My foster rabbit had babies on Sunday and this morning I woke up and she had moved the babies out of the nest box to the bottom of the cage. They seemed ok, and they were warm with full bellies, but I wasn’t sure if I should put them back in the nest box or not? I put them back in to make sure they stayed warm today, but if she takes them out again should I leave them out and leave a heating pad on under the cage?
Thanks for your help!
I would leave them where she puts them as long as it’s safe to do so. I would not put a heating pad in the cage or on top as long as she has them well covered – you might put a blanket over the cage just to keep any drafts out. Is mom covering them up well? If so I think they should be fine without the heating pad – Momma is usually good at making sure babies are kept warm.
Ditto that. I’m not totallty sure what you mean when you say she put them in the bottom of the cage. But yes, if it’s safe-leave them where she puts them. And on the heating pad-could make them too warm or burn them. If they are indoors with fur in the nest-they should be fine. I found putting some shredded paper in the cage-mom takes that shredded paper and adds it to the nest to hellp insulate.
What a surprise! Well, at least she’s with you… and there’s only two babies instead of several. Have you taken any pics?
This was taken Monday. They have grown since then, and I am awaiting next Wednesday when they start opening their eyes. I had to take them out just to make sure they had full bellies and Jane was feeding them.

Can’t wait to see more pictures – they are just going to get cuter and cuter!
They are so cute!!!!!!!
Aweee eeeee how cute… don’t you just love them already? Yes a small litter how very fortunate. I would love to breed and watch them grow up but naaaaa… I have seen them grow several times in my life I don’t need to overpopulate the humane society with more. Besides we can watch yours hehelol
You will notice because you are handling them from so young they should be very comfortable with being handled as they become adults and calm down Ruby is like that. Handled from birth and not a kick or fuss when I pick her up.
By gosh it is so neat to watch them more pics morepics more pics. PELEEEASE![]()
Aw how cute! And definitely a good thing that there were only two. I’m looking forward to seeing how they grow up! It sounds like Mom is doing a good job taking care of her two little babies ![]()
Oh my gosh – look how’ve they’ve grown. So incredibly cute.
That is so adorable. OH my gosh they grow up so fast don’t they. Even faster than our human kids. I just love seeing them pics of your babies. ![]()

SSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Show more pics please!!
LOL Those bellies look very full!!
Very cute pics!
Their coloring is so similiar to a Cottontail- but they don’t have the white blaze on their forehead. I hope you continue to post pics as they get older- I can’t wait to see their ears as they get bigger- because I think Jane and Bill are lops- so that will be interesting to see.
I got my dose of cuteness for the day……..wow, I love these lil baby bunnies!!! Adorable! You and Mama are taking good care of them. ![]()
That bunny in the hand shot is about the cutest thing in the world. It reminds me of the pics you see of tiny newborn babies, but way cuter
!!!! The itty bitty tail just makes me want to die!!!!! Too cute.
Those babies are obviously not having to compete for milk! Look at those chunky little balls of fur! What a blessing- a SMALL but healthy litter. Do you think your rescue will try to adopt them together as a pair?
Oh, they are so sweet! It would be great if they could stay as a pair too.
It’s possible we will adopt them out as a pair. That would be the best case scenario. Siblings tend to bond very quickly. If they are both female or both male it would be best to keep them together. But if they are female and male they will be separated and that means I will have 4 cages to clean!
We will see how they do as they get bigger and we are able to determine their sex.
They are starting to show their personalities a bit and it lines up perfectly with their parents! Bill and Jane are complete opposites like these two bunnies seem to be shaping up to be. Bill drinks 2 liters of water a day, and Jane eats 10lbs. of hay a day! (slight exagerations but you get the point) One baby likes being pet, the one runs away but then tolerates it once it realizes it feels good! Just like their parents! Bill tolerates pets and Jane loves pets! Bill explores and Jane is more cuatious. Bill gets jealous that I feed Jane so much more since she is nursing. “Where is my food!? Can I get some of those dried cranberries you have there perhaps?” The babies are definitely getting enough milk! Their coloring is turning out to be exaclty like their parents. They look like wild rabbits, but are lops. One of the babies tries scratching it’s face but keeps falling over. Eventually it will get the hang of it. ![]()
I really like baby rabbits that are lops because their ears aren’t heavy enough to flop so they stick out to the side. Steve was the same way!
Bill and Jane are the strangest color for domesticated rabbits!

Oh my goodness. You are killing me with cuteness!!!!!!!!!! They are the sweetest little babies… EVER!!! I didn’t even realize they are lops, but in that last pic, you can def tell by their ear shape. It’s going to be hard to let them go, but you’re doing such an awesome job caring for them, and mama is doing great also!
My goodness, they just keep getting cuter….how is that even possible, I wonder?!
That would be so neat if they could stay together. Their coloring is very unique indeed.
You and those bunnies are lucky to have each other ![]()
I will see if I can get video of it soon, but I saw for the first time one of the babies wanting some food! It squeezed under Jane, and then tried to flip over. It was humorous to watch because it didn’t even phase Jane. She just kept eating while the baby was struggling to get underneath her! HAH!
Aww, Jane……..she probably wondered why that baby was being so pushy!
How neat that you are getting to be a part of this process! A video would be sooooooo neat to see! ![]()
Awww they are adorable!!
Crikey! They’re little movers already!
ohhhh *squeee!!!* they are so adorable!!
They are fast little babies!
I will see if I have video of it, but the babies were doing binkies this weekend. It was funny to watch them because they are still uncoordinated so they were chaotic while binkying! ![]()
Baby bunny binkies! I can’t think of anything much cuter! ![]()
So neat that you get to watch them grow!
Videos of the binkies!
Here is the picture of the bunny’s ear. Oh, and I changed Jane’s litter this morning. She poops more than any animal known to man.
hehe…..little head-shakin’ binkies!
Oh my gosh! They are SOOO CUTE!!!!!
So the rabbit society suggests this for new baby bunnies,
Now my question is what do I do when I put Jane’s food into her cage and the babies eat all of it with her.
Everytime I feed Jane the babies are eating parsley, romaine, hay, and pellets. It cracks me up to watch them eat parsley because they move their head up quickly to keep the parsley from hitting their faces, but almost fall over backwards when they move their heads up in that fashion. HAH! ![]()
That is okay – they can eat what mom eats – don’t take it away from them. It’s only natural they would eat what she eats and if they are fine – don’t worry – that is just a guideline and it’s somewhat dated in my opinion. Vegetables are what babies would eat in the wild. The sanctuary I help at gives babies vegetables and they grow up just fine.
I usually would recommend veggies begin even earlier than what HRS says, you can start feeding at 8 weeks (basically right away, this is assuming most people would not get a bunny younger than 8 weeks old). But since they’re your babies, and they are already nibbling at it, I agree with Sarita, I wouldn’t stop them. If they end up eating a lot of mom’s veggies, you might start feeding her some outside of the cage in addition to what they all share.
I was wondering about that. They eat grasses and vegies found in the wild. And as babies just starting out so why not feed them greens at about 8-10 weeks. Or sooner.
They are so adorable. I love baby bunnies.
How cute
I think my favorite thing about baby bunnies is the baby bunny binkies! It sounds like they are very healthy little babies – you should take a video of them eating parsley sometime! I like mama’s face in the second video, as she’s sitting in her litterbox trying to stay out of the way of the baby binkies.
The babies are so funny now. My girlfriend got a new camera this weekend and there are a lot of new pics to show of the babies. Once she downloads them and sends them I will post them.
So now when I feed Jane both babies come flying out of the mini cat tree. “Parsley, parsley, where’s the romaine!” They eat right along side mama and I don’t stop them eating anything out of her dish. One pulled a whole leaf of romaine lettuce up on to the litterbox away from Jane so it could eat it alone, while the other one hopped on top of the food in the bowl to try and stake its claim from Jane. Jane rarely listens and normally pulls the food away from her babies. “I give them milk, all this food is mine!”
Yesterday one of the bunnies was eating parsley and it hates when the parsley get to a point where it starts hitting it in the face. So it keeps leaning back far enough to prevent it. Well this time it leaned to far and fell over backwards into the pellet bowl and scattered them all over the cage. I couldn’t stop laughing.
I have a good video of all three of them eating together. I will try and upload today some time and post it.
AW! They sound so cute! The website is undergoing some updates for a few days (as you can see it looks totally different right now), so I don’t think we can post pics right now. But in a few days, you should be able to.
More videos! They are 4 weeks old now!
Aw, thanks for the update! So cute and round! Love the way they run!
the clumsy binkies and short attention spans of the babies are just adorable! Can you tell the babies apart?
I can’t believe how much they have grown- they are so curious and confident already.
Wow – how did that happen? They’re such rolly pollys now! Do you know their sex yet? Do they have names? In dim light I imagine it wouldn’t be easy to spot them but for that white on the tail. Love baby binkys – they’re so spontaneous!
So cute in last vid how they all go visit Daddy in his condo. Looks like a jumper cable clamp on his door!
It is a very sturdy clamp. Bill made a break for it one night. I came down to feed them in the morning and there was poop all around Jane’s cage. I looked over and Bill’s cage was open but he was in it. “Interesting” I thought. He jumped off his Mini Maze Haven and busted the door open. Now I have to reinforce it.
I don’t know their sexes yet, and I can tell the two apart by their personalities. One is very skittish and doesn’t like pets. The other is very friendly, curious, and loves pets.
With the right home, the babies will never know cruelty, never know hunger, never know fear, and never know neglect. They are not underfed for sure. They are chunky!
I like the last video too – it has everything! Binkies, lettuce munching, baby periscoping, and baby sliding on wood floors
Its so fun to watch!
Your babies are adorable!
They look like bran muffins with ears.
Oh man! Let’s hope Bill’s breakout was before the babies were born! rabbitpam – bran muffins?! lol
The babies are now name Bolt and Lily. Boy and Girl. I could almost guess by their personalities prior to sexing them that they were boy and girl because they were so different and identical to their parents.
I’m cracking up listening to mom munch down on her veggies.
The babies are so cute – they look like chinchillas to me.
Something we do at the shelter to tell them apart (Besides cage tags) is I’d heard that people can write their info in their pet’s ears in permanent marker in case of natural disaster(like if you have to evacuate and leave them) so when we sexed babies that were ALL identical we took permanent marker and put a F for female and M for male in their right ears. You could probably do something similar to tell them apart if you wanted!
Have to say it-soooooo cute!!!!

Oh my gosh!!! What great binky pictures!!
SteveandPepper-
This is off topic of the cute little babies- but can you email me at KatnipCrzy@BinkyBunny.com and tell me which vet in Grand Rapids that you take your personal bunnies to? I had to rush one of mine to Grand Rapids this morning- and the clinic I called almost was not able to get her in- they caved when they could tell how upset I was. I have heard mostly good things about this clinic- but there was a member that reported an issue with them- and I believe there are 2 sides to every story. I would love any input about recommended vets in case I am ever in the situation again that one of my bunnies is so critically ill and I need to take them for treatment to GR. If you could email me that would be great- as I am hesitant to post about the clinic that the member complained about, and the other clinic I know about that treats bunnies- I met the doctor years ago and he rubbed me the wrong way. Thanks.
*sigh*
Video + pics, we are spoilt!
Nippett the Ewok from Star Wars and Lily. Striking resemblence. “Jub jub!”

OMG! I’m a goner now, *falls off chair from cuteness overload and crawls under desk*
Oh wow – I just realised their colouring is like Rumball’s (my lop) so now I can get an idea of what he looked like as a kit.
very happy!
