So I’m researching vets in Calgary (anyone know any good ones, send me details!!) as I have someone who has three rabbits booked in for spays this year (one already done) and that’s fine-then finds a male rabbit and can’t work it in the budget. So I told her I’d shop around for a GOOD vet and check our prices for her. This benefits us since we are the only rescue in Alberta and bound to get this question (vet in my area?) more then once. Sooo I send out my generic, I know nothing about rabbits, and here are my questions to see what their policies and procedures are….

So far two clinics have responded. Both fast the rabbits (given the detailed response, “for rabbits we generally ask that they do not eat from the morning on-I don’t think this is a clerical error) and Neither give pain medication (ohhh and if you want it-that’s thirty bux!! Grossly overpriced).

[This I *just* don’t get….why would you think any animal can have his/her private parts removed and not need a little drugs?]

Seriously hope I get some better clinics responding! Oh yes, both of those were EXOTIC vets too!

Thats retarded, i hate how peaple do that, they defnetly would give a person pain meds even for a less serious operation! Bunnies should get it to!

sorry I dont know any vets in Calgary.. havent been there in years >.<

Frustrating! When I shopped around for a vet to neuter my rabbit, every vet I phoned except for one priced their rabbit neuter/spay surgery according to weight like for dogs! But for cats, they ususally have a category of their own — why not make pricing for rabbits separately?

thats disappointing. i wonder how open they would be to reading info that contradicts their current policies?

It is SO hard to find a good vet! Right now, I’m frustrated with bunny vets. I need to find the perfect one. I have four vets I can take my bunnies to (well, five, but I don’t know the fifth one yet). One is really experienced with bunnies but he has ZERO people skills. I took Velvet there when she stopped eating a few months ago and they wanted me to leave her there overnight. I vehemently refused and told them I needed my girl home and that’s when he said, “It’s only $120 per night.” After spending over $300, who the heck cares how much it costs?! Noone was going to be there with her overnight, I just didn’t see the point in leaving her there.
The other vet is a top surgeon but I really don’t like his staff.
The third wants money – but a lot of people take their exotic pets there.
The fourth is really nice but not as experienced as vet no.1

As far as pain medicine goes, I was told that they don’t give medicine so they actually don’t over stretch and play too much while their incision is ‘fresh’. Doesn’t sound right, I know. Pain medicine can make them drowsy, which is a good thing.

                    GOOD LUCK!
