let alone a house rabbit (although we have researched immensly)  Howey is a lop (not sure what kind of lop though) and he is approx 3 years old. He is absolutely gorgeous and so friendly.

There are two things I want to ask:

        1) The first night we had him we gave him chance to settle in his cage so he could get used to it. His cage is HUGE and has different levels so he had a lot to explore. After a few hours we were able to pick him up and he nearly fell asleep on me whilst having a cuddle. We could do this for a couple of days but now he hates us to pick him up. We don’t really mind this but I was just wondering……..Why would he of let us do this in the first place?

        2) - the main question– We litter trained him and he was so good about 99% of the time. He got neutered 2 weeks ago still the litter training was great, not a poo in sight. BUT we went and bought a rug on the laminate so he wouldn’t slip everywhere and it has totally ruined his litter training. He poos constantly on it. I understand he would want to mark it as his own but he has properly started using the whole rug as his toilet!! ……….Any ideas??

Overall he is a very happy boy, he binkies all the time since having the rug and sprawls out on his belly and flops and loves nudging us. We just don’t understand what has happened with his litter training.

        Hope you can help us.

        Thank you xxxxxxxxxx

HE is sooooo cute.  oweeee.   That little paw on his dish oh my gosh.

Hmm the rug… I don’t know I would remove it personally if he is using it for his toilet.   Hopefully he will get back to normal.

The picking  up as you probably know most buns don’t care for it.  The first few times he may have been so overwhelmed or so happy with his own home that he didn’t mind.  Now that he is settled in he is comfy showing more of his dislikes.

Awe I am sure he still loves cuddles and all the love he can get though.

congrats on the cutie he has perfect matching  brown spots on his nose too.

Welcome! Your Howey is a cutie. I really like the pattern on his ears and those nose spots to! I was surprised to read he let you cuddle on the 1st night – most of us don’t get that honour. Could be he needed the comforting and was ok to receive that from the humans – then likely he just got all Independant!

With the rug issue – I would remove it. Some reason, they will pee on absorbant things. Towels, rugs, couches, beds etc. Once his litter habits have improved again and sustained, maybe try give him the rug again. Put a treat in his litter box to entice him back there.

EDIT:  Ok, are you meaning a rug on the floor outside of his enclosure?  If so, try putting another litter box out in the area where he has exercise/play time. When you see him starting to mark, pop him in the litter box and reward wit head pets or a small treat.   Or, keep him penned up until his litter habits have returned.

Do you hail from the UK or Australia? I don’t think the term RSPCA is used in the US but it is here (Oz). Howey looks like a Dwarf Lop to me (known as a Mini Lop in the US. Also, the UK Mini lop= US Holland lop).

Well isn’t he just soooooo cute!!! I agree w/ trying to put a litter box near or on the rug. Could also just be his hormones still settling after the neuter, this could take up to a couple months!

                  Hello

Thank you so much for replying. I have added some more pictures to give you an idea of the rug and enclosure we have for him. He is only ever in there when we are in bed or out at work. I have also included pictures of the rug that has converted our little angel into a poo machine, but it has also made him so much happier and started doing binkies thanks to the grip, and he loves to stretch his legs out on it so we can’t get rid of it.

As you can see in one of the pics we have put a litter tray next to the rug….so far so good!! He has been hopping about for an hour so far and not a poop in sight….and 2 binkies already to start the day.

We are from the UK. Its nice to know he is a dwarf lop…..although I thought he seemed quite big. I have also included a picture showing his markings on his back. Such a beautiful boy!

We’re not too fussed about the picking up issue (although it would be ace!!) but he does hop on us when were on the floor with him and he also enjoys chasing us.

Thank you all for your help, I will keep you posted on his litter habits

                xxxxxx

I love your cage setup, very cool how it fits right in that dead space under the stairs. He’s super cute too. You said that he only is in his cage at night or when you’re at work, well maybe you gave him too much freedom too fast. I know it took a little while to get Ruffles totally trained because we were so eager to let him be a free range bun, but in retrospect, we should have had him caged longer until he consistently used his box. Just a thought. And if he’s laying on you, that’s a great sign, I don’t think too many rabbits enjoy being held, mine hates it, but will snuggle close to be petted and occasionally will hop on us. How does he do on those wood floors? Mine slides all around on the floors and will not venture in the kitchen because of the floors.

He’s beautiful! Welcome here! I also love your condo… that’s great the way you were able to put it in what might have otherwise been wasted space! What a great idea! I agree that you may need to limit his pay space until the habits improve, too much space too soon is not always good. Is the rug washable? He is probably just marking it since it’s new, pick up the poops as soon as you can and deposit them into the litterbox. Is he peeing on the rug? Usually, “littertrained” means all the pee in the box and and MOST of the poops in the box. There may always be some on the floor, but that doesn’t mean that he is not trained.

And thank you so much for rescuing him, it looks like he’s going to be VERY happy with you!

We did give him full freedom straight away and no he doesn’t wee on the rug, just poos all over it. He didn’t used to to anything other than in his cage. The rug isn’t really washable its just a normal wool rug. Funny thing is, the while floor of his cage is a big fleesce blanket and he never toilets on there.

He does really well on the wooden floor, he has found a way to hop on it without making a peep clever little guy.

He also has his own little mat by the tele which he used to use to lie on, he never pooed on that, but the mat has since been rejected now he has a big huge rug to binky on!

                      xxx

That is so neat you have them a place under your stairs.  Great place to put their home.

He looks like a Mini Lop (in US breed terms).  I love his coloring!  He is so handsome.  I love that male bunnies can have calico cat coloring- as 99.9% of all calico cats are female.  I think it is so neat to see a bunny with that coloring- and the spots make them so unique.

Wow, Howie lucked out- that is an awesome cage that you made for him and it fits perfectly under the stairs.

How much does he weigh? He might be a dwarf (mini lop) crossed with a Rhinelander. That’s a larger breed and has the line down the back and the same colourings as Howey.
Great little set up for him. Glad he’s taken to litter box by the rug. Sounds like a smart guy. He was most likely claimng the rug with Territorial Poop. It’s slightly shiny as they coat this poop to give it a smell. He likely feels it is thus claimed and understood by all. Well after all – it is HIS rug!!! You did get it for him so he wouldn’t slip. LOL Sounds like you’re bunny slaves!

Jerseygirl he is 1.93kg, thats very interesting because I thought that he would be smaller if he was a dwarf. I think I spoke too soon about him and his extra litter tray as he just done a big pile of poos on it……. He is so funny, when we scoop up his poos with the little spade he runs up to us and yanks it off us so his poos go EVERYWHERE!!! the little scamp.

Bunny slaves we are……there is a new man of the house.

My boyfriend is so good with him too, he loves him to bits. He is sitting on the rug with him now getting him to use his litter tray. My two special boys xxxxxx

So cute! And love the cage!

I have a mini lop but he is 6lb so he is kinda big but normal size. Holland lops are the smaller of the lops are are about 3-4.5lb. At 3yo he should be full grown.

The one thing to remember is that buns poo on things to “mark” or put their smell on things so if that rugs smells like a store or you or something else, he is pooing to make it smell like himself. Perfectly normal. Although..he might just begin pooing in other areas of the house to claim other areas so you may need to eventuallly put potty boxes in other areas of the house especially if you are allowing him free range all day long. We have 4 buns that do not get free range but when we are home whoever is out with us we have extra potty boxes downstairs and 1 extra potty box in the living room just in case they dont want to run downstairs to go potty. Then we hide it if company comes over.

My husband never thought in a million years he would be so obssessed with fuzzy bunnies but he adores our bunnies. Hoopie our newest is his best bud. They hang out together, he follows him around the house, etc.

Anyways, welcome! This is the BEST BEST bunny place in the whole internet world for bunny help! lol

Pepper will attack the dustbuster when I try to clean up stray poos from around her litterbox.
