I think I’m in the doghouse.

Last night before bed I refilled Quincy’s water and hay trough.  The trough had been empty for a little bit, but I do that sometimes to make him eat the perfectly clean hay he’s littered on the floor.  So, nothing was different.

I stuff the trough full of the yummy Oxbow hay I’d managed to get, but instead glomping on it like he usually does he sat on his phone book and stiffened up.  He had that look like you see on startled wild rabbits.  I even looked around to see if someone had managed to sneak into my little studio, but couldn’t find anything unusal to disturb him.

I prodded him to get a resonse but he just sat there.  Finally he hopped up on the the middle shelf with his back to me.  I poked again (usually this either doesn’t bother him, or he’ll move), and he spun around, grunted, and stamped at me!  I haven’t heard him grunt since when I first brought him home from the shelter.  He stamped a few more time why I just sat there, baffled.  He was giving me the angry ears, too.  I tried pretending to groom myself but his face didn’t change.  I moved away for a few minutes and when I came back he let me open the door and pet him.  I thought maybe we were okay but I’m pretty sure I saw angry ears again when I got up this morning.

I couldn’t judge his mood when I left.  He seemed to be friendly again, but who knows?  I have NO idea what I did.  Is it unsual for rabbits to get mad for no discernable reason?  I feel so bad about it…

I’ve noticed that my rabbit will turn his back to me when he feels slighted in some way. I don’t always know what I’ve done. He will get over it shortly and usually come to me for some make-up rubs. He could be angry that is food tray was empty. Or he could be angry that you were in his space. Does he ever thump when you put your hand in his pen?

Nope, never thumps.  In fact, that’s the only time that he will always accept an offer for head rubs.  Outside the cage I have to wait till he decides it’s time.

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who gets a mysterious cold shoulder.

It could be anything-you watched a loud movie, the phone rang and bothered him. They also hear more then we do ; for instance we can only hear up to 23,000Hz whereas rabbits can hear up to 42,000hz so it’s likely he could hear something you can’t and it was bothering him.

Okay.  I hope it was just something random like that.  He seems okay today.

It’s just weird because he’s usually so easy-going.
