well this past weekend i went to the flea market near me and while browsing through it and passing some less then substandard animal booths i spotted him….my new mystery grey bun. well i had just spotted him out of the corner of my eye because he was behind some tanks of reptiles i got about 2 ft from the stand ready to get a better look at him when i heard the words “snake food” thats when i realized they were bartering over the rabbit. the store person says that some girl brought the bun to him in tears heart broken that she couldnt keep him anymore. he was about to sell him for $2 as snake food when i told the guy i would take him right that moment for whatever he wanted well the store guy seeing the opportunity to get more money out of the bun sold him to me for $30 and he gave me all the stuff the girl left with the bun. he is so beautiful!!!! hes a grey dutch. a lil overweight but he is very healthy otherwise.i may keep him because i have a soft spot for dutch bunnies…… i dont know why i felt compelled to take him but i did and i dont regret it at all and i probly never will.
good for you for saving him. He’s very lucky you came along when you did.
That awosme you saved him, it makes me so mad how peaple feed bunnys to snakes, its horrable! Do you have pictures yet? Ive never see a grey dutch before, he sounds cute!
Thats so mean. That bunny was a pet to begin with not snake food. He should remain a pet. Glad you found him. Poor bunny. If that girl had ever found out that it had gone for snake food that would have been horrible. How can a person do that to someone’s pet.
Lucky bunny.
I’m glad you saved him! It does perturb me that the man took advantage of you though…why $2 for snake food and $30 for a pet – weird. I love Dutches too – they are very smart rabbits. I have a gray dutch named Mango – he’s my avatar picture.
the money didint matter at the time though i would have paid $100. but in my experience rabbits were sold both ways if you asked for snake food they would be cheaper if you asked for a pet they were very expensive…..usually nothing about the rabbit mattered except what you wanted it for even if it were a lyonhead or angora a lop or a rex…..then the price would change to whatever suit the situation……which to me is very disturbing i never liked that that happened most of the time there are specifics on rabbits for such things but when it comes to pet stores making money anything brought in is potential for anyhting else….i know this because i have worked with many pet stores both reptile and otherwise not so much and have learned alot between them and how they work especially animal wise……and i find it disgusting. alot of the time unless the pet store deals with both reptiles and small animals the specifics on food is “controlled” but if a store deals in both thats when things get bad…..many animals that do not sell “fast” that would have otherwise been a pet would become snake food in the dealings of the store whether they were out of real snake food or not. but anyway the new grey bun is a sweetheart deffinately a spoiled one lol. i will have pics up soon most likely later tonight. his color is very cool he is a blue grey color with these odd tan markings where on my bun~bun there would be a dark grey. he is so nice towards other rabbits too but i htink he hasnt seen too many others. so that makes 3 dutchies for me yay!!!
So cool that you saved him!
I’m sure you get comments all the time to the irony of a Reptile Breeder who loves her pet bunny’s – I get similar comments since I am a chef.
BTW – what is “real” reptile food? I have never had a pet reptile and don’t know.
well the recomended food for reptiles is rats but it may vary…..some reptiles are too small to eat even a baby or just refuse rats so they eat mice… but a technique that most reptile people shoudl know is scenting [taking the scent of one animal and putting it on the food item you want them to eat] for instance ball pythons in the wild would eat animals similar to gerbils so i keep pet gerbils so i can scent rats for those stubborn eaters. some reptiles however grow to be very VERY large and require larger prey some recomend rabbits for the size but other easier prey items are available that have less potential to hurt the reptile like pigs of almost any size (dead/frozen MOST of the time) because they are easier to be eaten by larger reptiles but often enough they settle for rabbits as they are cheaper and easier to find…… but some reptiles are very exotic and with that they require a meal that is just so, sometimes chickens are involved but i dont see that as necessary with the talons and beak could become a problem in digestion. from what i have learned is that rats are one of the best forms of nurtients for reptiles which is why they are so recommended, also adding vitamins, minerals, and calcium (dusting) is very improtant when feeding anyway so whatever they eat should have what they need on it anyway. i have heard many tales of food substitutes becoming a habit……i was once told from a boy about 18 that his vary large reticulated python escaped from its cage and ate the family cat he told me that the snake would never eat another animal UNLESS it was a cat so he supposedly caught “stray” cats and fed them to his snake. i have also heard that if a reptile is sick and cannot eat to slip a goldfish down its throat for emergency nutrients. well it is alot harder for people like that to exist in the reptile world now because of the new laws and liscences you have to have for certain breeds of snakes. the knowledge of feeding reptiles is so extensive now that unless you keep yourself ignorant to it as a reptile keeper or stupidly listen to a pet store as new people often do thinking that the petstore would know. there are many techniques to feeding reptiles and i could go on and on about it but i wont for everyones sake lol.
well i managed to grab a couple a of quick pics before i got yelled out of the room for waking the sleeping bear of a fiancee lol. they ar enot very good but you get the jist.

Grey Dutches – My favorite! Love him!
He’s beautiful.
What kind of heatless person would accept a pet from a crying girl and sell him for snake food?? Do you have this persons picture and current address (readies the team…) GRRRRR
Good on you to save him, he’s beautiful!
I have a question-is it common for flea markets to sell pets in your area? That seems weird
unfortunatly yes it is very common, every flea market around me has at least 5 booths of animals some just birds, reptiles, small animals, some are mixed up…..i have only ever seen one stall that wasnt in filfth but the animals werent healthy regaurdless. its not too common i would see rabbits there but other then grey bun i did see a cage of baby albino rabbits for sale that day i didnt get to go through the whole thing though because i found bun early in the trip so we cut it short (did pass like 3 stalls tho). i dont usually go to the flea market i stoppped after i saved another like grey bun about 5 years ago named chocolate (she was a chocolate dutch) and i only had her about a month when she died, she was about baby buns age. i should have taken her to the vet when i got her but i didnt and some infection or whatever killed her….. but that is in the past grey bun has a vet appointment next monday to check him out.
Hope shes ok!
she is actually a he.
well pictire time is here!!!!!!

Aw wow, I would have snatched him up straight away as well. Good on ya for saving him! He’s adorable
i know and he is such a sweet heart too….lol and so spoiled.
He’s a very cute! Thank you for saving from him from those awful people.
Cute! There such a thing as dwarf dutches isn’t there? I like the name Blu – even though that not officially his name. I noticed in your siggy you still haven’t decided on a name for the baby either….that was a dutch too wasn’t it?
i know i have a hard time with names because i have to find a name that truly suits their personality. i know my current names dont seem like they would but i wouldnt have named them that if it didnt fit in some way (lol even food). yes there is such thing as the dwarf/dutch cross i used to have one (china) and i have known a few that other people had as well. they have a funny look to them lol…… i will post a picture of china so you can see what she looked like.
Oh, I’ve seen N dwarf x dutch, was thinking dwarf dutch as is small or mini. Guess it has to be crossed with a dwarf breed to get like that though – lol. Wonder what the little girl called the blue dutch? I like idea of name to fit personality. However, with mine her “personality” is forever revealing itself so I would never have settled on a name! Be good to hear what you come up with for both of them.
the shop owners wife was there and told more about the bun (the guy didint care he just wanted the money) but she told me that the girl called him Mr. bun bun and that he is two years old, likes his blanket, and to use special towles when giving him a bath (she gave me a box full of stuff that the girl gave them) food, toys, hay, towels, cage. she told me that they had only gotten the bunny like the day before and they gave me the stuff with him because the didnt want to keep or sell any of it just wanted him adn his stuff GONE.
Oh that is heartbreaking! I just don’t understand the minds of people, things are so transitory for some of them. So little worth is placed on these precious creatures, and perhaps the times we are in currently reflect the punishment we have foisted upon ourselves as a generation with behavior like this that goes unchecked.
Well I am certainly glad you were there to give this darling bun a rescue! What beautiful bright eyes and expression he has! 0_o I know I would have had a hard time walking away from a situation like that, even if it were only to foster the bun to a better home.
He’s precious beyond belief! Good luck to you and your new bunny! I think you two were brought together for a special reason!
[update] baby bun is a ………GIRL!!!!!! so let the flood of names flow free for blu bun and baby bun so that they can be named properly!!!!!
She’s lovely! How about Misty?
Congrats on your new beautiful girl! She looks sooo much like my Lily girl! Hmm, I am not good at coming up with good pet names- I would go on the baby name websites and wait until one REALLY jumps out at you. She is adorable!!!!! What a great rescue story!
