› Forum › DIET & CARE › Sammy is feisty! Spay so far so good.
Well, I just called the vet for an update – thought I’d start a fresh post. She came out of the anesthesia at 12:30 and the surgery went smoothly.
Now it’s 3PM, and she is awake and “feisty”. To quote Angie, my vet’s assistant, “she’s full of bunnitude!” It seems that their choice of anesthesia is one that does not leave them groggy for hours, far from it. So she’s already been given some food, was about to be given some greens to try, and has made a bunched up mess of the towels they put her on. As Angie said when I mentioned that the heart shapes in her bag of pellets were her favorite treats, “I gave her one of those first. Actually, I kind of threw it at her, like throwing food to the lions.” (I was LMAO). She said they take it as a very good sign. They’ll keep her overnight to watch her for pain, etc. They gave her Metacam before the surgery and she will be due for more soon. I may have a couple of days worth to take home too.
I am to call in the AM to find out when to get her tomorrow. Assuming all is still well. There isn’t an overnight person after all, but I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. They are strictly exotics, mostly birds, and very, very careful and attentive.
Please see my post on my new carrier. A multiple opening is easier for the vet, but I want to know if this one is a good choice. Thanks.
Thanks for the link, K&K.
SOUNDS GREAT! I am so glad she’s feeling okay. Wow, that’s amazing that she’s so active already! What kind of anesthesia do they use, do you know?
I think they generally use a cocktail, and use isoflorene gas? But I could be mixed up.
Congrats Sammy!!
No idea. Usually I spend time there and chew the fat with the Doc, but they were very busy on the phones, and just said leave her and her food and they’d call me as soon as they were out of surgery.
She was mad at me when I left. Did NOT want to get into her carrier. I believe her mood hasn’t changed…
Your Sammy seems like such a character! I’ve been keeping her in my thoughts today knowing she was going for her spay so I am so glad to hear she is feeling “feisty”! That’s great news!
I guess she’s there alone now. I’m thinking of her wanting to be home again. I hope she isn’t scared.
I found a puppy pad at Target that’s soft, with a puppy stuffed face and waterproof pad built in, but now I am concerned that she’ll eat the fabric. It says use caution if your puppy chews. Maybe a new carrier is enough for one day. I pay the bill tomorrow, so that should put an end to buying bunny supplies. Thank heaven it’s also payday.
Did someone mention cocktails?? Woohoo! Pass ’em on down here! xD
Glad to hear that Herself has come through her surgery okay and is back to…well…herself! ^_^ Throwing food to the lions…lolz….. I like that image.
You and I are both in “miss you” mode. Second night that Shadow is at the vets. It was so creepy not to hear him stirring in the back room last night. I think I had nightmares.
He was so out of it when we saw him today. My poor baby.
But I am sure Sammy will have all the vet’s files resorted, the other pets running around loose and probably they’ll have ordered some very expensive pet treats via internet before staff comes in tomorrow. ^_^
Fiesty is good! Times like these you must be grateful for her being fiesty – nail trim time, not so much! ((Sammy))
Yep, that sounds like Herself alright. A night of cocktails and exotic birds. Well, it is Florida after all. She’s a tropical tourist town girl.
It’s interesting to me that I have new automatic habits with her now, and not my old ones with Spockie. What I mean is when I glance around expecting to check out where she is at the moment, or listening for certain noises from the other room. I’m usually on the floor right about now.
Maybe we’ll both get a good night’s sleep and find happier, healthier animals in the morning.
So glad it went well! I was looking at an overstock of baby bunnies today at a pet store (lots of soft mini rexes, so I thought of you pam) and that reminded me of Sammy….She was so in my thoughts, even said a little prayer!! yay sammy!
Glad she’s doing well. I bet it brought a proud smile to your face when they said she was feisty!
AM update: Well, after a nerve wracking wait for a call back on her condition just now (they open at 9AM-I didn’t hear until 9:40) she is OK.
They want me to wait until 2 or 3PM to pick her up, and call first. They may give her pain meds then or send me home with it (both, I hope.)
She is eating her greens and did not pull any stitches out in the night so she’s doing well. Whew! I was online here at 3AM and had really bad indigestion myself all yesterday and last night which I attribute to nerves. Feeling better now after some saltines. Hope her gas pains aren’t too accute or lasting. That’s the worst side effect of most anesthesia, though I gave them plenty of food and she’s been eating right away so that’s good.
Later Gators.
Sounds great! Sorry you had such a nerve wracking night though – I hope you sleep better tonight once the princess is home.
There are just some days when it would be nice to be able to leave one’s stomach on the nightstand table with the eyeglasses and the hearing aids. 0_o Has anyone here ever fallen asleep with your eyeglasses on? Uncomfortable! Plus that nice nose bridge tattoo you have afterward. >.<
Well, it’s almost noon where I am, so I guess it’s got to be about time for Sammy to be home on your end, Pam. Let us know how she does and you feel better!
Well, you know the old joke about the guy who comes in with a headache, so the doc hits his thumb with a hammer. The guy howls, and the doc says “yes it hurts, but I bet you forgot all about your headache.”
My mother is basically fine and at home, but she fell on her way in to visit my aunt in rehab (she’s been terribly ill for 3 weeks) and my mother broke her kneecap, the bridge of her nose, and knocked 3 front teeth loose. Dad and I joined her in the Emergency room from 11AM to 3PM today. I left to bring her car home, call around until they connected with my dentist, eat for the first time all day and pick up Sammy. We are all wrung out, but the ladies are both tucked into their own beds and doing well, at least my Sammykins is. Mum is in a knee brace and a wheelchair. She’ll see doctors/dentists on Monday. Both are on painkillers.
Sammy is eating, pooping, and getting comfortable. Her Metacam is 24 hrs. and I have one syringe full for another dose if needed. She seems unlikely to because she has exhibited no signs of pain, her incision site is very clean and the stitches will dissolve. Here she is keeping her belly comfortable in her cuddle cup and leaning into her pellets dish.
Oh dear! ((((((((((vibes for you mom))))))))))))))))
Okay, Pam, what’s the idea of snatching my little black cloud away? Hm? *taps foot* ^_^
Please tell your mom I hope she mends soon and let Sammy know we’re all thinking of her here. (Mimz, Pip & Five send nose rubs)
(((((Pam))))))))) Hope things get easier now. Gee whiz, what a complicated year this has been so far!
OW! that all sounds very painfull!!!

Oh, your mom…ouch, ouch, ouch!!! Just reading that…major cringe factor. That was one very nasty fall!! Your poor mom! I’m sending healing vibes your mom’s way.
Sounds like your Sammy though is doing very well! That’s great! Congrats on the spay! whoohoo!
I’m sorry to hear that! Get Well Wishes for your Mum.
Thanks, you guys. This really helps. (checking in here for vibes and well wishes.)
I slept on a cushion on the floor in Sammy’s room last night. We both woke up a few times, but boy does she seem fine! She ate normally, pooped a lot, drank water. Slept meatloaf style on the part of the floor nearest me. Doesn’t seem to want the soft cushion at all, but loves her cuddle cup.
This morning she zoomed out of her house and went straight for her upside down basket that has her shredded paper and phone book in it. She was very busy for over 1/2 hour digging her pages in there. She took a good long time getting back to her house for breakfast. No hope of picking her up to examine her site, and even a hand mirror under her didn’t quite get under enough for me to see, but judging from her movements (she runs with her butt up high – I think that’s an English Spot posture. She’s always done that.) she is feeling totally fine.
I will leave here at 10AM, and decided to leave her alone since I’ll be back around 5. The owner of the dental practice I use saw my mother himself and did a very extensive exam and procedure to relieve my mother’s initial concerns. She goes back Monday, and the knee doc is across the hall in the same building. So this weekend will be lousy but she should be a bit better after Monday. She asked for light reading so I’m stopping by on my way to work.
Thanks everyone for all your support. I feel like I need a day off from my day off. Well, our next exhibit is Barbie’s 50th Birthday, so my job today is to work on a brochure. Basically, I go in and play with Barbies! If all my volunteers show up it should be a gentle day.
Oh my word Pam! I am so sorry to hear what your mom is going thru. That sounds awful and very painful! I will keep her in my thoughts, and I hope she gets better soon. *hugs* to all of you!
Hey Pam, when I wanted to check Boston’s incision, I would hold up a treat so that she would periscope, then sneak a quick peek! Maybe it will work for Sammy?
Great minds think alike.
When I got home about an hour ago, she was hungry and started periscoping. AHA *lightbulb overhead* so I took out a treat and held it up where her belly would face me. It worked enough to see that the area is still a nice bluish purple, not the red I was warned to watch for. No obvious swelling though I only got quick peeks. Thanks for the thought because I would need that advice by now if she hadn’t done it herself.
She has eaten well for supper and is napping. I think I am going to take her soft pad out of her house now. She hasn’t used it at all, just keeps squishing onto any available plastic bottom of her cage. The smooth surface must feel good to her tummy. I want her to have more room to stretch out as long as she is comfortable on the firm surface. They tell you what they want, don’t they.
My mother is resting and drinking Ensure for her supper. I brought a half dozen light reading books this morning. My sis-in-law stayed over there last night to help out. They’re settled in for the night and I am frankly really pooped now so will just putter on line or watch movies with my small beastie.
Hey Pam, I know you’ve got your hands full, but how are Sammy and your mom doing? (And are you holding up okay?)
(((((((((((((((rabbitpam)))))))))))))))))
Hi,
I’m finally home and online this morning, so here’s an update.
First, all are doing as well as could be expected. Sammy is playing around and generally inspecting all her favorite places in the home, though she puts herself back into her house sooner than usual. She is eating and pooping like a small horse. This morning her incision changed from black to red, which I can only glimpse, but I think it’s the stitches having dissolved, or healed over, or the scab or glue fallen off. It’s the 5th day after her surgery day, so I expect she’s out of the woods even if she picks. (I haven’t seen her even try to bite it yet.) No swelling and a light growth of fur all over the surrounding area.
Let me know if I should be concerned. She’s full of energy now and insisted on coming out again.
I left Sammy alone Sun. night and stayed over at parent’s house. The dentist really helped yesterday, though she won’t get new front teeth for a while (takes time to make them.). Her mouth and nose stitches come out this Friday. I’ll probably take her. My sis-in-law has been wonderful and stayed over there again last night. Mum and Dad think they’ll be OK alone tonight, and I’m there again Wed. night since I have Thurs./Fri. off. S.in-law has a job interview Thurs. so she needs to be rested. (She got laid off last month but is a great worker so will surely get this one.) Mum’s leg is in a long, soft cast that won’t come off for at least 2 weeks, but if she’s good she won’t need surgery.
I am exhausted. My boss is on her 2nd week with a cold/sinus infection and finally got on anti-biotics, so she’s miserable. We had a nice day alone at the museum yesterday actually. Just resting and puttering through our work and chatting. It helped, though today is back to busy. Well, TGIW tomorrow.
MM, I meant that YOU should come down to FL and bring the gang to get out from under your black cloud, NOT send it down here instead!!! LOL
Thank you for your well wishes. I feel them.
LOL Pam-so glad to hear her spay went so well-it does sound like she’s out of the woods. The first day is really the most crucial and sounds like she’s doing great!
I feel so bad for your poor mom-what a fall!! How painful!!
