Well it’s probably too early to get excited but I just had to share.
I rent right now with Dave. I like our apartment, it’s nice and it’s big for an apartment-almost 1000 sq feet. However our rent is high; Most of you probably read about our horrendous day when the fire alarm went off, then flooding, then no heat or hot water…because a boiler exploded in my building. Sooo instead of an apology at the least or a break in rent-they sent us a notice that they are raising our rent. RAISING it-in this economy??
There are vacancies all over-we moved in during the housing crisis when they could charge anything they wanted as there was nothing available. There is just no justification for raising it. Although we could afford it, I’m just sick of renting. AND we’re in a third story walk up so it’s a pain to take up groceries, take out garbage..just a pain in the butt![]()
Sooo I started bugging Dave to get our own place. Things are still pretty expensive here, but it’s no longer how it was-bidding wars on houses, houses selling for above asking price before they are even listed. Some people are sitting on houses for months! However a small house, 600 sq feet in a bad part of town is still going for 200, 000 plus. ![]()
So we’re looking at trailers! I know…But there is a really nice trailer park in Sherwood park (A suburb) which is close to our parents as well, close to work and closer to my shelter (I currently drive forty plus minutes to get to my shelter, if we move it will be fifteen minutes.)
The bonus would be cheaper payments monthly PLUS we’d actually own something -have something to show for how much we’re paying monthly. It’d be a bit larger then our apartment (approx 200 more sq feet) and four hundred$ less a month! AND we’d have laundry machines in it, rather then using shared apartment laundry-a big plus for me!!
OK the BEST part. They are three bedroom trailers, so the bunnies get their own bedroom!! I’m so excited-I’m going to paint it and put one of our couches (we have FOUR couches lol) in there so I can go in and hang out with them! ![]()
So I’ll keep you posted but we’re meeting with mortgage brokers this week, and Daves best friends parents are realtors so they’re already lining up places for us to view-one even has a hot tub in the yard!!!
How Excitement! Hope the negotiations go well for you guys. You must have some serious trailers over there. 3brm? You can paint them?
Best of all, no one can evict you for having rabbits!
This is one we are looking at-
http://www.realtor.ca/propertyDetails.aspx?propertyId=7881621
I like that we can renovate-there will be NO CARPET (aka flooring that stores rabbit fur!!) anywhere!
Awesome! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you! Owning a small place is definitely better than renting, even if the rented place is bigger. We bought a small house instead of continuing renting a flat (which we rented for about 2 years) and it’s so worth it. In 20 years we will own this house instead of paying someone else’s mortgage every month.
And having a bunny room is awesome! You get to fill it with lots of bunnies and bunny related things! I’m in the process of redoing my bunny room so my rabbits are actually shacking up in the living room right now.
That’s awesome! I really, really hope everything works out for you guys! Wow, a 3 bedroom?! My idea of a trailer are those little tiny things where you can hold hands and touch each wall! That sounds great, tho. Keep us posted on how it all goes!
I know hey Beka!! When Dave first brought them up I was like NO WAY but looking a them they are bigger then most of the affordable houses-1200-1300sq feet
-and we won’t have the wee little apartment bathroom (I have three sets of shelving crammed in my bathroom to house toiletries because there is Noooo counter in our bathroom and only one sink!!).
*fingers crossed for bunny bedroom!!*
That actually looks pretty nice – is that a hot tub in the last photo?
Scooter here. I admit I had the same initial reaction to “trailer” as many might, but after looking at it some more, this place doesn’t look too bad. We have seen your apartment, K&K, and you have seen where we used to live: a very modest rental house of 1100 sq. ft. This mobile home is bigger than that, and definitely has a nicer interior. And the price is right…way under what you must be paying for rent, even if you had to borrow it all.
I’m starting to think that we should have looked into this!
What is the resale market for mobile homes in the Edmonton area? Unless you feel you will stay there forever, you will want to make sure that you can sell it eventually. That was the one thing that made me feel better about NOT buying even a condo when I first moved to Edmonton in ’02 before the housing market really took off: it would have been difficult to sell it last year, so if it wasn’t rented, we’d be dealing with double mortgage payments.
Thanks Scooter. I think that’s the reason it’s so reasonable-it doesn’t fluctuate like houses do, because they are like vehicles and depreciate. We are probably moving to Calgary or Saskatoon in the next two years, IF i get into vet school so we will have to sell -hopefully that works out!!
Sarita-yup! That’s what’s making me love it-I really want a hot tub I get aches from some ofthe lifting at the shelter (Straw bales OMG) and I miss the tub at my house when I lived with the rents! (Many places in Edmonton have hot tubs, I think because of the winters? No pools really but everyone has hot tubs!)
Scooter here. K&K, what would it cost to haul the mobile home to Calgary or Saskatoon and get a place to hook it up? Conceivably you could do that and have a place to live when you’re in vet skool. Neither of those towns are cheap anymore in terms of buying a house.
Might want to see what the cost for insuring this is too…
Well the rents say when we are back in school they will buy us a place (not to keep of course) so we don’t have to be paying rent/mortgage to helpu us, but that’s pretty interesting-move it-yeah it IS mobile!!
Probably would cost a fortune to move including the insurance and whatever else it would take to move it since it’s probably tied down and would have to be retied down in the new place.
I get ya now. That is an impressive size! Reminds me of these pre-built home you can get here. They come flat packed would you believe, and are erected in just a day. It’s on my list of future homes. Only way I’ll own my own is to 1. Win a Lotto home 2. Buy a prebuilt home but I’d have to be able to afford land too : ( 3. Rough it in a rundown one or 4. Build my own eco-friendly straw bale house!
Why wouldn’t you go there! Pay for own home, no rent hikes, no stairs, no adjoining neighbours, more room, and a hot tub!
v.exciting! sounds like a great plan. its great having a wshole bedroom for buns ![]()
How exciting! Looks great. There are definite benefits to owning – like not having to deal with the landlord! Out of curiosity, do you have to rent or lease the space the trailer is in and do you have to pay property tax? Later, maybe if you do decide to move into house, though trailers do depreciate, you could rent it out. You could be the landlord!
I grew up in trailers all from the smallest you can imagine 16′ wide and 50′ long to HUGE ones with 5 bedrooms 2 bathrooms walk in closets the works. I don’t mind them but there was only one trailer park I LOVED when I was little it was like one big family.
Good luck lol if you have never lived in one you will either love it or loathe it LOL
Wow Sonn! 5 bedrooms in a trailer?! That’s hard to imagine! I’ve never lived in an apartment even! After we got married we rented a duplex house in Cleveland and now we rent a house currently.
How is it weather-wise too? Does it cost more to heat/cool than a traditional house? And BB makes a good point about the property it sits on. If it’s temporary, that’s one thing but I know land is sometimes worth more than the actual structure. I’d hate to see you lose money on this. Fortunately, it sounds like you have folks looking out for your best interests, so that’s good!
Just seeing this now. It’s very attractive looking. I was also thinking that being mobile you should be able to take it with you when you relocate for school.
Also, I have an idea that in the future if you buy some land you can park it on (what’s the water hook up situation like?) you could build your own shelter on it and have your home ready and right there.
These heat well enough for your winters?
With the time it takes to find a new house, moving into this now might be well worth getting away from that troublesome apartment asap.
You should TOTALLY keep the NEMO ROOM for the bunny’s – Hahaahaaaa!
There is a tailor Park in Boulder that is considered to be one of the more Friendly neighborhoods – Like Sonn said – One big family.
We’re viewing a few on Wednesday!! Including one we found last night, it’s 1500sq feet, and it’s super cheap because it’s being sold in an estate sale-so they want it gone asap!!
Dave (he’s a fix it, do it yourselfer-luckily one who does a very good job and knows what he’s doing-we’ve all had someone we know who *thinks* there a fixer guy!!
) is already researching what walls are not load bearing and can be pulled out (he wants kitchen-living room to be open concept) and already bought suppllies to make cement counters in the kitchen!! We’re hoping we can take posession right away so we can do some renos’ while still in our old place-I want the bunny room set up before I move them, and before we pack-because I don’t want them getting upset.
For the property it’s on, there are lot rental fees, generally up to 400/mo, but mortgage on a trailer (I mean the cost of the trailer is really about the cost of brand new full load truck!!) is approx 500/mo sooo even combined they are much cheaper then rent. There are taxes but they are quite cheap, less then 1000/year! So they are in a park, the land has a rental fee but you never get to sell the land and they don’t sell it on you -it’s pretty much a permanent lot rental. A few that we aer looking at are in corner lots too so they have a big backyard too (well big for what I’ve seen in Edmonton/Sherwood park-when I lived in Southern Ontario-Sarnia, our backyard was an acre!)
So I guess we’ll have a good idea on Wed/Thurs about how doable this is and when we get it!!
Nemo-room-is soooo going to be bunny room! I love Nemo!
Well, we are going to look at them tonight and apply for financing…hopefully Dave has enough moola-cuz I sure don’t LOL ![]()
Good luck!
kk dont feel bad i live in a mobile home for well the same reason you and dave are looking! go for it there is nothing wrong with them especially for a young couple like my bf and me and you and dave i only have a 2 bedroom but mine is double wide and very open. our park is nice and the bunnies have their own room! go for it!
fingers are crossed!
oh and my house hasnt depreciated at all! it has accutally gained equity in the four years i have had it there. not a lot but its not going down either.
i jsut saw bb’s post about the equity
Thanks Angelina!!
Well we went and saw two last night. One we really liked the space, but honestly it’d be months before we could finish the renos needed plus the cost was way too high considering the thing needs to be gutted and redone-roof, everything!
The second one we looked at was already redone-so really we want to take one wall out and carpet out of the bunny bedroom-and new dishwasher. Everything else can stay as is. We want to do some renos to customize which this is perfect for-we do not want to gut a trailer and spend a year redoing it the last one was waayy too much; It has a big backyard, wth a firepit and two sheds. Only two neighbors because it backs onto a store. I really like it, and we’re figuring out the down payment and offer stuff tonight-hopefully sign in the next couple of days. It’s owned by a company that housed employees in there-but laid off the employees so they want a quick sell and say they are open to offers-that to me says we can drop the price alot!
Anyways I’m super pumped-its like thirty more square feet then we currently have-so not much bigger-but theres a YARD and a washer and drier!! I’m freaking sold LOL
…and a shed for HAY and WSP’s!
Just had to point out…
Posted 3/09/2009
and here you are, ready to sign on the dotted line!
Best Wishes!
Well we have an accepted offer on it….Just hope the financing comes through at something we can afford monthly…If it doesn’t I have to get ahold of my parents in Phoenix and borrow money or something!! ![]()
Woot!! The financing came through!!! ![]()
Here’s our new place-we get it April first!! ( I told the bunnies we were moving and they didn’t seem to care
)

are out of there!)

)

Bedrooms -3 (plus crazy lady)

Hey – that looks great! Congrats on the financing! It looks like your tub would match the fridge and stove that’s currently in my apartment. Such a beautiful shade of goldenrod. :-p
Yippee! I love that the 1st pics you post of your new home are of the loo! LOL! Um…when you guy’s have finished removing you yellow sink and tub, can you come down here and do mine? Least yours isn’t fluorencent like!
I’m sure the buns will be excited once they’re there. They’ll show this by popping out excited little pellets everywhere -just so you know! ![]()
I’ve decided to call territoral poop Tecals. It’s quicker to type.
Anyway, Congratulations!
Congratulations!!!!
Wow, that’s great! Congrats! You certainly move quickly!
Good luck on getting the crazy lady out of there. She definitely looks like trouble.
If you need a good exterminator… ;o)
Congrats! There’s nothing like owning your own home. It’s a great feeling to know that you can actually paint the walls, build a garden, and take out some crazy 70s tub.
I hope your bunnies love it!
HAHA…Beka made me laugh! I so needed that.
This is just so exciting. Yours all yours!! Yahooo!!! Hey, and bathrooms are very important! Steve and I live in an old 1920’s home and the bathtub is the smallest thing! It’s like trying to sit in a sink! No Luxury bath time around here. If we weren’t renting, we would have taken out that thing.
What a great backyard too. I’m so happy for you.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Thanks!! I’m so excited!!
Beka-as always hilarious!!
Thats funny!
I love that “crazy lady”
Congrats on your new place ![]()
