  Hi! I joined this forum because I’m planning on adopting a bunny this summer. Right now I live in the dorms at college, but I’m signing the lease for an apt. on tuesday (thank god!). My name is Jessie and I’m going to be a junior in college for computer animation this fall. I just wanted to introduce myself because I plan to be on here often , especially once I adopt. I’ve been looking up about breeds and everything, and I’m just wondering if there are any breeds that are known for being nicer or more affectionate. I know Im not going to be picky obviously becuase I’m going to get whatever breed needs to be adopted, but I thought a netherland dwarf or holland lop sounded nice and I’m hoping to get one of those two.
  
  I already plan to get an x-pen and everything all ready ahead of time, but I’m going to mexico for 2 wks in july so I think it’d be a good idea to wait until after that or maybe not even until I’m back at college to look into rescue centers. Ive never owned a bunny before but I’ve always had guinea pigs, cats, etc. They sound like great pets! and a lot cleaner than I thought!
  
  oooh also, is it true that petco’s adoption center will pay for your bunny to be neutered/spayed if you adopt from there? I think I read that somewhere, who knows maybe i’m nuts. I applied to petco also, not just so I can keep an eye on the adoptions, but because who wouldn’t want to work with a bunch of animals all day?

  Welcome here! That’s great that you’re doing research before getting a bunny! And thank you for looking into adoption, there are so many buns that need forever homes!
  
  Breeds are really hard to generalize. The few that *tend* to be true are: small = skittish (Netherland Dwarfs are known to be skittish and not as affectionate). Big = calmer. Lops are not necessarily calm. I have a lop who is not a mellow guy and hates to be held. Of course, for every generalization, there will be buns that disprove it.

  Look at the individual bunny rather than the breed when making a decision on who to adopt. Petfinder is great for this. Oftentimes, the staff will write up a little paragraph about the bunny, what he likes, what he doesn’t, what his personality is like. There are so many shelters across the country to choose from. The benefit to adopting (aside from saving two lives) is that the buns will be spay/neutered and usually littertrained already. You pay an adoption fee (I’ve seen anywhere from 50-100 bucks), but since “speutering” can cost 100-500 dollars, you definitely get a great deal!

  Rabbits are as individual as people, I have 6 and they range from Mr. Mellow to Psycho Diva. Adopting a mature bun from a rescue will let you find one whose personality is pretty well set, has settled down from the neuter or spay and is just a joy to get to know.

  Welcome! Yes, we sure do love pictures! I am relatively new to the bunny world myself. I got my Lily bunny last summer- she’s a dutch mix. I’ve found this forum to be EXTREMELY helpful and informative. Always good to hear from experienced bun owners and everyone here is super nice too!

  Hi, welcome to the boards! As far as breeds go, usually it’s the smaller the breed, the more aggressive they are – the larger they are, the more relaxed. But as already posed, it’s not always true.

  Welcome! It is so nice to hear how well prepared you are going to be for your bunny, and how much research you are putting in ahead of time. As far as breeds, I’ve always found that the larger breeds are more social and more calm. But I think that if you go to a rabbit rescue, the bunny will find YOU as opposed to YOU finding the bunny Have you tried petfinder.com ? Its a good way to look for rescued bunnies – I look at it all the time to pass the time at work *oops* don’t tell anyone!

  haha, yeah I’ve looked at petfinder. I live in western ny, and there are usually bunnies around my area, actually I was looking in my local newspaper and someone had a free bunny to a good home. I get all excited but then remember I cant adopt one yet : (
  
  As soon as I get one Im totally taking pictures, I’m really big on taking photos. I think I have more pictures of my friends’ pets than they do!

  Welcome!! i also applaud you on researching and planning prior! You’ve received some great advice already. Just wanted to add that there are also many rabbit rescues in new york. if you google new york rabbit rescues, you’ll find not only the house rabbit society branches but other independent rescues. Maybe you’ll be able to find one close to you.

  Hi and welcome! Thank you for doing such a great job researching before adopting a house rabbit, they are a lot of work and are not a cheap pet to keep. There are lots of things to buy and vets are expensive as you will need one that specializes in rabbits (an exoctics vet). If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
